Advice for Comfort When Wearing Hearing Aids When you first get your hearing aids, they may feel uncomfortable to wear, both physically and in terms of the new sounds you’ll be exposed to. There are several things to do to increase your comfort when wearing hearing aids. Gradually Increase Use You shouldn’t go from lack of hearing aids to suddenly wearing them around the clock. Your hearing aid provider will probably recommend that you wear the hearing aids for just an hour or two each day at first. Gradually increase the time as you get used to them. In addition, start by wearing the hearing aids in relatively quiet environments with familiar sounds so you don’t overwhelm yourself. Ensure Correct Positioning If you incorrectly position the hearing aids in your ears, they may cause discomfort. However, if they’re in there correctly, you may notice them, but they shouldn’t cause pain or extreme discomfort. Therefore, pay attention when your provider shows you how to position them in your ears. If you do experience discomfort, make an appointment with your hearing aid provider to check the fitting.

Control Environments Even with hearing aids, you will still have to do your part to ensure maximum comfort when wearing them. One major factor to consider is what environments you are in. As much as possible, avoid environments with a lot of background noise, which can overwhelm you and feel uncomfortable. For example, when going to a restaurant, choose one that doesn’t play loud music and try to not get seated right next to the kitchen. As long as you follow the instructions your audiologist and hearing aid provider give, your hearing aids should be relatively comfortable for you. If you’re experiencing discomfort after your adjustment period, make a follow-up appointment.
