OUTREACH AND FUNDRAISING HUB Atelier: Intimate Cities

The Wood Street Mission was established in 1869 as a charity to provide food and clothing to the families living in the worst slums of Victorian Manchester. Over 145 years later, the Mission still operates from the same Wood Street building, providing goods and services to Salford and Manchester families living in today’s austerity-driven poverty.

This thesis proposal is an extension to the Wood Street Mission, creating an Outreach and Fundraising Hub. Based on the concepts of historic reprogramming, as well as access and visibility in the city, the extension aims to expand on the existing programmes offered by the Mission, as well as incorporate new ones. The Mission’s physical and social network associated with the adjacent Spinningfields Business District are strengthened by incorporating a fund raising space in the extension. In addition, the hub incorporates skills facilities such as kitchens and a library, to expand the help available to families visiting the Mission.

ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGY

N - S ORIENTATION AND STACK VENTILATION

The split level design, with a central atrium space (with a south facade on Wood Street), means natural stack ventilation is possible, and avoid the need for energy-intensive mechanical ventilation. The only mechanically ventilated spaces are the kitchens and WCs on the second floor, where suspended ceilings hide the ductwork.

The natural ventilation is made possible due to the operable window panels in each opening, and the operable roof lights at the top of the atrium. The acoustic louvres on each operable window mean the noise from Bridge and Wood Street does not impact the internal spaces when ventilation is flowing. Heating is powered by a ground source heat pump, and is distributed in under floor heating on all floors. Solar shading is provided on the south side by the perforated brick facade and deep-set windows.
