AN EVENING WITH STEVE EARLE With Joel Savoy, Linzay Young and Dirk Powell Thurs January 12 & Fri 13, 2012 @ 8:00 PM, AcA’s James Devin Moncus Theater Individual Tickets:  $19, $23, $27

The quintessential Louisiana artist, whose instantly recognizable voice made Tell It Like It Is a million-seller back in 1967, brings his world-renowned gift to the James D. Moncus Theater for an evening of intimate music, accompanied by a single pianist.   ACCORDION BLOWOUT: CAJUN, ZYDECO, LEBANESE AND CONJUNTO Wed October 19, 2011 @ 7:00 PM, Central School Theatre, Lake Charles October 20 & 21, 2011 @ 8:00 PM, AcA’s James Devin Moncus Theater Individual Tickets:  $19, $23, $27

Creative whirlwind Steve Earle has been at the apex of American music for over thirty years.  In addition to releasing Grammy-winning CDs, scoring films, and writing novels, he has a key role in the HBO series Treme, for which he wrote the profoundly moving This City, a song about New Orleans after Katrina.  This solo acoustic show will feature collaboration with some of the musicians featured in Treme, including Joel Savoy and Linzay Young, along with friend Dirk Powell.

Four virtuoso performers unite in a celebration of Louisiana’s most distinctive and spirited instrument.  Kristi Guillory and Bonsoir Catin will deliver harddriving Cajun music, while Elias Lammam will share his unique Arabic sounds and technical mastery.  Corey Ledet will hit hard with his full-on Zydeco band and, last but not least, Eva Ybarra, the first woman to play Conjunto music in Texas, will treat us to fiery cumbias, polkas and more.

Wed March 7, 2012 @ 7:00 PM, Central School Theatre, Lake Charles Thurs March 8 & Fri 9, 2012 @ 8:00 PM, AcA’s James Devin Moncus Theater Individual Tickets:  $19, $23, $27   Marksville native Little Walter Jacobs, the father of amplified Blues harmonica, hasn’t always received recognition for his deep-running Creole roots.  We hope to change that with this show! James Cotton, who made his recording debut for Sun Records in 1953, is a harmonica legend and Little Walter’s peer in every sense.  When Little Walter was inducted into the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame, James Cotton paid tribute – he’ll do the same for us here in Louisiana, with his world-class band in tow. There’ll be a few surprise guests to boot.   DE TEMPS ANTAN, CEDRIC WATSON, ANNA LAURA EDMISTON AND DAVID GREELY: EXPLORING QUEBECOIS, ACADIAN AND CAJUN/CREOLE CONNECTIONS Wed April 11, 2012 @ 7:00 PM, Central School Theatre, Lake Charles Thurs April 12 & Fri 13, 2012 @ 8:00 PM, AcA’s James Devin Moncus Theater Individual Tickets:  $19, $23, $27

The connections between the traditional music of Francophone Canada and Louisiana are undeniable but largely unexplored. This show will take us on that journey, led by world-class performers on both sides of the line. De Temps Antan are at the pinnacle of Quebecois music, featuring virtuoso fiddler André Brunet, along with stellar guitarist and musical scholar Eric Beaudry and master accordionist Pierre-Luc DuPuis.  They will collaborate with top Louisiana artists David Greely, Anna Laura Edmiston and Cedric Watson.   ZIGABOO MODELISTE, KING OF THE FUNKY DRUMS Thurs May 10, 2012 @  8:00 PM, AcA’s James Devin Moncus Theater Individual Tickets: $19, $23, $27 If you haven’t heard Zigaboo’s incredibly tight and genre-defining drumming on the original recordings of The Meters, or the pivotal Wild Tchoupitoulas recordings of the 1970s, you’ve undoubtedly heard one of the countless times he’s been sampled during the last several decades.  A first generation creator of Louisiana funk, Zigaboo has worked with The Rolling Stones and countless others.  This show, featuring his hardgrooving seven-piece band, will be the perfect high-energy closer to the season.

The Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers is a program of South Arts. Southern Circuit screenings are funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. Special support for Southern Circuit was provided by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.

From Bible belt to Iron Curtain, the movies featured in this year’s Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers will transport viewers into new worlds with dance sensationals, animated weekends and heartbreaking coming-of-age stories that span the globe. The Acadiana Center for the Arts brings these extraordinary dramas and documentaries to downtown Lafayette alongside their equally extraordinary filmmakers for viewing, discussion and enjoyment of the cinematic arts.  Southern Circuit is the nation’s only regional tour of independent filmmakers, providing communities with an interactive way of experiencing independent film. The tour takes the audience away from their televisions, DVD players and computers to connect them with independent filmmakers and encourage them to talk with one another about the films and their meanings.  Southern Circuit transforms watching independent films from a solitary experience into a communal one. Following the screening of each feature film, the filmmaker and the audience will engage in a discussion about the film and their work as filmmakers.

Following her year-long creative exploration in the James Devin Moncus Theater, artistin-residence Paige Krause and her collective, (C)ollaborate 78, premiere a bold new work entitled I’ve Stopped Having That Dream I’ve Been Having. A dance/music/installation piece that incorporates the sincerity of humanistic connections, Krause creates a unique performance by investigating and introducing her own voice within the modern dance genre. Four performers challenge the line between reality and fantasy while interpreting and unfolding the complex interactions of relationships between individuality and uniformity. This exciting and inventive performance uses the flexibility of the theater to transform the space into a live installation, performed to an original and live score from composer Philippe Landry.

Prospect Lafayette

NOV 12TH - JANUARY 21ST

The most exciting development for Acadiana’s visual arts scene is the selection of AcA as a satellite location of Prospect.2 New Orleans. Prospect.2 is one of the most highly anticipated contemporary arts events in the United States. This exhibition is coordinated with the opening and closing of Prospect.2, the most significant international arts bi-annual in North America, for which it will comprise both an annex and a historical overview. Prospect Lafayette will feature works by Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson as well as Bruce Davenport, Jr., Dawn Dedeaux and significant works originally shown in Prospect.1 and Prospect.1.5. AcA is proud to partner with Prospect.2 and would like to thank Prospect curator Dan Cameron for assembling this exhibition.
