In the world of Muay Thai you say „ous“ to show your respect to someone. And it is all about respect.
Muay Thai, or Kickboxing is a tough sport. It‘s not just about your physicial shape, but also about your psyche. You always have to be one step faster than your opponent. In the North of Amsterdam there‘s a small Mai Thai gym. It has about 170 members and its very special owner Sensei Saban. People who come here to train see more in Muay Thai than just a sport. They are living for it.
‚‚I USED TO BE THE BEST FIGHTER OF HOLLAND. AND THE FIRST ONE.“ Sensei Saban
„I hate when people say that all fighters are crimainals. Just because there‘s one motherfucker, it doesn‘t mean that they are all motherfuckers.“
„And you have motherfuckers everywhere, right?“
„Muay Thai is about respect. If you don‘t have respect, you can go. But if you have respect, then you take it with you. Out on the street. It‘s all about respect. Always. You say „ous“ to show your respect“.
„I‘m a muslim but I respect all religions. Everybody should believe in what he wants to.“
„Maggi is my fighter. She‘s my child. I have so much respect for her“
„It‘s mentally the hardest sport I‘ve ever tried out. Even if someone hurts you, you still have to concentrate. If I let the pain into my head, I‘ll loose.“
„I fight against boys. And they respect me. They don‘t see me as a girl, they see me as a fighter. I feel at home here.“
„I‘m not coaching here for the money. Muay Thai is my life, and I don‘t care about the money.“
„People can always come here. No matter what their backgound is. They are welcome in my gym as long as they have respect.“
„Tyson comes and goes. He comes and goes. He just likes me because of the food.“
„Stefani is my fighter. He‘s a professional fighter. He comes from Bulgaria. He can go back whenever he wants to. But he likes it here.“
„There are no boundries, what you can learn or achieve. You can always go one step further.“
„It‘s my outlet. I can leave every problem that I have in my head here. And then my thoughts are clean again.“
„It makes you stronger. you get self-confidence and that helps you everywhere“.
„My fighters are my children. I know all of them and they are like family to me.“
