Chapter IV

T

hat was 18 months ago and the relationship with Sherelle had come and gone.

We’d spent time together everyday. Yet, even with seeing her daily I didn’t know she was living a double life on me. After a month of dating we had sat down and decided to date exclusively. Ray told me once again to go slow but from the start this Shorty knew how to get to me. To me she was the ideal woman. She was intelligent, cool to hang out with and sexy as hell. And I know that I really should’ve paid more attention to the obvious little warning signs that flew up at times, like why was it that she always stayed over my crib and I never stepped foot into her place? Or the only way to reach her was by her pager? I never questioned it and we were involved for nearly six months when one night when Sherelle was suppose to visiting her aunt in Chicago, Ray talked me into going to the club to celebrate winning a close game we had earlier that day against Georgetown U’s team. We had agreed to meet her cousin who worked at a straight club downtown before rolling out to “Maverick’s” on the lower side of town to meet up with some friends from campus. As we entered ‘The Hornet’s Nest’ a straight nightclub, the place was packed jumping with people. It had to be at least three women for every guy. Ray was strolling ahead towards the bar in front of me to try to catch her cousin working behind the bar when she stopped dead in her tracks. I walked up behind her dodging gyrating bodies on the dance floor and followed her glaze to the bar to find my eyes landing on what I had thought to be “my” girlfriend’s arms around some dude who had his hand creeping up her very short, revealing skirt. Things in my head wouldn’t work, yet they comprehended what I was seeing in their own way.

“—Terry…” Ray’s arms shot to mine trying to push me back into the crowd of dancers. “Teren, look let’s roll. Let the bitch go for now,” Ray pleaded looking me in my eyes. Though I was the rational one of the two, Ray had told me many times that my temper was frightening at times especially when I got a certain look in my eyes. “Look Ray, I am not going to just leave. Nor will I embarrass myself over her. Let me go.” I looked Ray in the eyes. “Move Ray,” I pushed Ray aside and walked up to Sherelle and the guy at the bar. “Glad to see your aunt is feeling better Sherelle must’ve been that 24 hour bug that’s been going around.” I heard my voice speak oddly. She hadn’t seen me approach her but my voice caused her to look up from where she was sitting at the bar with her hand stroking the guy’s dick thru his slacks. “Teren…?” Her hand pulled away from his lap and she quickly tried to move away from him. “I―” her voice faltered and I turn and begin to walk back the way I had entered, stunned. Devastated. Finding my lover posted up with some guy was the last thing I would believe I would’ve seen. I heard her calling out my name. Why? What could she possibly say to me at that moment in time? “Oh god Teren, please wait!” She grabbed my arm and I spun around facing her. “Let me explain…” I shook her hands off my arm. “What? What can you possibly explain to me Sherelle?” The guy came up behind Sherelle grabbing her arm just as she reached out towards me.

“Sherelle, come on I’m ready to go home,” he squeezed her on the ass. “You know the agreement, when it’s my time it’s my time. Your dyke escapades ain’t supposed to interfere with me and you. She’ll be alright, I’m ready to roll.” I pushed pass Ray towards the club’s entrance not believing what I’d just witness as well as just heard. ‘Her dyke escapades?’ Oh that’s all I was about? I pushed pass the bouncer and the crowd of people still waiting in line to get in the club and made my way to my truck. I hadn’t seen Ray behind me but when I got to the truck’s door Ray was running to the passenger side. We drove away from the club in silence neither of us speaking. I didn’t want to talk. What was there to say? I just had been treated like a small vacation town where people came to take vacations on my heart, on my feelings. They just come to enjoy their self but when it’s all said and done they leave and the town is once again hollowed out. No one has a right to take a vacation on my heart. That was eighteen months ago, Ray had been there through the bullshit that followed after the night when I walked from the club, away from Sherelle. I’d found out through the grapevine that she had started seeing the guy three months after we began dating. She had called my apartment that night getting only the answering machine. I’d sit there and listen to her bullshit excuses on my machine. But no excuse in the world could she offer me because the fact remained she cheated on me and left me out there looking the fool. I wasn’t up for anything, deciding to take a few days off from school. I would return in four days for our next game on Friday. Ray had driven over to the coach’s place to explain that I had a ‘family’ emergency and wouldn’t make practice that week but I

would be at the game. If she wanted me to start that day or not I understood. But I would be there Friday. My instructors were cool about me missing that week giving me extensions if I need it for class assignments. I began packing a few things to make the trip home to see my parents. I wasn’t quite sure if I was heart-broken or not, I did know I was hurt by Sherelle’s actions of betrayal of our relationship. Ray walked into the room. “You sure you want to drive your motorcycle all the way to Atlanta Teren? Why don’t you just drive the truck home?’ she sat on the bed beside my backpack I was loading with personal items for my trip. I shook my head, “I’ll be fine, and it’s only a 5 hour drive.” “Look I think you should know something before you leave instead of you coming back to school and finding out,’ Ray began as she folded up a pair of jeans for me. “And what’s that?” That guy you saw Sherelle with wasn’t the only man she was with while you were together. Nia told me she was with Chelle and Dre,” both of them were from our basketball team. “Fuck, who the hell didn’t that bitch fuck?’ I snapped tossing a pair of jeans in the bag. “Well, she tried me once but I turned her ass away,’ Ray replied grabbing another pair of pants to fold. I stopped and looked at her. “You know you can’t run away from this no matter how embarrassing and painful it is Terry. It’s going to still be here when you get back Friday.” She held the pants in her hands. “Maybe I should have told you

what she tried with me and all the rumors about her that was circling around about her but what would that have done?” I sat down on the bed beside her. She was right. It was still going to be here when I got back and even if I did hear the rumors would I have listened to anyone; to her even? “You still have a life to lead buddy,” Ray took my hand and gave it a squeeze. “There are plenty of honeys running around so trust and believe that sometime soon things will look brighter.” “I’ll see you Friday at the game Ray,” I push my things into my bag and got up to leave.
