B ARS AN D BEACON S On the Shoulders of Sheep Hofsos, Iceland // Spring 2018 University of Texas at Austin Advanced Design Studio, Professor Kevin Alter Winner of UT School of Architecture 2018 Design Excellence Award The Icelanders’ survival over centuries falls onto the shoulders of sheep; their meat has provided nourishment and their wool has provided warmth. The Icelandic sheep is one of the oldest purest breeds of sheep; arriving to the Island of Iceland in 840 AD and never crossing with another breed of sheep to this day. Every year come May, the sheep are released to roam free up into the highlands, surviving on moss and herbs until September when farmers find them on horseback and herd them back for sorting. This rugged lifestyle drove the sheep to develop a special dual-coated fleece to withstand the wind and rain, and the meat takes on flavorful taste from their herbaceous diet. The sheep are a source of deep cultural pride in Iceland. This design brings together sheep husbandry, butchery, and textile work to establish a butchery and weaving residency program to share the knowledge and craft of working with these animals. Formally the design is composed of bars and beacons; the bars for production-based uses - barn, wool mill, and small scale slaughterhouse - and the beacons for the pinnacles of craft with sheep products: gallery, loom room, and restaurant. Located on a sublime site between mountains and sea, the bars float along the barren landscape while the beacons act as guides, pulling the visitor out to the rugged coastline, overlooking the basaltcarved soaking pools below.

H OUSE Against the Mountain Boulder, Colorado // Fall 2015 University of Texas at Austin Vertical Studio, Professor David Heymann

A multi-generational home, poured into the land, establishes the new American homestead. A anchor against the mountain, it allows the family to observe the world outside. The design explores the idea of a foundation formed by topography, poured against the uphill condition, expanding out from the interior living spaces. As the foundation meets the sloping ground, it creates a datum of man’s imposition against the land, forming a stage on which nature plays out; snow collects and melts, puddles form and evaporate, ever-changing the amount of outdoor space available for use. The house is thin and elongated, one room and a corridor deep, visually connecting all rooms to the site. Bedrooms and communal spaces open out onto the foundation, pushing its inhabitants to circulate outdoors.

C O M POU N D Environmental Voids Austin, TX // Spring 2017 University of Texas at Austin Advanced Comprehensive Studio, Professor Martin Haettisch Partnership with Kaleigh Sawyer, M.Arch Candidate

A compound is its own village and therefore has its own moments of complexity and sanctuary, of consolidation and fragmentation. The site of this environmental technology research institute is a leftover void in the community, bisected by a commercial rail line, and wedged between a vibrant creative and industrial area and a quiet residential neighborhood. The design creates a permeable compound that acts as both a self-sufficient village for researchers as well as a vital part of the larger community. Here the infrastructure systems define the compound without a formal wall, by establishing a field condition of vertical systems, allowing the interior to bleed seamlessly into the exterior.

The building takes the horizontal systems of the traditional compound and turns them vertical, creating a field condition of vertical systems on each level of the building. Focal spaces disrupt the “goo� of infrastructure to provide areas of relief and sanctuary, where systems are pulled to the edge and space is opened for specialized program.

T H R ESHOLD Stand Sit Sleep Austin, TX // Spring 2016 University of Texas at Austin Vertical Studio, Professor Joyce Rosner

A space of configuration, dictated by thresholds, where the threshold and the resulting light condition define the actions of the space. These actions act as a procession from entering to standing, sitting to laying. As the door rotates upwards from vertical to horizontal, the threshold is lengthened to form a larger space of entry. The inner door rotates up to frame a space of sitting, marked by added natural light, and allows entry into the bedroom. When closed from inside, the bedroom is given privacy.

P I LGRIM AGE Ashes to Monarchs Sierra Madre Mountains, Mexico // Fall 2016 University of Texas at Austin Advanced Design Studio, Professors David Heymann and Hope Hasbruck Partnership with Rachel Walburton, MLA Candidate

As the lives of the dead are being celebrated across Mexico during DĂ­a de los Muertos, millions of monarch butterflies are completing a multigeneration migration from eastern North America to the 52-hectare Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in the Sierra Madre mountains in the western state of Michoacan. While these butterflies have never made this journey before, they are guided by their DNA, following the path of their great-grandparents, who made the journey the year before. Their destination is the forest of Oyamel Firs in the Sierra Madre mountains. To both Aztecs and Catholics, the butterfly represents the resurrected or returning spirit. Pilgrims embark on this journey carrying the ashes of loved ones to lay to rest below the butterflies. The ashes are placed in the forest as the spirits flutter overhead. Following the DĂ­a de los Muertos celebrations, pilgrims begin their 100mile journey west to the Reserve, staying in towns along the way. The final day of the journey begins in Anguangueo and proceeds up a steep valley. A beacon and hill town appear and disappear with the twists of the trail, guiding pilgrims to their destination: the butterflies. The plaza serves the temporal pilgrim community, providing food, accommodations and a place of worship. Above the plaza, the ashes are laid in scattering grounds or columbaria, depending on preference, in the forest of Oyamel Firs beneath the roosting butterflies.

The plaza funnels rainwater into a large cistern, with the building structure acting as a set of buttresses, to provide water for forest misters to recreate the needed forest cloud climate and preserve the habitat.

I was given the opportunity to help complete the final record drawings for the Portland Japanese Gardens Expansion, which opened in Spring 2017. The set of 32 drawings was primarily produced in Revit by myself as the sole person working on them day-to-day. Tyler Nishitani was in charge of the Construction Administration phase of the project, and he oversaw my work on the drawings, making sure they not only accurately represented the built work but that they also captured the larger idea and feeling of the design.

WO RKSPACE Curves in Movement Portland, OR // Fall 2017 Hacker Architects : Internship Project team: Nic Smith (project architect) & myself; Jennie Fowler, Janell Widmer, & Sonya Norskog (Interiors)

For the final three months of my residency, I worked full time on a project team to design a mobility company’s headquarters from the start of the Schematic Design phase and through the end of Design Development. The headquarters is going into a 3200 sq. ft. ground floor retail space and the full 26,000 sq. ft. second floor of a new building under construction. Due to the tight budget of this tenant improvement project, the design team was kept small. I was able to work closely with the project architect and contribute to all aspects of the project, especially to the design. This project allowed me to experience the nitty gritty of the design process; from early client meetings regarding the day-to-day tasks and needs of each department, to the balance of desires amongst the client group, to coordination with the shell building construction, to talks with the local architecture firm that would take over the CD phase of the project. The project had a short timeline and we therefore held weekly conference calls with the client group, in which I took meeting minutes. Even though we were designing only the interior of their space, we questioned the norms of what an office layout typically is and looked at how we could represent the mobility focus of Car2Go in the shaping of the interior experience. This is largely represented in the diagrams included, which I produced for internal design discussion as well as client meetings. Throughout the design process, I was responsible for the majority of digital modeling in SketchUp and Revit, as well as early diagramming. Unless otherwise noted, the work shown was produced by myself.

BEN CH For Temporal Living Summer 2014 Independent Work Black Walnut

A bench to hold books and a blanket, constructed with biscuit and dowel joints. Designed for the lifestyle of small apartment living and yearly moves to new apartments, a piece of furniture is needed that cannot only provide storage, but serve multiple purposes. Though designed to serve initially as a bench, today it is used as a coffee table, and holds a collection of cookbooks and a blanket.
