9th June 2011

Dear Parents/Guardians, Staff, Students and Friends of OLSH

What a marvellous gathering of the College community last Friday, 3rd June, the celebration of Founders’ Day! Thank you so much to the staff, parents and senior students who worked so well together in the overall organisation of the day’s activities. Right from the outset when the younger students walked with their teachers and parents to the Telegraph Station, and the seniors took part in a cross-country race, there was a great sense of fun, goodwill and enjoyment. The senior students were allocated groups of younger students to lead them in various activities, and they took to their task with great care and enthusiasm. Likewise, the whole school liturgy, the presentation of the Champagnat medals, and the entertainment, each added a special feature to this memorable get-together. Each year the Champagnat medals are made available by the Marist Brothers as a gesture of gratitude to those students who model the very qualities that were promoted by Saint Marcellin Champagnat, when he gathered his first teachers together, nearly two hundred years ago. In a quiet and dignified way, these students are honest, straightforward, genuine and friendly to others – staff and students alike. They do their good work without fuss and provide great stability in our community. Congratulations to all these students who received Certificates and Medals. Year Eleven: Jade Hatt*, Danielle DeBrenni, Samuel Crowe, Celine Ashley Ociones Year Twelve: Michael McGuirk*, Rhett Summers, Shane Garfath, Aaron Crowe, Jarrad Dickson. Last Tuesday, 7th June, we had several very distinguished guests visit our Little Children’s Learning Place (Cnr. Wills Terrace and Bath Street) at the Bath Street campus. The Prime Minister, Ms Julia Gillard, the Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Mrs Jenny Macklin, and the Mayor, Mr Damien Ryan, spent about forty five minutes with the children and they were also introduced to many of our staff. Ms Marni Milankov and Mrs Margaret Palmer, who coordinate the Learning Place, led the children in a number of songs to the amusement and pleasure of our visitors. A reminder that the Parents’ and Friends’ Association will hold its final meeting for the semester next Thursday, 17th June, at the Sadadeen campus library, commencing at 7.30pm. Preparations are underway for this year’s fete and you are encouraged to assist in the planning. Best wishes

Br Paul Gilchrist Principal

Campus News: Bath St I hope you enjoyed Founder’s Day last Friday, as much as the staff and students from Bath Street. The walk was invigorating ( so I am told!) and the children had a great time interacting with their older peers from Traeger and Sadadeen. I would like to commend the work of the group leaders from Sadadeen – they did a wonderful job and were responsible for making the day such a success. We are now experiencing some ―real‖ winter’s weather, just in time for the Finke Desert Race! It’s hard to believe that last week we were 26° C and now we are struggling to reach 14°C.

PRIME MINISTER’S VISIT On Tuesday the Little Children’s Learning Place were fortunate to have a brief visit from the Prime Minister, Ms Julia Gillard and the Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Ms Jenny Macklin. Along with a media throng, the visit lasted just over ½ hour. The children were delightful and many thanks to Miss Marni and Miss Margy for keeping everything in order during the visit. The Federal Government have announced funding for the Centre for 2011, and we are hoping for an announcement re ongoing funding later in the year.

EISTEDDFOD NEWS Wonderful news yesterday! The Bath Street Choir participated in two sections at the Eisteddfod yesterday and received first prize for both. They were entered in the Year 4 and Under Secular Choir section and the Year 6 and Under Sacred Choir section. Congratulations and well done to all, and a particular big ―Thank You‖ to Mrs Guzman for all her hard work and time in preparing the choir.

FINKE DESERT RACE Last Thursday we had Mr Damien Ryan, Mr Rick Hall and Mr Ryan Branford attend our assembly to speak about staying safe while watching the Finke Desert Race this weekend. The children were reminded to stay away from sweeping corners, stay off the track, bring their rubbish back to town and to be fire safe. The colouring competition will close this Friday and the prizes will be awarded next week.

CASUAL CLOTHES DAY Tomorrow we have a casual clothes day for the College. Children are invited to wear casual clothes and bring a gold coin donation.

PRIMARY INTERSCHOOL SPORTS CARNIVAL Tomorrow a small number of Bath Street students will attend the Interschool Primary School Sports Day as part of an OLSH College team. Congratulations and good luck to Laissa Crowby, Mack Malone, Sam Abrey, Kayla McCormack, Briann Rivera, Monet Hunter, Bohdan Typuszak, Ashleigh Lines, Justinn Craggs, Arkie Feehan, Ainsley Harben and Rorey Bowman. Campus News: Sadadeen 2011 SADADEEN FOUNDERS DAY CROSS COUNTRY RUN Last Friday morning the Sadadeen students took part in the Annual Cross Country run at the Telegraph Station before Founders Day. The run which is just over 3 kms was set out along the walking tracks on either side of the river. It was a great way to start the morning with all students partaking and some fierce competition from the teaching staff with the likes of Mr Raveny, Ms England and Mr Castle all looking to impress. In the battle for house points it was Achoa in 4 th place, Standley in 3rd and with only 5 points separating Gillen and Bennett it was Gillen that came up trumps with 158 points. There are several students across different age groups and year levels who will be competing for OLSH, so we wish them the best of luck.

EISTEDDFOD The Traeger Choir competed in the Eisteddfod yesterday. LOST PROPERTY: PLEASE NAME YOUR CHILDS CLOTHING!!!!!!!! There are mountains of clothes and items in Lost Property. Please get your children to check where their belongings are. In Week 11 we will have a gold coin sale of any remaining property; any unsold items will be given to charity.

HATS There are several children coming to the Front Office looking for Hats at Recess and Lunch. Could you please ensure that your students ALL have a hat, and they have not borrowed someone else’s for outside, as this is causing a flow on effect of missing and wearing other student’s hats. We have a No HAT , No PLAY policy, which will have around 10 students a day sitting inside. Please ensure your child is not one of these. 5

CASUAL CLOTHES DAYS We seem to be doing very well with the casual clothes chosen; however I need to make clear the footwear permitted so that we are fair to all. Basically, due to the OH&S conditions that involve students of the College (and all other schools) all students MUST wear closed in shoes at all times. This means that no thongs or sandals can be worn on casual clothes days nor footwear that exposes the heel of the foot. I thank the parents that have delivered the required footwear to school so far. From now on we will be consistent in this area. Students with inappropriate footwear (any day) will be asked to contact home to have the correct shoes delivered.
