From WAY UP THERE!
Welcome Darlings! It’s a Brand New Year! And Millin’Air is back! Well it is but not as it was. Back when I climbed that mountain two summers ago, and sat there with my open heart gazing at all of France I had this idea for what Millin’Air would be. My original desire was to create a way to showcase my hats and combine all my passions into a form that would allow my tribe to enjoy seeing the process of what was happening, what was inspiring me, things I was learning that may help their journeys and of course, highlight the latest hat collections. What I ended up doing was much more amazing at the time, having awesome contributors and really creating a magazine…but it was more than I had time or capital to manage. So, this year I am bringing it back to the core. I’m mentally reclimbing up to the top of that mountain, sitting in the grass, drinking a chicory and cream and going back to my heart’s desire…just a view out of my lenses du jour. There are things that I just don’t want to waste my time on like…a table of contents. I know! How would one know where to look…well, darling, that is simple…flip through, see what resonates, land there. It sure saves me hours of energy that I’d rather be spending doing just about anything else! And I’m also going to be passing on the great need for editing. YES! That means there could be grammatical mishaps, but I am writing as I speak and think and saving myself (and my Mother’s eyes and time editing) well, this is valuable for me. So please, pretend we are sitting together having a tea and telling stories. No judgement on how the stories unfold…at least they are unfolding. This issue is all about the Brand New Year. Like anything new it holds possibility and nerves of the unknown, and frankly this new year there are lots of unknowns and heaps of nerves. However, I tend to want to stay as positive as I can because no matter what there is so much to feel blessed about when I really look clearly. I’ll share with you some news both exciting and challenging. And I’ll share with you some offerings that are time limited. I hope you enjoy this issue. Feel free to reach out if something about this sparks something within you. And have yourself a wonderful, prosperous, peacefilled new year!
LET'S START WITH SOMETHING
IT'S PARIS FASHION WEEK & KCM IS SHOWING!!! All that vision boarding and dreaming I do really does pay off! You know what else pays off? The people you meet and the things you say “YES!” to.
Paris Fashion Week is a HUGE moment for my business and I wanted to share with you this awesome news and a sneak peek at what I am currently designing for his collection.
I am so thrilled to announce that KCM will be featured in a Paris Fashion Week runway show. Three years ago, right around this time, I was offered to showcase during New York Fashion Week. I said a great BIG “YES!!” A month later my hats were in a runway show held at the Harlem Library, iconic and perfect. It was there that I met the designer and artist who I am collaborating with for PFW. In fact, he was the one to invite me to NYFW and now he has extended that invite to Paris to create hats for his clothing collection. I look forward to sharing with you his designs and his name but right now he is keeping the lid on everything on his side. However, I am not. I love bringing people into the process behind the BIG moments of Life.
We will be featured in a showcase of young and established designers from all around the world. It is a unique and wonderful opportunity and I feel BLESSED beyond belief! In the end, I will create eight hats four for women, four for men. Here’s a sampling of what is in the studio thus far.
I LOVE the shape of this style different at every angle
A likely trim for this blue fur felt topper. For the PFW show a version of this hat will be made in black toyo.
A free form sculpted turban of vintage wide grosgrain ribbon. J'Adore!
A version of the style above will be created for the men to wear. Some brims will be down, others flipped up changing the shape of the hat.
Cocktail hat made of vintage wide grosgrain. Will be put onto a base and held with elastic.
now is the time! tell me about the hat of your dreams!
Have you been dreaming of a hat you’d like to see come to reality? Has something inspired you lately? Do you have a new power color you are rocking in your wardrobe? Has there been a style of hat you’ve seen in one of my collections but wished it were in a different shade, a different material, a different trim? I completely understand. There are all sorts of reasons one may want a completely customized hat and not always is this a service that I can offer. But I did hear you last year. I did receive your requests and I know you had ideas in mind and while I couldn’t accommodate at the time I am dedicating from now through February to making The Hats of Your Dreams. Through February 18th I will be taking custom orders. Darlings this is for you, for The Hats of YOUR Dreams so it doesn’t matter what season you are dreaming about. Spring. Summer, Winter, Fall, fancy, or classic, painted, simple, or completely out of the box. Talk to me about your ideas…let’s get you the perfect hat for your perfect you. There is a deadline darlings…orders must be placed no later than Feb. 18th. Turnaround time will depend upon your requests and will be decided when we discuss your hat. Please email your ideas and include pictures or links where you can. We will set up a time for a call or google hangout to discuss the details.

breakthrough When Life Leads You Back To Your Heart I was let go just before the holidays after almost a year of service managing a market of Artists and Designers, of doing my very best to champion entrepreneurs. I strived to get these entrepreneurs the support they needed. Ideas, clients, and bottom line making sales. I was given a zero budget for marketing. And now I am here, in my new studio with a zero budget to start my whole dang business up… again. My goal has always been from the start to make my livelihood as an artist. Whether I am painting or designing, if it was creative and inspired that was my choice. This meant I had to take big chances. I had to sacrifice many of the comforts and stability that normal careers bring. Owning a house is almost out of the question. At least it felt that way for most of the 20+ years I have been creating but here I am today the leaseholder for my NYC apartment…that is a dream come true. When I reflected, I saw that indeed, each time I hit a crossroads I HAD made progress. I did step UP to the next level. And here I am at a crossroads and this time I have a fashion show I am preparing for… for Paris Fashion Week! Total dream come true! Am I nervous? Worried about the looming end of the month? Of course, I am human. But I am also empowered. I learned so much about the market side of life last year. So valuable. So grateful for this. I created an amazing studio right inside my apartment. I’ve learned what I love to do and what I’d like to source out. I picked up a paintbrush and a canvas and remembered just how much I adore painting. I feel confident in the gifts that God has given me and I know they were given to me to use. And I am using them. I am investing in them. I am a Designer of Compliments. I design so that my clients are complimented, by strangers, and often. I encourage people to wear their whimsy on their heads, to feel confident, to feel empowered themselves. It’s a wonderful choice. So, I thank you for your support all these years, for wearing your hats, for letting me know about the wonderful times you have had while doing so. I look forward to this Brand New Year. I look forward to the direction KCM is going in. I look forward to continuing being the designer for some of the compliments in your life. Happy New Year Loves!
