A n i m a l Fa r m . When res p ond i n g to the s cript by Ge orge Orwel l, I chos e to explore the harrowing nature of the historical context of the text, cre ati ng a cold, ble ak world.

I c r e a t e d a s p a c e t h a t w a s a d a p t a b l e fo r t h e v a r i o u s l o c a t i o n s within the text, with the actors manipulating and constructing v a r i o u s s c e n i c e l e m e n t s . My o v e r a l l c o n c e p t w a s t o e v o k e a s e n s e o f d i s c o m fo r t fo r t h e a u d i e n c e . I d e v e l o p e d a s e a t i n g a r r a n g e m e n t t h a t wa s envi ron m enta l, a nd very much a p a rt o f the b a rnya rd surrounding them.

T h e c o s t u m e s we r e d e s i g n e d to u n i fy a l l o f t h e a n i m a l s a p a r t fr o m Na p o l e o n , t h e m o s t h u m a n i s t i c o f t h e m a l l . I w a n t e d t o d i s t o r t t h e hu m a n fi g u r e t h r o u gh p a dd i n g , a n d l e a t h e r b r a c e s wo r n o n t h e fa c e supp orti ng snouts and ears to repres ent each sp ecies of ani mal.

The concept was s et i n a b edou i n tent, that cou ld change and a d a p t w i t h t h e s c r i p t . We c r e a t e d a c a n v a s t h a t c o u l d b e m o v e d a n d cha n ge d fre ely by the ca st a s they s a i le d on a b oat, or d i s covere d a giant’s lai r.

The text describ es purgatory as a place of litigation, so the development of the set design b egan in courtrooms but grew into an a rchive th rou gh the s ens e o f a ge that i s su ggeste d i n the tex t.
