India Who I live with:

Food Likes

I live with my mother and father, my brother Shabeer, my grandparents and my aunt and uncle and 3 cousins. ...................................................................

What my parents/carers work at: My father is a farmer who grows crops and he also has goats. ...................................................................

Type of home: My home is a mud hut. It is made of plastered walls with mud-cow-dung. ...................................................................

My dream: Our school doesn’t have any computer lessons. I’ve never seen a computer, but I’ll take private computer lessons when I am older. I know, these days everything is done on a computer and I really dream of having a great job when I’m older. ...................................................................

Likes/Things enjoy doing: In school I like to do printing with a vegetable called okra. I decorate my painting with dried lentils. At home I draw tracks for my marbles in the dry, sandy earth. I love to play marbles. Among the games we would play is hide-and-seek, kite flying, and Indian cricket (gulli-danda), a stick-game played by boys. ...................................................................

Dislikes/Fears: The temperature here can get really HOT! The summers can get up to 49oC (around 118°F). That is HOT! Also we only get 4 inches of rain some years! That is not enough for farmers (including my father) to grow crops. There are many dams built to save up the water.

Here’s a list of my favourite food: Samosas: Mashed potatoes, onions and peas are wrapped in dough and fried. • Naan: Think of this flatbread as Indian pita bread. • Tandoori chicken: Chicken is marinated in yogurt and spices, • Chicken curry: Curry is spicy, but it doesn’t have to be hot. Introduce kids to a very mild curry. • Lassi: A yogurt and fruit drink, like a smoothie. • Kheer: A rice pudding made with coconut milk, raisins and nuts. ...................................................................

Food Dislikes: Here are some of the foods I don’t like: •

Lentil soup: This mild, pureed soup is full of hidden vegetables • Dal makhani: Lentils cooked with onions, tomatoes and cream are soft and mild enough for little ones. • Vegetable biryani: Rice is spruced up with nuts, dried berries and vegetables Can you see that I don’t like vegetables!! ...................................................................

Things I am good at: I help my father with building work around the house – I am good at fixing things. ...................................................................

Things I find hard to do: My father has tried to show me how to play the sitar – but it is too big and my music sounds really bad.
