letter from the editor Dear Reader, When I was just seven years old, I eagerly became the creator and sole writer of The Cold Spring Trail News, my first ever publication. I passed it out to all of my family members to give them an inside look of my life. Now, as a graduating high school senior, I reflect. In the midst of the hustle and bustle of high school, it is rare to sit back and reflect on who you’ve become and want to be. I have transformed from someone shy and anxious to someone tackling opportunities, such as becoming the Editor-in-Chief of the GBHS Newspaper, The Bobcat Banner. I have discovered my underlying strengths of communications, leadership, and creativity. I have realized that I should follow my passion to major in Communications and minor in Political Science at the University of Michigan-Flint. And I have big dreams from there. What better way to reflect on my passions, strengths, hopes and dreams with what started it all, journalism? I have realized that I’m still that publisher of The Cold Spring Trail News in 2007. The only thing different about this edition is that I’ve grown into a confident, creative student eager to make my mark on the world. I hope by reading this you can get a new understanding of who I am today and how I’m going to make a difference.

Becoming a Communicator A STRENGTH FOR COMMUNICATIONS I discovered a great deal of my communications strength when I acted as the “communicator” of my group in the Leadership Exploration and Development class. I managed communications to organize a media event where myself and three others presented the Flint Institute of Arts with Enchroma Glasses, so that people who are color blind can check out the glasses and experience full color in the museum. I had to organize who was attending, be interviewed on ABC 12 and NBC 25 / Fox 66, and even reschedule because of weather complications. I was able to work a lot with Chene Koppitz, the Communications Director at the museum. I learned what it takes to be someone involved in communications and it helped me realize that communications is my strength and my future career. Through high school, I’ve slowly become less and less shy through my extra curricular activities, and have found my strength and passion for building relationships with others.
I learned a lot about Communications when I helped organize the NBC 25 / FOX 66 News event at the Flint Institute of Arts. We presented Enchroma glasses to the museum for color deficient people to enjoy.

The Role of Editor
TRANSFORMING THE BOBCAT BANNER At the end of my sophomore year, I was chosen to be Editor-in-Chief of the Bobcat Banner, which is the newspaper at Grand Blanc High School. Through my drive and determination to completely transform the newspaper, I discovered that I had a strength for leading those around me. Despite being younger, I learned how to lead my peers and make the newspaper a more professional publication for the community. I learned how to organize and teach others aspects in journalism. I have learned valuable skills of how to properly interact, teach, and impact my peers in a positive manner. Being a student led publication, this newfound leadership will apply directly to a job setting and how I go about life in a positive manner for many years. Not only will I continue to be involved in journalism in the future, but my leadership is a strength that will follow me in all aspects of college, work, and even family life. This strength is significantly valuable to my future.

FINDING CREATIVITY THROUGH ART PROGRAMS In my high school career, I became immersed in the arts. I was involved in the instrumental music program, theatre, and newspaper. The arts have given me the opportunity to express myself and inspire those around me, aspects necessary in communicating with others in my future career. In newspaper, I discovered my strength for design and photography. Design and creativity are what enhance your communicative skills and what inspires an audience. I know that with my artistic ability and creativity through design, I can inspire others and make my communications more impactful in a career setting.
My years in band have given me the strength of creativity and expression, which is necessary in careers.

WHAT WILL I DO IN 1 YEAR? 5 YEARS? 10 YEARS?

How Far I 1 YEAR FROM NOW
One year from now, I will be a freshman at the University of Michigan-Flint. I hope to be at least a staff writer on their publication, The M Times, which is a job opportunity on campus. I will also be participating in freelance writing through the company Upwork, writing press releases and articles. These experiences will prepare me for my future career in communications as I will be immersed in journalism and actual work that a communications director would take part in and get income to support my college expenses.
5 YEARS FR
Five years from no my field of Communicatio ship. This could be a Com someone in Public Relati based in the Genesee Co moved out of my curren own when I graduate from of communications and l school along with my coll help me establish a netw job.

ow, I hope to have a job in ons, or at least an internmmunications Director, ions, or a reporter that is ounty area. I hope to have nt house and be living on m college. My experiences leadership through high lege work experience will work to easily get this first
10 YEARS FROM NOW
In 10 years, I will be 28 years old. In this time, I hope to have obtained a prestigious job in my field that combines politics and communications, such as a White House Press Secretary. I hope to have obtained a “director” or “editor” position through an organization. I would like to earn a salary that would qualify me to fit into the middle class, such as $70,000 annually. While it is difficult to plan this, my goal by this time would also be to be married, living in a house, and owning one pet.

In order to achieve my goals, I need to work on refining my resume and consistently updating my portfolio. This will help me when I apply for jobs that deal with journalism. I should start establishing connections with the M Times so they will perhaps know me before I apply. Additionally, I need to practice writing press releases and researching what they entail. Since I am accustomed to writing articles, I should start expanding my horizon and becoming familiar with what someone in the workforce outside of journalism encounters. Perhaps I would need to create a bank account of my own so that I can pay for things instead of my parents.
In order to achieve my goal five years from now, I should develop positive relationships with my Communications professors so that I can receive quality recommendations for a job. Since I will have less than five years of experience, I hope to earn a total compensation of $45,000 a year. I can take the time to prepare for this goal by looking at all of the career options, including a director of a non-profit organization or a Marketing Communications Director, where I can incorporate my creativity strengths. I can look into housing costs. An apartment in my county ranges from $500 to $1,250. I should make sure my income can cover this cost.
I can achieve my goal of White House Press Secretary or Communications Director by following my passion for political science, my future minor in college. I can network through political campaigns so that people know who I am before they select who works for the government official. If my career follows another path, I can continue to rise up in the Communications field and someday become an Executive Director in the job setting. Additionally, with my future husband, I would need to have saved $35,000 for a wedding and $21,000 for a cat’s lifetime.
