Brief:

After a discussion and product review with NDCS and my own research throughout the Part A I want to design a product with the purpose of making the day to day tasks of deaf children easier, most importantly communication. Other areas to think about and/ or include in my the design specification are discreetness in terms of aesthetics, signalling and/or alarms for both warnings and tasks, and finally stimulation of emotion and behaviour.

The Family Trea Set

Tea Cups and Tea Pots

Final Set Design

KB

Teacups Three different sizes representing three generations, the smallest representing the third generation and the largest representing the first. Teapot

The tea pot is the most important part of a tea set as its where the main aspect of the ritual takes place, the teapot for my narrative represents the place where everything takes place. The teapot also represents my nana, both in importance and aesthetically, the teapot will be created using traditional method of throwing. I will also add a glaze which will carry the patina of an elderly person.

Tray Stand

The tray stand represents both family, expressed through the family mug tree, and togetherness around the table; where upon the teapot sits, thus representing where the main element of my narrative occurs.

Spoons The spoons provide the extra touch to the concept, portraying how not everyone takes their tea the same, that they came in all different shapes and sizes, but it provides catering for all; much like families do.

Drinks Donkey

Brief: ‘Design and manufacture to a high quality prototype stage, a specific furniture typology - the portable free-standing storage form - as typified by the Penguin Donkey, suitable for current lifestyles. The design must be able to be produced using the technology of CNC routing, although you may choose to make your donkey prototype using gigs, where necessary, and hand-routing machines.’

Full Scale Mock Up:

The Drinks Donkey provides storage for alcohol bottles within 4 compartments, each with a capacity of holding 3 average sized wine bottles. The Donkey rotates on a ‘Lazy Susan’ to allow easy And simple access to the drinks compartments. As well as storing alcoholic beverages it can also store 4 wine glasses on 2 integrated glass racks, above the 2 racks there are small shelves suitable for storing other drink related products such as bottle openers and corkscrews.

RATIONALE AND INSPIRATIONS MENTHAM solves the common problems stumbled upon in studio apartment living: -

Clothes can be hung from it. Privacy is gained from it. Storage space is given. A place for memories is created.

MENTHAM was inspired by geometry and topology. The geometric’s being emphasized with the the rhombus shaped shelf, and the topology portrayed with how the fabric acts.

Winged Sofa Desk

Problem: There is a growing market trend in the area of home office, more people are tending to work from home in a variety of ways Having researched and found ten of the most problematic issues of working at home I decided to focus upon the lack of space and comfort.

Design Trends: Modifiable workspaces for different environments and working styles as well as possibilities for rest and relaxation. Natural feature and different surfaces, when finished to a high standard.

Space Saving: Rollout/ folding parts, wall features, working triangles - computer, printer, writing space.

Daniel Libeskind: A Polish- American architect; on a trip to Manchester I visited the Imperial War Museum North - one of his pieces. While I was there I learnt that he designed the building after sealing a teapot in a bag and dropping it from his fourth floor window of his studio in Berlin. He collected the pieces and used them for inspiration. The three shards represent a World fragmented by war. I was inspired by the way he designed this building, so I smashed plates and tiles to gather shapes and ideas for my piece.

The Angela Rocker

The Rocking Chair Problem: The rocking chair is an outdated piece of furniture, which stereotypically looks as it does in image (1). However this design lacks the ability to fit in with current design movements and therefore fails to fit in with the furniture of peoples homes. Newer designs of the rocking chair do exist (2)(3)(4)(5), though the shapes are very interesting and cause people to take a second glance at them, they seem to lack the beauty and elegance in which the rocking chair once had; the lack of detail in the designs almost makes them dull. For a rocking chair to be perfect it must have certain qualities: • Initial impact - when the consumer first sees the chair, it should leave them thinking about it for a while. • Long term viability, or staying-power. • The rocking chair must fit in with its setting and surroundings.

Need: The consumer wants a rocking chair in which is contemporary so that it fits into the style of their homes that also carries the elegance and beauty in which the earlier rocker had. Design Brief: I will design and make a contemporary rocking chair for adults which has the detail in which will carry the elegance and beauty that the earlier rocker had. It will include all needs of the client in terms of style and comfort. I will be making a working model of the rocker; industrially the rocking chair will be batch produced. The rocker will be used mainly for people who suffer with back pain, similar as to what the Kennedy rocker was used for.

KB

The design looks very clinical, maybe adding pattern will enable the design to carry the elegance required. I tested several ways to achieve this and later also changed the shape of the side panels to make it more round.

To achieve this elegance and beauty I engraved a pattern onto two acrylic sheets, the pattern being influenced by the clients Laura Ashley wall paper.

Katie’s Creations Katie’s Creations is a small illustration business i set up myself. After creating a caricature piece for a friends birthday, and her family and friends seeing this, I started receiving requests of my work for people to give as gifts, or for themselves. 2017 - Present

Faceless Faceless is a project I have been working on, taking the standard holiday photo album and creating a unique twist - although we know holidays are full of joy the lack of facial expression within the pieces causes you to think about the moment that photo was captured and what the emotions were at the time.
