Karma PWD’s Newsletter     Happy Spring Karma Family, First I cannot express enough to all of you, what a privilege and honor it is to have you all in my life! It is hard to believe that our beloved pups are turning one and two! WOW, how time fly’s:) I realize that this latest newsletter is way overdue..... As many of you know this year has had many challenges for me health-wise. I am however very happy to report, that I am enjoying and expecting a full and complete recovery. I want to thank each and every one of you for your support, thoughts and prayers during that rough time. I truly pride myself as a breeder who is always available to answer and address any questions or concerns, so I most appreciated your patience. Of course I would be remiss if I did not give a huge shout out and thank you to my dear friend, Kim duCharme Nickerson, whom graciously stepped up, and in to speak with some of you when I was unable. Kim and I share a tremendous love for everything PWD and I so appreciate all the knowledge and expertise Kim has brought to Karma! Kim has always played an important role as a trusted confidant, she is so very loved and a valued member of the Karma family. HAPPY BIRTHDAY KARMA PUPPIES!!!!! I don’t know about you, but I just find it hard to believe a year has almost passed! It still feels so fresh, meeting you all for the first time, raising all these wonderful puppies and then having them join their new families. Clearly they are all thriving as they become a beloved member of your family. It is this part that so touch’s my heart and the part I love the most about why I do what do! As you know, you were not alone in raising your new pup, I too am, raising a puppy, Seal who was #7 out of 10! Having “Mika” CH Wayfarer CnSand Pure Karma RN THD CGC Registered Service Dog, your babies Momma..LOL!! Then being blessed with sweet “Eight” CH Karma CnSand The Beat Goes On CGC, needless to say Seal has had some big paws to fill and she does not disappoint! Seal has been a wonderful addition to my family, with a fun and loving spirit that is only matched by her beauty. I have had fun taking her to puppy k, and even managed to take a beginner agility course with her of which she is proving to be a natural. I truly recommend this activity and all of the other many great activities available to each and everyone of you! I also had a tremendous time with Eight this winter, where we completed our first beginner nose work course. Our Porties seem to have a real natural ability for this discipline as well. As for Mika, well, she has been busy doing what she does best, being my forever faithful, trusted and loving companion. Mika has been by my side throughout my illness. Now it’s time for Mika to have some fun too, as we prepare for summer and water activities. I’m humbled and proud to have recently celebrated 24 years of marriage to my amazing husband, Michael and even more thrilled to be taking a well deserved vacation to Portugal between May 6-20. I will have internet access if anyone should need to contact me. Finally, there is a ton of information here and links to explore in this Karma Spring edition. I hope you find it interesting, thought provoking, entertaining and most of all educational. I am learning constantly about our dogs and what is best for them, and there is no better way to learn than to share information. On behalf of my entire family, I wish you all a very happy and healthy holiday and remember...... Never underestimate the power of Karma!                                                                                                                                          ~Anat

Karma PWD’s Newsletter Important Things To Know....

Turning one and two are both important milestones in a puppies life. Each one has it’s challenges and here I would like to talk to you about them. Let’s first talk about turning one! Seems we have all survived potty training, nipping, some sleepless nights and let’s not forget the on going training. Your puppy is entering adulthood,

PWD not the other way around! Your puppy should be bright, energetic super smart and full of fun antics. Some of your Porties may be very vocal as they do have their own opinions about things..LOL! No doubt that your puppy continues to amaze and entertain you every day as he learns grows and thrives. but still very much an adolescent. They should be outgrowing the impulse to take everything in their mouth and chew on it, (Seal has not gotten that memo!) and for the most part the trial and error of the basic learning phase should be slowing if not over. Notice I said BASIC! By now, you should have the sense that you are owned by your

What to expect from your 12 month old puppy... How Big?~ It’s likely your Porties have stopped growing but historically they mature much slower than most breeds and can take up to 24 months to reach full maturity. Your 12 month old are still very playful and curious and need plenty of exercise! It’s best to keep your pup lean and strong as growth plates are still forming. Teething~ Your pup should have all their permanent teeth, all 42 of them and brushing them is part of a healthy regimen. I always make sure I have plenty of safe chewing toys and food items. As a rule of thumb I personally never give my dogs ANYTHING made in China, food or toys. I also never feed raw hide as it can sometimes cause a blockage. I like to give my crew frozen turkey necks, dried trachea by Bravo and kongs filled with a variety of treats. I would like to also talk to you about marrow bones. There have been several reports that puppy’s are breaking or chipping permanent teeth from marrow bones. If your puppy is a real aggressive chewer I would suggest that stop giving hard bones like the marrow. I myself have given it to all my dogs with never an issue, but in light of all the latest reports I now offer them only minimally. Always supervise any chew activity!! We all understand the importance of good healthy teeth, but we must not forget about our dogs breath too! Your dog should have clean, fresh breath. If you are noticing a foul smelling breath, this is a red flag and your dog should be examined by your vet immediately.

Senses – 1-year-old dogs have senses very close to their fully mature adult senses. Their sense of smell is their most refined sense. Adult dogs do not have a real sense of taste as we know it and gains most of their information about food from their sense of smell. They have a mature sense of vision, however their color vision is limited and colors may appear muted to them. Their ability to see detail is limited, however they see well in dim light are very sensitive to movement. Your dog's ability to hear is incredibly acute. Touch is the first sense the dog develops and remains an important sense. The most sensitive nerve endings are along the spine and towards the tail, and dogs show great enthusiasm in pats or extended rolls and slides on the grass. Ability to Hold Urine - 12-monthold dogs can generally hold their urine for about 7 to 8 hours. Some can hold it longer but you should give your dog the opportunity to go out at least every 7 to 8 hours if you expect them to not have an accident and if they do have an accident, it’s your fault! Agility – Most puppies that are 12 months old are very strong and coordinated with at least 90% of their adult coordination and development. They can play with excellent accuracy. Sleep – Puppies that are 1 year old have very close to adult sleeping habits and may sleep 14 – 18 hours per day. Dogs sleep more than us, but they wake more frequently than we do. How much and when they sleep

depends on the level of activity in their environment. A dog living as a pet in the home is likely to sleep more than a dog that works for a living, like a search and rescue dog or a dog working on a farm. Again, your dog needs plenty of socialization and exercise to be happy and healthy. Physical Appearance & Hair Coat – By this age, most dogs have their adult coat. They will continue to benefit from being brushed and combed daily. Your dog will need regular grooming to keep that beautiful coat long and healthy. **Puberty – Your 1 year old dog is sexually mature and if not "fixed" is capable of producing babies!! If you have not made arrangements to spay or neuter yet, please contact me asap. In any event if your dog or bitch is still intact, dog parks and off lead play should be terminated or highly, highly supervised!! I cannot underscore the importance of this.... If you have already spayed or neutered, please send me a copy of the certificate if you have not done so yet. Additionally I will address humping in an attached article that is a must read! Dog Behavior Q and A with Dr. Lore Haug, a PWD List  Mastered your Portie yet? Don’t be fooled! They still have much to learn and so do you! I learn something new everyday about the breed and about who my dogs really are. As you continue to work with your dogs, your bond and trust for one another will surely grow too!

Karma PWD’s Newsletter What your 12-24 month old Puppy Needs to Stay Healthy! Tips on Best Ways to Raise Your 1 & 2 year old Puppy’s *Keep crate training~ Try Crate Games by Susan Garret

*Groom daily *Brush teeth daily *Feed twice daily *Make sure pup gets plenty of exercise! *Provide free choice access to fresh water! *Switch toys *Don't overfeed, prevent obesity! *Give positive reinforcement for work well done *Take pup out at least every 8 hours *Make sure his collar is not too tight *Update ID tag if worn out *Schedule your puppies 1 & 2 year-old visit with your vet Your 1 year-old puppy has certain needs to stay healthy! The following is a list of recommended wellness care for a 1 year-old dog and older including tips and advise on, heartworm prevention, flea and tick control. Due to the growing concerns about vaccinations and treatment management of heartworms, flea and tick prevention, I feel compelled to direct you to Dr. Jean Dodds recommendations. I hope you take the

time to educate yourself about what options are available. This is verified as Dr. Jean Dodds' Vaccination Protocol for Dogs: CANINE VACCINATION PROTOCOL – 2011 This is what I do... Less is more! I share this information with you with the hopes that you can make the most informed decisions concerning your dogs health. HEARTWORM: Currently I use Interceptor every month year round. I find this to be the most effective and well studied medicine. TICK & FLEA PREVENTION: So, this is where there is much debate.... Vaccinate, not to vaccinate against Lyme and the growing concern about using topical agents to combat fleas and ticks. I will share a link about Lyme, fleas and ticks and you can make up your own mind about what is best... The TICK-L Links Page I have been experimenting with the use of garlic juice that I add in their food. I put a 1/8 tsp a day, every day and can be purchased from Whole Foods. I understand it takes several weeks to saturate the blood system, studies have shown that fleas and ticks are naturally repelled by garlic. That being said here is some info about Garlic in Dogs. Since Lyme is so prevalent here, I do also use K9 Advantix, which is a topical. I personally feel it is imperative to be very careful about chemicals on breeding stock. Therefore, I share 1 dose for all 3 of my Porties every other month until the first good frost and have had good success!
