About Harambee The Harambee Foundation is a local non-profit organization working to build bridges that will bring our local community in contact with the greater world. Our focus is to ensure that children, especially those in Sub-Saharan Africa, are given an equal opportunity at education, just like our children here receive. Currently we are working with local communities in the country of Tanzania to ensure that children living on the streets there are given just that chance; an opportunity to go to school. Harambee isn’t about hand-outs. What we are about is empowering a body of people with skills that are required to address community-wide issues. We do it in a way that doesn't require a never ending stream of support from generous donors, such as yourself. Instead, we are building a foundation which will allow these communities to stand on their own two feet. The goal of this 5k run is to provide them with there resources they need to build that foundation, one stone at a time.

Our History In 2005 my life was changed forever. After backpacking through the East African nations of Tanzania and Rwanda, I was taken by the number of young children living on the streets. With no access to education these children spent their days working menial jobs just to earn enough for a single daily meal. What bothered me just as much was a community who felt incapable of doing anything to improve these children’s lives. I felt there had to be some way for me to assist change. Since 2007 I have lived in the small town of Babati, Tanzania. For two years I have worked hand in hand with a committed group of local volunteers who formed their own local organization. Together what we are doing is changing the status quo. It all started with simple outreach service and has now grown to a full board center providing 30 children a warm bed to sleep in, education, medical care and 3 meals a day. -Joshua Johnston : Field Director
