PRESIDENT’S WELCOME On behalf of the UNSW Debating Society (DebSoc), I welcome you to this sponsorship prospectus and thank you for your interest. DebSoc is an active organisation that hosts weekly seminars in public speaking, a range of networking events and competitions throughout the year. Significantly, we train and financially assist some of UNSW’s brightest students to attend prestigious debating competitions around the world. Our goal is to develop a relationship with Freehills so that we can continue promoting and supporting debating at UNSW. This prospectus outlines the ways in which we can help you develop brand presence and give you direct access to a pool of unique and high-achieving law students. Many of our alumni choose to take graduate positions at top law firms.  This is because debating attracts students who are articulate, well-informed and highly motivated, and also helps to develop the very skills in communication, teamwork and critical thinking that are essential in dynamic corporate workplaces.

Debating requires students to argue for the merits of a policy they may not necessarily agree with. Students learn to fluently draw upon examples in current affairs, logic and rationality justify their positions. In doing so, they develop skills in persuasion and they improve their understanding of how law interacts with policy, the economy and the international sphere.  A relationship with DebSoc allows you to target law students who are influential thought-leaders in their cohort. Our most active members include, for example, the 2010 and 2011 Presidents of the UNSW Law Society, many senior mooters and UNSW Law Journal members. Our law students have also learnt to work well in interdisciplinary teams and to speak the language of other disciplines like business, science and technology, and ethics. We rely on sponsors such as Freehills for the means to provide access to international training and competitions. This prospectus contains more information about the specific benefits that sponsorship can offer your firm. I look forward to meeting with you to discuss the ways that we can work together in 2012. Yours Sincerely, David Ong

ABOUT UNSW DebSoc DebSoc is the resident Debating Club at UNSW, with a membership base of over 500 people in 2011. DebSoc is proud to be one of the most active debating societies nationally. We strive to meaningfully contribute to campus culture as well as to proudly represent UNSW through our outstanding achievements on the global stage. Some of our recent achievements include: • Finalists at the Worlds Intervarsity Debating Championships (2010, 2011, 2012) (Worlds) • Guests, and top ten speakers, at the IDEA Invitational Tournament, an exclusive tournament hosted in New York for the top 16 debating teams in the world (2011) • Grand Finalists in the televised the United States’ British Parliamentary Championships, where we were the exclusive Australian guests (2011) • Grand Finalists at the Melbourne University British Parliamentary Championships (2011) • Exclusive guests at the World Universities Peace Invitational Debate (WUPID), the pre-Worlds Tournament for the top 30 institutions in the world (2011) • Second Best Speaker (2010, 2011), Fourth Best Speaker (2009) and Fifth Best Speaker (2011) in Australia, at the Australian Intervarsity Debating Championships • Finalists at the Australian Intervarsity Debating Championships (2009, 2010, 2011) • Ninth Best Speaker (2009) and Fifteenth Best Speaker (2010) in Australasia, at the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships (Australs) • Finalists at the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships (2009, 2010) • Grand Finalists at the Australian Intervarsity Women’s Debating Championships (2009)

DebSoc is also involved in a broad range of other activities: • In 2010, we launched our own tournament, the UNSW IV. In 2011, we saw debaters from all across Australia, including Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide and Canberra attend the only tournament of its kind in the world. The UNSW IV won the 2010 Arc Event of the Year Award, and the 2010 Innovation Grant • DebSoc hosts a number of Public Debates throughout the year. For instance, during the height of the GFC, DebSoc hosted a central, well-attended Public Debate ‘That we should fire the senior management of companies that receive government bail outs’ (2008). Other Public Debates we have hosted include ‘That oil companies should not be allowed to hold patents on renewable technologies’ (2010) and ‘That we should not support austerity budgets’ (2011). • Every week, DebSoc hosts our ‘Internals’ Debating evening, which include seminars on important issues, provide training kits and facilitate debates for all interested students. Our Internals Vice President creates a dynamic curriculum to help debaters to develop over the year • In 2008, DebSoc hosted the Australian Intervarsity Women’s Debating Championships • In 2013, DebSoc intends to host the Australian Intervarsity Debating Championships

WHY PARTNER WITH DebSoc? Like Freehills, DebSoc has a keen interest in recruiting the law school’s brightest students. At UNSW, approximately 70 per cent of our members are law students, and law students frequently excel to represent DebSoc at the highest levels. For instance, in 2010 and 2011, a team of two law students were finalists at Worlds, and both of the Finals judges at Worlds 2012 were also law students. We believe that some of the brightest students in our law school are actively involved in university debating. Frequently, our student members win Faculty medals and prizes, and are recipients of the most illustrious academic scholarships, such as the Rhodes Scholarship in 2011 and 2012. The emphasis on analytical and critical thinking, problem solving ability and the privileging of rationality, logic and persuasion, which are manifestly important in the legal discipline, are also core values in debating. This philosophical symmetry explains why the most dominating proportion of university students who participate in debating study law, both across Australia and internationally. Finally, many of our members are highly driven to enter corporate legal careers, and regularly and have gone to work at Freehills, as well as other top-tier firms. Some of our current members and Alumni who have undertaken clerkships and graduate positions at Freehills include: • Angela Kintominas (DebSoc President 2010 and Freehills Summer Clerk 2011/12) • Natalie Karam (DebSoc Vice President 2012 and Freehills Summer Clerk 2010/11) • Nick Carney (Freehills Senior Associate) • Tom Bowes (DebSoc President 2008 and Freehills Solicitor) • David Hume (Freehills Solicitor)

• Gill White (former Freehills Solicitor) • Andrew Sudol (former Freehills Solicitor) • Hannah Glass (Freehills Summer Clerk 2011/12) • Tom Liu (Freehills Summer Clerk 2010/11) • Emily Rumble (Freehills Summer Clerk 2011/12)

A partnership between Freehills and DebSoc will provide many benefits: • By signing on as the exclusive Australian law firm sponsor of DebSoc, many of the Law School’s top students who are involved with debating will be encouraged to apply for clerkships with Freehills, and will preference Freehills as the ‘right fit’ over Australia’s competing top-tier firms; • Supporting debating will support many law students who are involved in DebSoc, especially disadvantaged students who seek to attend the Australasian or Worlds Championships; and • Supporting debating will ensure that Freehills is seen to have an active interest in maintaining and supporting the competitive, academic and intellectual spaces of university culture.

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES (prices are negotiable depending on benefits)

In DebSoc’s first year of seeking external sponsorship, the society believes that the best way to cultivate a long term relationship with external sponsors is to enter into exclusive sponsorship arrangements with industry leaders. This structure reflects the diversity of students that comprise DebSoc’s membership.
