Katherine High School Principal’s Update

Year 8

It has been a really calm start to the year, staff have been concentrating on finalising their teaching programs and assessment schedules. All students should have received their first assessment items and should be back into the routine of school. With increased student numbers there tends to be congestion at the bus drop off zone at the front of the school at the end of day. We are insisting that students not catching a bus vacate the school premises within minutes of the bell sounding for the end of school, this will be a focus over the coming weeks. Our first parent ‘Meet and Greet’ evening will be held on Wednesday 29th February (5-6:30pm) in the School Gym and I encourage all parents to come along and meet their child’s teachers; appointments not neccessary. Please email me if you have any concerns and look forward to touching base throughout the year. Anne White Principal

Lynda Leigh

Health Promoting School Nurse Lynda is employed by NT Department of Health to provide information regarding healthy life choices to the students and families within Katherine High School. Lynda can be contacted anytime to discuss concerns regarding a child’s health whilst at school. Students can find Lynda in lower P block, between lab 3 and 4 (the door to the science prep room). Consent forms for immunisations have been posted. Please return the consent forms to the front office by 29th February. Clinics will commence in March.

Year 8 Summary

Year 8 has had a fantastic start to 2012. Not only are all students wearing their full school uniform, reports from many classroom teachers have also been positive. The Year 8 Performing Arts class is leading the way with teacher Miss Elliott. They are working towards creating their first 16 beat choreographed dance as a group and really bonding as a class. The boys and girls are enjoying doing many flips, kicks and jumps in the dances. ‘Greece’ has been a popular dance theme for the students. Keep your eye out for some amazing dances to come. Congratulations also go to Year 8 sporting house Captains who were elected by their peers. The house captains are; Red House – Chelsea Coburn and Connor Stevens, Blue House – Emily Bayliss and Jackson Wolfe, Yellow House – Hayley Lye and James Morgan, Green House – Jaiyah Burrows and Chelsea Grahek. With the swimming carnival coming up in week 6, it is a great time to show the Katherine High School community what Year 8 2012 is made of! I hope to see a huge turnout to participate in such a fun school event. You don’t have to be the best; you just have to have a go! Keep up the great work! Peta Newsome Year 8 Coordinator

School Ready

Thursday 16 February School Ready students headed to Top Didj Cultural Experience for some fun activities that involved them getting their hands dirty, but also using their artistic prowess at the same time. Students made their way out to Top Didj which is just 15km from school on the way out to Nitmiluk, and were greeted by Petrina, Manual and Adriana. They spoke about their stories and gave the students an introduction into their different types of artwork. Students then got to choose which type of artwork they would like to do. After the painting the students were shown how to light a fire and how to throw a spear. Wyatt Ogilvy led us off and his second throw hit the fake kangaroo. Overall it was a fun filled day with many smiles and laughs had by all. Nick Abbott School Ready Teacher

Girls Junior AFL

Round One It was an exciting evening for the junior girls of Katherine as they kicked off their 6 week girls AFL 9’s competition at Nitmiluk Oval last Wednesday night. On oval 2, the two Katherine High School teams Red v Blue played against each other in a close game. The Red team led by Bonnie Fejo started well and with Treffina Dann kicking 2 goals and Sharlene Lewis playing well they held a handy lead of 18 pts at half time. The Blue team started to pick up the pace of the game and with Melina Kopp (two goals) starting to look dangerous around goal, ran over the Reds late in the game and won 4.8.32 to Red 3.3.21 On oval 1 the traditional rivals Beswick and Barunga played a terrific game that was close all the way. After the Crows held a good lead the Bears fought back and with Susanna Weetra and Rhianne Bush kicking 2 goals each Beswick ran out winners 7.12.54 to 6.8.44. The sign on for senior girls was held and a senior woman’s game was played this Wed night 7pm between a Katherine invitation Team and a Team from Jilkminggan / barunga. FOOTBALL Katanning Academy February 2012

Hit the ground running Words by Matthew Hamdorf Photos by Ryan Woolfe

2012 has seen the arrival of 34 new Year 7 academy members in the Katherine Clontarf program. With the boys keen and signed up, the academy held its first training session on Monday, February 6, with over 30 Academy members turning up. The training session started with Tyrone Fejo and Daniel Turner taking the new Academy members through the warm up. With the Katherine Karraks warm, we quickly got into some handball drills. The Karraks had a couple of surprise visitors with Katherine High School staff Tom Glesson and Damien Charlston joining in the training session. The boys quickly showed off the skills with Lenny Lawrence leading the way with his fine kicking skills. What was most impressive was watching how the new members encouraged and supported each other while practicing their skills. To finish of our session the boys organised two teams and participated in a handball game. With quick ball movement and fantastic teamwork from both sides, the year looks promising for the Katherine Karracks. The Katherine Clonatrf Academy would like to welcome all new and existing Academy members to 2012. With a new influx of members and the retention of last year’s group, 2012 promises to be an exciting year.
