“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” – Martin Luther King, Jr. Dear ISL Community, I hope that you have all had a festive holiday season and a happy new year! It is hard to believe that 2014 is here! It seems like, just yesterday, we were busy preparing for the beginning of the school year. As we return and quickly settle into the 2nd semester of the school year, our students will continue to prepare for the iLEAP and/or LEAP standardized tests. Students will be assessed at interim points, leading up to test days, to monitor their progress towards Mastery. We are confident that our students will be prepared and ask for your assistance by ensuring that your child reads daily, gets proper rest, and arrives to school on-time. Often, the first few minutes of class, set the structure for the day. To Brigham Young, “education is the power to think clearly, the power to act well in the worlds work, and the power to appreciate life.” At ISL, I believe, that increasing the academic performance of students should be approached holistically. It should take into account, behavior, the ability to think critically, the appreciation of diversity, and the keen sense for community responsibility. Students must not only show yearly academic growth on standardized tests, they must also be, respectful mindful citizens who desire to impact their community by improving it. I look forward to the continued involvement of parents in our schools during this second semester. Your support, interest, and investment are hallmarks of a successful school community. I ask parents to work with faculty and staff to strengthen school culture, improve achievement and communication, and accomplish goals. Before we know it, we will find ourselves reminiscing about this school year. I wish you all a Happy New Year and I look forward to seeing many of you and catching up. In Service, Sean Wilson CEO/Head of School
