I’m Free

Don’t grieve for me, for now I ‘m free.

I’m following the path God laid, you see.

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another these words.

Obituary Mavis Clorretta Mike Wyre was born in Antigua, West Indies to the late Cornelius and Amelia Mike on _________. They experienced tremendous joy and gladness at the birth of their beautiful baby girl, and. their home was made richer by Mavis’ quiet spirit. Her siblings delighted in her and treasured her.

Her parents, who were strong advocates for Christian Education, greatly influenced Mavis’ formative years. As a result, she received a strong educational and spiritual foundation when she began her formal education at the Seventh-day Adventist elementary school in Antigua.

After graduating from Ms. Stevens Secondary School, Mavis began her college education at the Holberton Hospital School of Nursing. Upon completion, she received a Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery.

In 1965, Mavis immigrated to the United States to join her siblings and to advance her career in nursing. She completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and practiced her profession for forty plus years. During her time in New York, she was an active member of the City Tabernacle of Seventh -Day Adventist Church. For most of her life her melodious singing was an asset to the congregation. She served faithfully as a the member of the choir and the Ladies Chorale.

Her marriage to Glentis Wyre was proof that she had found her soul mate. He loved and treasured her dearly. The union produced three children: René, Glentis Jr., and Dwayne. Mavis was a consummate mother, wife and homemaker. She was the heartbeat of her family.

As she had accepted the Third Angel’s Message at an early age, Mavis had a life-long yen for spiritual growth and service. It was not uncommon for her to question her spiritual leaders until the point in question was clarified. She would often remark, “I have to understand clearly so that I can share the information with my friends.”

She faithfully used her talents to minister to the hearts of many. She was higly proficient in American Sign Language and utilized her skills to serve the congregation. Mavis was a woman of prayer and prayed constantly especially for her husband and children.

Upon retirement from North Central Hospital in New York, Mavis relocated to Columbia, South Carolina to lead a quieter life and to spend time with her grandchildren. However those desires were short lived.

Shortly after her transition to Columbia, Mavis became a founding member of New Covenant Tabernacle of Seventh-day Adventists. Her unwavering faith motivated her to accept the challenges of assisting in planting a church. Her passion for sharing the Blessed Hope with others was evidenced in her faithful visits to patients in nursing homes, and her constant effort in proffering invitations to church as well as literature and tracts, and her willingness to speak plainly about the love of God. Though unassuming, Mavis was a phenomenal woman of incredible strength and fortitude, possessing a consistent, contagious smile, a ready wit, and an entertaining sense of humor. She was beautiful in a manner that transcends the physical, because of the gift of joy and laughter that so obviously welled within her.

On Sabbath, July 13, 2013, Mavis fell asleep in Jesus. Now too soon, she is gone. We cannot now comprehend this void. With God’s help, we will move on. Our lives will be emptier for her absence, because they were made fuller by her presence. So we honor her memory, a memory that will be indelibly inscribed in our hearts and minds. We resolve, here and now, to cherish that memory and utilize it as a guide to spread principles of honor, morality and Christian virtues that were Mavis’ guide.

Mother, you will be greatly missed. We will find comfort in the love, wisdom, strength and support you have always given us. You will be always live in our hearts. We will miss your laughter, smile, humor, beauty and grace. You have raised your children well and we will honor your memory. We will see you again in heaven when Jesus comes again.
