KBD Philosophies & Background For more than 12 years, KBD has been utilizing insightful problem-solving to produce creative, memorable, and effective communications for our clients. KBD is a small strategic agency with big project experience that combines a passion for creative communication with intelligent business acumen. We pride ourselves on making your goals our own, with smart, cost-effective solutions that speak specifically to your business.

Philosophy At KBD, we make it all about you. After all, it’s YOUR company and it’s likely if you are the one making decisions about which design firm to use, you are also the one who will be using the brand elements regularly. Our job is to make yours easier…we give you an arsenal of tools so that when we are done, you are in the driver’s seat.

For example: » All of our website designs are developed with either Wordpress or Drupal content management systems that will allow you or someone on your team to easily make updates to the site. » Full identity development includes the creation of a graphics library, with photo images, illustrations, and icons that all fit within the brand, in addition to flexible brand guidelines that work the way your company does. » Case studies, whitepapers, and other marketing materials are templated to make it easy to replicate them as new business and products are developed.

We not only create beautiful and effective design solutions for our clients, we do it in a way that’s fun, enjoyable, and a great experience for everyone involved. In short, we’re just nice and we really like what we do.

Studio The KBD studio is located at 1000 Cherokee Road in Louisville, Kentucky, in the historic Carnegie Library Building. We have three full time designers and a developer on staff and many very talented freelancers who work part time for us from the bay area.

Typical Projects for Startups KBD Services Below is a list of services that we typically perform for our startup clients. The prices for these services vary depending upon the complexity and time required for each project. Next to each project below is an average number of hours spent for a typical small company. Our rate is $150/hour for most projects.

Note that every project at KBD is custom, so please request a specific estimate from us to determine the budget for your individual situation.

Logo and brand development, with guidelines (30-40) At KBD, our first love has always been logos. Successful logos are more than just pretty marks, they are a strategic, well-planned visual representation of your company and its core messages. Our process for logo development ensures that the final result is not only a beautiful, usable mark, but one that is very specific to your company vision. Once the logo has been developed, we also build out other key elements of the brand, including color palette, corporate typefaces, and an image and illustration library.

We bring all of these items together in a well-written and flexible identity guideline document to ensure a consistent use of all the brand elements across multiple platforms.

Stationery design (10-15) Your business card is often the first thing potential customers and investors will see, and first impressions count. At KBD, corporate stationery is not an afterthought. We make sure your business cards and any other materials you use for corporate communications are high quality, beautifully printed, and an accurate representation of your voice in the marketplace. Once your cards and stationery have been designed, we make ongoing orders easy, with a simple order form on the KBD website your employees can use to order their own business cards.

KBD Corporate website (35-275) Websites are typically the core marketing vehicle for any startup company. At KBD, we follow the strict rule that structured, well planned content is the key driver for design....not vice-versa. In that vein, KBD utilizes a software called Jumpchart, a collaborative whiteboard that allows everyone on both our team and yours to easily plan the information structure and content of your website before we even get started on the look and feel. This easy-to-use program ensures that we build you a site that drives business to your company with great SEO, user friendly navigation, and content that speaks to your key audiences. Of course, being a design company, we take that core content and make it look terrific. The end result is not only a good looking website, but one that will truly make a difference for your bottom line and can evolve as your company grows.

Powerpoint or Keynote Templates (20-30) Your investor or sales deck should be a key element of your company’s brand. Like the website, presentation decks are content driven. However, unlike the website, your slide deck should not be content-heavy.

KBD will work with you to create a balance between visually compelling images and great content to create a deck that inspires action.

HTML Newsletters

(5-10)

More than ever, HTML newsletters are an easy way to stay in touch with your client or partner base while reinforcing your brand and messaging. We can create templates for you in our own, user-friendly interface, complete with robust reporting features to help you learn more about your key audiences.

Customized Facebook & Twitter Pages

(20-30)

For many startups, not effectively using social media outlets is a missed branding opportunity. KBD can build specialized pages that look and feel like your company to make even a minimal investment of time and money in social media a worthwhile one. Using iFrames for Facebook, we can even replicate all or part of your website within your Facebook page.

Datasheets, Case Studies, Whitepapers

Sales documents, whether in the form of product datasheets, case studies, or whitepapers, are go-to tools for detailing important information about individual products and services, and are excellent vehicles for any startup brand. KBD is well versed in creating each of these documents, from crafting and refining the story, to adding compelling visuals, to printing and online distribution.

KBD Tradeshow and conference collateral and planning

Attending or sponsoring tradeshows and conferences can be a key element (albeit a very expensive one) in any startup’s marketing budget. KBD can help maximize your investment at these shows, with beautiful and provocative booth designs, giveaways, leave-behinds, presentation loops, and strategic plans to help get the most leads for your budget.

Event planning

A proven alternative to sponsoring costly conferences is hosting your own event; whether it be a compelling panel discussion or hosting a happy hour at a local establishment. KBD can help you plan and execute, from creating the theme, site selection, A/V, and catering to invitations and social media to fill the room.

Advertising campaigns (20-30) Ad agencies can be out of reach for many startup budgets. Thankfully, KBD is experienced in creating fully baked ad campaigns for our clients for a fraction of the cost you’d pay an agency. We’ll work with you to create a compelling, sellable concept and then carry it through to a number of vehicles...from print ads to web banners to billboards.

Printed Presentation Materials (10-15) You nailed the presentation. When you leave the room, are you leaving your viewers with a simple printout of your slides, or something that reinforces your brand and reiterates the story you just told them so that they can pass it along to their colleagues? Our clients often have us help create memorable, branded packages for post presentation sales materials, including pre-printed covers for slide printouts, specialized printed versions of the presentation deck without builds, and presentation folders to house sales sheets or whitepapers.

Product Demos and Videos Today’s technologies can sometimes be hard to explain to a potential customer or investor without an in-person demo or video. KBD partners with terrific video producers, allowing us to create viral or private videos evangelizing your product or service, helping your sales team close deals whether they are in the same room or across the country.

Blog & Social Media Planning Every CEO knows that he or she *should* be writing a blog. And every CEO swears that they’ll get to it...one of these days. Successful blogging and social media campaign implementation require more than just good intentions. KBD works with experts who will remove the headaches and time crunches to increase your measurable results in social media. For blogs, we’ll set up an agreed-upon editorial calendar for the year, then schedule a time to interview you for each. Much like a newspaper or magazine interview, your thoughts are transcribed and translated into a compelling article. However, unlike a magazine or newspaper, the draft is returned to you to edit and tweak before we post it to your blog. It’s your voice, your thoughts....but not a lot of your time.

While every website KBD builds is welloptimized for search engine spiders, as your website and company evolves, ongoing attention must be paid to keeping new content and pages searchable and findable by your key audiences. About Katie Katie Bush, founder and creative director, has been working in marketing communications and design for nearly 20 years. Before founding KBD in 2000, Katie held positions as Design Director for Michael Patrick Partners in Palo Alto, CA and Marketing Design Director for the Hi-Tech Group of CMP Media in San Francisco. She has also been a designer for Gumas Communications in San Francisco and Greer, Margolis, Mitchell and Burns in Washington, DC. She holds a BFA degree from Georgetown University, and is one of the founding members of the Georgetown Tech Alliance. She's a member and sponsor of the Louisville Graphic Design Association, the San Francisco AIGA and the founder and chairman of Friends of Bloom, Inc., a non-profit organization focused on children’s health and fitness initiatives. She also serves on the board of Navigate Enterprise Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping underserved populations start and grow small businesses.
