Brezoi is a small town in the Rumanian Loviste region, shaped by two very different systems for mananging of ‘Obstes’, with village commoners who have rights to the land and a strong history of self-subsistence farming and secondly, the now moribund but once large-scale communist timber factory, with its adjacent housing blocks and urban infrastructure.

‘Odai’ are small-scale mountain farms, built on common land and used to complement the food production of village families. Each family would have a simple one room house – ‘Odaia’– comprising a barn and an animal stall, along with land for growing vegetables, an orchard and grazing areas.

Membrii familiei folosesc odaia ĂŽn timpul verii. Majoritatea odailor sĂŽnt ĂŽn prezent abandonate. One family member - sometimes more - would live at the Odaia during the summer season. Most Odai are now abandoned.

Reconstructing traditions. A new Odaia is under construction, using traditional building methods but adapted for contemporary social and economic circumstances. The Odaia is larger and less private than its traditional counterparts. This Odaia will be used by groups rather than a family between the mountains and the villages.
