Learn English

Learn English with learndirect Learning or improving your English is a great way to build your confidence and help you get more from everyday life. Whether your goal is to communicate with other people, help your children with their homework or improve your job prospects, learndirect can help. Courses may also be FREE, depending on your circumstances.


What’s it like to learn with learndirect Learning is flexible, you can learn at a learndirect centre or at home. Our courses are designed to suit different abilities and you can learn as much or as little as you want at a pace that suits you. learndirect learning is not restricted to term timetables and you do not have to wait long before you start your learning. The learning is done on the computer and you may find that your centre has flexible opening hours to accommodate your learning. There is always help and support available, so if you haven’t used a computer before don’t worry as friendly staff are there to help.

(English Language Learning Instruction System)

If English isn’t your first language this course will help you to feel more comfortable when you’re speaking or listening to English. You don’t have to worry about understanding the course; we offer extra help in these languages: Arabic, Burmese, Cantonese, Castilian, Czech, Euro Portuguese, Farsi, French, Greek, Gujarati, Hindi, Italian, Kurdish, Mandarin Chinese, Punjabi, Serbian, Somali, Spanish, Sylheti, Tamil, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese. You’ll also learn about life in Britain and British culture. By completing this course you’ll be working towards a nationally recognised qualification, our Certificate in ESOL Skills for Life. This will show employers that your communication skills are of a high standard which could help you to get a job or get on at work.

This course will allow you to: • Follow and take part in discussions • Use formal English • Ask and respond to more complex questions • Express yourself clearly using spoken and written English • Understand different styles of written English • Understand specialist key words • Use punctuation confidently

Everyday English By completing any of these courses you’ll be working towards the Certificate in Adult Literacy. This is similar to a GCSE, and will show employers that you have the English skills they’re looking for. It’ll really boost your CV, and could help you get ahead at work. Vocabulary, Spelling and Grammar learn how to: • Spell the days of the week and numbers from one to ten • Recognise sounds made by letters • Find ways to spell to spell unfamiliar words • Use verbs and pronouns correctly • Make your writing easy to read by using different types of punctuation correctly



learn how to: • Recognise the letters of the alphabet • Understand short texts • Understand signs • Follow simple instructions • Identify why a text was written and what it wants you to do • Fill out forms to do with work, money and your personal life • Use different reading methods like skimming, scanning and detailed reading

learn how to: • Know when to use full stops and capital letters • Plan the kind of language you want to use • Write notes, lists, texts and e-mails • Avoid common writing mistakes • Organise your writing

Your place your community This personal development course will allow you to integrate into the community to which you live and understand customs and values. It will allow you to understand your own behaviour, customs and attitudes and allow you to appreciate the importance of communication skills.

WorkWise Are you unemployed or looking for a change of career? Perhaps you’re unsure of what kind of jobs you’d like to apply for, what those jobs might involve, and how much you could earn. If so, WorkWise is the course for you. This course if perfect for you if you’re struggling to: • Explore and learn about different areas of work • Try and decide which jobs might be suitable for you • Understand what skills you might need for a particular job • Understand the routes of progression and promotion in different careers.
