CONCEPT: FRAMING The design parti of the NYU School of Photography and Graphic Art is about framing. In photography and graphic design, framing often emphasizes something intriguing in a composition and makes it a focal point. Structurally, framing happens in moments where vertical and horizontal elements meet. This architectural design integrates both ideas of framing --visual and structural--as a means of organizing the public spaces of the building through structural and visual elements. The frames serve as thresholds, public/private designation, and framing perspectives for special moments within the design. The materiality of the design stays true to a traditional NoHo loft in its muted pallette, with emphasis on lighting and textures in materials. Bright colors are introduced only in the main structural frames, with a different color per floor to provide a unique sense of feeling.
