The Stollery Children’s Hospital Ambulatory Clinic is a stage 2 renovation project. The assignment focused on creating a child friendly environment that also catered to the needs of the children’s family members. These needs were balanced with the strict design requirements for materials and universal access that were prescribed by Alberta Health Services and design decisions previously made is stage one of the renovation. (Designed in a team of three) Some of the design elements included: - Underwater theme - Colour and sea creature decals for wayfinding - Transparent colour panels for colourful/changing light

Alder, a vegan purse retailer, is the result of a branding and design assignment for a kiosk located in Cross Iron Mills outlet mall in Calgary, Alberta. The design was to balance the strict aesthetic and design requirements proscribed by the mall while creating an elegant and functional kiosk. (Designed with Suzanne Mulder) The main features include: - Waterfall wood/solid surface counter - Adaptable display that uses sliding pegs to create modular shelves (seen in the Perspective Detail) - Multiple level shelves for merchandising - Undercounter Storage - Copper white and walnut colour pallet - Seasonal advertising and display case

Roof Top Garden Vireo means to be verdant, to be green, and to be full of life. This is the perfect name for a new apartment tower in the downtown area. Designed by a team of 7, Vireo Tower won the Overall Best Design award for Procura’s Kingsway Professional Building Renovation Scholarship.

VIREO TOWER

PROCURA SCHOLARSHIP

Based on the idea of an industrial garden, the building focuses on integrating the existing brick and industrial themes found in the Kingsway area and introduces plants and sustainable building concepts to the structure. The tower is set upon the original building structure and continues the pre-existing terracing, slowly rotating each floor to make a dynamic facade that twists as the tower rises higher into the air.

2nd Floor Plan Merino Place was designed in collaboration with 5 other students for a scholarship sponsored by the CSC and Alberta Housing. Its design focuses on creating touch points throughout the site to help create opportunities for community building.

Examples of this includes a communal fire place at the entrance of the building that is wrapped by a two-story staircase and mezzanine that interconnect the floors. Seating areas are also interspersed throughout the building and can accommodate individuals or groups of people. This interconnection is also expressed in the carpet tile pattern and bulkheads that connect neighbor’s doors, visually showing that the community is linked.

Perspective - SketchUp Designed for an entry in a design and construction documentation scholarship sponsored by Dialog. This submission is still in progress and has been selected as one of the top 4 entries and will be presented for final evaluation in April 2018. The design uses organic, curvilinear lines in the horizontal plane to create movement and flow throughout the space. Rectilinear and geometric vertical elements are used to indicate places to stop and create a rhythm through the pace with movement and rest points. An example of a rest point is the reception desk. The built in seating and desk use organic curves to direct people through the space, while the geometric pattern of the photo frame wall behind the desk indicates a place they can pause to rest or get information form the reception.

Project Poster & Site Analysis - In-Design

Perspective - Rhinoceros/Photoshop

The Edworthy Interpretation Centre was a building assignment to create a structure for a unique landscape. After visiting the site and doing an analysis, the steep hills along the river valley were selected as the building site. This allowed for unique views of the surrounding ecosystem that is ideal for an environmental education institution. Each room has a specific choreographed view and highlights the changing plant life and geography at different heights along the valley slope. Its height also allows for an unimpeded view of the valley’s placement in relation to the greater city scape of Calgary.

The Pod was a continuation of the Edworthy Site Analysis project that helped developed the Interpretation Center on the previous page. Hidden in the foliage, the Pod is recessed into the ground with a retractable awning cover. It creates a space for a person to escape from the world, to sit and read, to relax and to observe nature. The retractable awning is made with a canvas material that allows light penetrating the trees to create shadowy patterns and moving light on the interior of the Pod’s roof. Stones and drainage bellow the pod allows the water in the ecosystem to run bellow or around the structure, helping to keep it dry and integrating it into the environment.

Wave is a furniture design project that is inspired by the movement of sound. Taking inspiration from piano keys, individual slats are linked together in a manner that allows the top of the coffee table to open in a moving organic curve.

Multiple versions were designed to make a collection that includes different heights of coffee tables and a credenza. The project was designed using the Rhinoceros software and rendered using V-Ray. The Cat Bed was a design project sponsored by Pets in the Park. Each pet bed was to be auctioned off at the end of the project to help them raise money for their programs. Inspired by modern architecture, the doweled slats create beautiful shadows. It also doubles as the perfect place to drag toys to pay with a cat inside. These dowels are also removable and can be slid out of position to remove a stubborn cat.

Suspension is a sculptural exploration of tension and the definition of interior and exterior spaces. It was made with yarn and twine sewn between a heavy wooden base and a suspended wooden ring. The entire structure is help together by the tension of these elements. In these photographs light is used as an instrumental tool to highlight the divide between interior on exterior spaces.

This collection of images is a compilation of my exploration in clay.

MUD

With my use of clay, I learned about tactility and texture and the create brainstorming that can happen during an organic and nonlinear creative process.

EXPLORATIONS IN CLAY

As I explored I learned the properties of clay and how one medium can be used in a versatile way. - Crunched clay can look like a gnarled stump - Clay can be refined and molded, letting itself be shaped into a human bust - Tiles can be used a topographical explorations mimicking deforestation and used as a charette tool of architecture and landscape topologies.
