Missouri Governor Jay Nixon (center) is pictured with Lewis County Superintendent John French and Patty Uhlmeyer from the district's Central office. Gov. Nixon took the time to pose for a picture before addressing the Highland High School students on September 18.

Rita Cox Editor rita1@lewispnj.com Governor Jay Nixon traveled to Highland High School on Thursday, Sept.18. The trip was an unexpected surprise with the Governor’s office notifying the school one day prior. Nixon came to the school to congratulate Lewis County C-1 for gaining 12 percentage points on the district’s 2014 Annual Performance Report, which is a state tool for determining district accreditation. He also had released education funding last week of around $100 million dollars in the K-12 Foundation Formula funding and another 43 million in performance funding for public colleges and universities. The Lewis County C-1 District will receive over $113,000. Upon arrival at the Lewis County Central office Gov. Nixon met with administrators and

school officials. Superintendent John French said the Governor congratulated the school on their success and listened to their concerns and ideas. Nixon then met with well rounded group of students that included, seventh graders, Joey Mitterrand (12), Reagan Smyser, Morgan Jennings and Gage Neisen from the eighth grade class, freshmen Josh French, Jace Jagger and Brooke Miller, sophomores Nathan Myers, Andrew Schultz and Jordyn Neisen, juniors Dana Flanagan, Michael Simmons and Madison TenEyck and seniors Andrew Catron, Sydney Luttrull and Gregory Chillion. Governor Nixon asked the students to each introduce themselves and tell about their interests. The student were then given the opportunity to ask the Governor questions and many of them asked very important and time sensitive questions about his vetoes, school fund-

ing, common core curriculum, budget cuts and how he make some of his decisions. Nixon was also asked if he will run for President in the 2016 election. He said he was interested in the idea, but at this time with two years left on his term as Governor, he would like to finish some of the projects that he has worked hard to accomplish. A Presidential campaign is usually very time consuming and he said he feels like he owes it to the citizens of Missouri to remain their active Governor. No questions or comments were said about the recent troubles in Ferguson, Mo., where Nixon has been in the national spotlight in recent weeks. The roundtable discussion was filled with good questions, good answers and was very casual, Nixon was very interested in the students and their activities and was very relaxed, many times smiling and laughing at witty comments the students

made. Superintendent John French and the Governor are from the same hometown of DeSoto, Mo. Nixon’s father was on the town’s school board and also mayor. Nixon told the students about his high school and some the teachers and events that had shaped his life. After meeting with the small group he addressed the entire student body and congratulated the students on their improved APR scores and encouraged them to keep up the good work. He also talked about the value of good teachers and how they will influence the future of the students. In an interview after the student assembly, Gov. Nixon talked about how impressed he was with all the students and was amazed at how well informed the group he met with. He predicted bright futures for all of them and said he looks forward to the future of Missouri.

Lewis County Regional Airport Dedicates Terminal Rita Cox Editor rita1@lewispnj.com A new terminal building at the Lewis County Regional Airport was dedicated on September 22 at the facility. The structure was built on the existing footprint of the previous building that had been in place for several years. The building was designed to be low maintenance and energy efficient with funding provided by aviation fuel taxes, profits from the sell of the old structure, which was a modular unit, an insurance settlement from damage the previous building had sustained from a wind storm in 2011, the Nichols foundation, Lewis County IDA and FFA grants, and at no cost to taxpayers. Whiston Construction was the contractor for the new terminal as board members wanted to use local contractors. The

building features a meeting room, bath room, kitchen, casual area and office space. The board is considering leasing the office space and any interested parties may contact board members Rock Schaller at (660) 391-1394 or Jerry Davis at (660) 341-0509 for more information. John Bloom, the former C.E.O. From R.E.C., returned to Lewis County after retiring last year to dedicate the new building. Bloom was one of the many people instrumental in new building becoming a reality. Bloom talked about the need for the airport in Lewis County and how he hopes it continues to be an asset for the area. Besides private airplane pilots who use the airport on a regular basis, the airport is an asset to lure businesses to the area, is a safe stop for those traveling who need to make a landing due to weather, me-

chanical or medical problems. It is also used by many businesses that provide crop applications. During the Mississippi River flood in 1993, the airport served as a base to transport people to Illinois for work, business and medical reasons. The Lewis County Regional Airport board members are working board members who

keep up with maintenance and continue to improve the facility. Rep. Craig Redmon said the airport and the new terminal are an assets to Lewis County as well as northeast Missouri and that he was proud of the new facility which is a key piece to the economic growth of the community.

Missouri. Although it cannot single-handedly solve Missouri’s rural health problems, the school has the unique potential to enhance the physician workforce. In response to the challenge, Dean Lester R. Bryant requested the creation of the MU Area Health Education Center (MU AHEC) program office in 1994 to address the shortage of physicians in rural areas of the state. The MU AHEC Rural Track Pipeline Program was then designed to encompass four distinct but related curriculum and clinical components. The sequential

programs provide students with ongoing exposure to rural medicine. As part of the Hannibal Regional Healthcare System, the Hannibal Regional Medical Group (HRMG) is a growing multi-specialty physician group continuing to expand primary and specialty care services to meet the health needs of northeast Missouri and west central Illinois residents. HRMG family and specialty physicians deliver a range of acute, chronic and preventive medical care services. In addition to diagnosing and treating illness, they also provide

preventive care, including routine checkups, healthrisk assessments, immunizations, screening tests and personalized counseling on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Hannibal Regional Medical Group

Ridgerunner Burglary

Two distinctive Fender guitars were stolen from the Ridge Runner Jamboree concert hall on September 18.

The Lewis County Sheriff ’s Department report that during the early morning hours of September 18, 2014 a burglary occurred at the Ridge Runner Jamboree concert hall in Ewing Missouri where musical equipment was stolen. Several amplifiers and sound monitors along with two distinctive Fender brand American Flag Guitars were stolen. One of the Fender Guitar is an acoustic guitar painted in an American Flag theme with the words God Bless the USA on the right side. The other Fender Guitar

is an electric model painted like an American Flag. Entry was obtained by using a crowbar type object to beat the door on the rear of the building open. A neighbor who returned home as the suspects fled the scene was able to obtain a description of the vehicle as a red or maroon small SUV believed to be a Chevrolet Blazer or Ford Explorer bearing Missouri registration. Any questions or information regarding this burglary can be directed to the Lewis County Sheriff ’s Department.

Route V will closes to traffic on Sept. 22 and will be closed for up to 45 working days for bridge deck replacement at the North Fabius River Bridge, which is located just west of Route Z between Lewis County Roads 592 (Palmetto Avenue) and 595 (Old Highway V) east of Maywood. Road closure signs are in place notifying motorists of the work. Alternate routes of travel are available over MO 6 and US 61.Replacing the deck on the 50-year-old bridge requires removal of the deck and side barriers all the way down to steel, then cleaning and replac-

ing some of the steel, and pouring concrete for the new deck which will be 22 foot wide compared to the existing 20 foot deck. L. F. Krupp Construction, Inc. of Ellisville, MO was the successful bidder on this project at $ 259,499.25. All roadwork is posted on the traveler information map. Canton Civic Club The Canton Civic Club was hosted Sept. 16 by Donna Pierce in rural Canton in her beautiful home. The meeting was brought to order by President Carolyn Winters with the Pledge to the American Flag. Fourteen members answered rollcall with “something you want to remember (or forget) about your summer”. Donna’s thought for the day was actually a slogan used by the American Cancer Society, “Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back”-celebrate those survivors of cancer, remember those who did not, and to continue fighting for a cure for the disease. She followed with information on the Relay for Life event scheduled for the weekend. The minutes were read by Secretary Mary Snyder. Treasurer, Nina Porter was absent and Maroline Long gave a treasury report. Bev Hamilton read a very nice and

appreciated “Thank You” card from Mayor Jarred Phillips re: the gardens in Central Park and our dedication to the community. T he persons responsible for this months bingo are unable to assume that role so it was suggested that they just switch months with the persons responsible for October. One person in October was unable to switch, so Penny Zahn and Mary Snyder will take over the event for this months Senior Housing Bingo game. Last months bingo went well with 1012 people attending. Discussion under new business was the problems facing the Canton Public Library re: their internet service. It was reported that at least 65 people use the library’s service every day and it is a very important service provided free to the city. We feel it is a very necessary and important service and it was

approved to donate to the library specifying it to be used for the internet service. Roberta Willis reported on the need for more volunteer drivers to deliver meals, especially on Wednesdays and Fridays. A donation was approved to donate to Heartland Resources, the persons responsible for the food bank. The annual Homecoming event is soon and discussion followed. Bev Hamilton informed the group that the lot has been reserved, even though she didn’t know she was supposed to do that until she read the minutes in the paper. We discussed some of the preparation for the event but the majority of decisions will be tabled until the meeting next month at the home ofMaroline Long. All enjoyed the refreshments and conversation that followed the meeting.

Collecting Plastic Caps The Durham Community Center and Ballpark is asking the public for help with an ongoing fundraiser project to save and turn in the plastic caps from Prairie Farms milk jugs for the Durham organization. Prairie Farms will make a donation to the Center for each cap

received. The caps carry the phrase, Caps for Your Cause. Save the entire cap and deposit them in the specified containers around the area for pickup. Locations in Durham include the Design Cube and Johnson Junction. Everyone that have saved their caps over the

summer are asked to deposit them soon as the current series of caps need to be turned in by Sept. 28, but the collection will continue through next year. The Center appreciates the public’s help on this project. For more information contact (573) 406-9395.

Letter to Editor Celebrate Liberty There are less than 40 days to election. Please make time in your schedule to attend political rallies to meet the candidates. If you can’t do that, log on to their web sites and become acquainted with them and their qualifications. Lewis County citizens will have the opportunity to vote for five county offices and two Missouri State candidates who are unopposed incumbents. In addition to our local and state candidates U. S Con-

gressman Graves is seeking another well earned term to represent our interests in Washington D.C. All the candidates should be evaluated based on their qualifications and desire to serve the citizens of Lewis County. Good government starts at the home town local level. I pray that our voices are heard loud and clear for the protection of our Liberty and to restore or confirm our trust in our representatives. When we become aware

of inconsistency in procedures or wrong doing in government, we need to dig into the matters and correct them, especially at the local level. I pray that you will meet your friends and neighbors at the ballot box: Remember tyranny begins with apathy. Celebrate Liberty with me at the ballot box. Sincerely, William Steffen LaBelle, MO

In Tiaga, Texas on September 29, 1907 Gene Autry was born.On the advice of Will Rodgers he became a singing cowboy movie star. He also composed over 200 songs including, Back In The Saddle Again, Rudolph The Rednosed Reindeer, Here Comes Santa Clause and That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine. Gene was a flight officer in the Army Air Force during World War 2 and was the only officer allowed to wear his cowboy boots with his dress uniform. Bob and Conni Blessing have returned home from a 12 day trip out west. Points of interest they enjoyed were Estes Park in Colorado. Evidence of last years flood were still evident in the area. From their suite in the Stanley Hotel-featured in the movie “The Shinning- they saw and heard the bugling of Elk. The aspen trees were just beginning to turn and residents think an early winter is coming. In Utah they enjoyed the spectacular beauty of Bryce Canyon and its brilliantly colored rock formations. In Arizona the majestic formations in Monument Valley were breath taking. They also visited Lake Powell, Sedona and Jerome where the houses hug the sides of the mountain. To top it off the scenic Grand Staircase in Escalante. The happy travelers arrived home on Conni’s birthday. Terry and Jeannie Docherty of Davenpot, Iowa and Delores Bolton visited in the home of Stan and Charlotte Miner Monday and all went for lunch at the Boat. Stan and Terry worked for years at Catipiller and have remained friends ever since. Buckley McCutchan had lunch Friday noon with Grandma Myrna Hoteling and Tim. When his Mom Tina McCutchan got off work they had dinner and a show in Quincy. Saturday they visited Hunter, Crystal Chevelle and Tucker McCutchan at their home in Canton. Alice Solter hosted an open house Sunday for family and friends of LeeAnn and Mario Arramdibe of Buffalo, NY who will be returning to their home Tuesday. Gary and Jackie Higley and family from Camp Point and Amy Higley and children were Sunday afternoon visitors of Jenny and Jerry Reid. Early Thursday morning Stan and Charlotte Miner drove to Bloomfield, Iowa for the Davis County Country and Blue Grass festival. They met friends from Texas, Rod and Linda Crouse of Fort Dodge, who returned to La Grange with the Miners. Sympathy to Lisa Gantt and family on the death of

her brother Dr. James Gantt. James was the son of Lloyd and Phyllis and grew up in La Grange. Lloyd was mayor of LaGrange at one time. Many remember Jimmy was the drum major for the LaGrange Band. Reva Joyce Gibson Gosney recently passed away. She taught at LaGrange School and also Highland and lived in LaGrange before moving. Robert Farr received word of the death of his cousin Donald Farr of St. Louis. Donald’s father, Arthur Farr, once operated a grocery store about where the casino is now located. Robert and Donald both share the same August 22 birthdate. Brad, Jordan and Caleb McDowell stopped for a brief visit with Stan and Charlotte Miner on their way to St. Louis to the ball game Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinals are defending National League Champs and have made the play offs four straight years. This outing they lost. Bessie Stambaugh had lots of company over the weekend. Saturday Mary and Russ Hill, Virginia and Mike Carpenter, Dave and Dianna Stambaugh and Doug, Brenda and Drew Mallett were supper guests. On Sunday Ed and Pat Stambaugh and Kim, Aren and Brock Schneider were lunch guests. Bert and Pat Cottrell went to Fayette, Mo., to watch their granddaughter Teddie Neil participate in a pep rally for the Fayette Eagles. A very exciting game though they were not victors. Also present for the game were Brad, Tammy, Brady, Braxton and Brayden Neil. Teddie was a flag bearer.

Maywood News

Charilyn Stalder spent several days in Quincy and enjoyed taking her grandson, Quinn, to and from his bus stop. That seemed to be his favorite part of kindergarten! While in Quincy she went with her son, Bill, to Quincy Community Theater to see the mystery “Then There Were None which was excellent. Courtney Stewart, was in the play and a long time friend. She is so talented and been in several shows at the theater. She is the granddaughter of Dorothy and Larry Gillespie and Pam Stewart is her mother. Rachel Bringer Shepherd celebrated a birthday on Friday and enjoyed dinner at the Patio that evening with Marvin and Loretta Bringer and Bobby and Dalton Shepherd. Remember the “Fall Roundup at South Union Baptist on Sunday, October 5, at 10:30. A lunch will be pro-

vided after the worship service and everyone is welcome. On Saturday evening Charilyn Stalder joined her family and friends at the Holiday Inn in Quincy for the wedding reception of Bridget Geisendorfer and Cody Browning. Pictures were shown of the wedding that was earlier in the day on the beautifully decorated lawn of Bridget’s parents, Buster and Jan Geisendorfer’s home in Monticello. They were so glad the rain predicted did not happen and it was a beautiful day. Marvin and Loretta Bringer attended the Democrat Committee Meeting in Palmyra on Tuesday evening. The bridge east of Maywood on Route V will close on Monday, September 22 for repairs. They are estimating a 45 day closure. This was called Gill’s bridge when I was growing up as the Gill’s owned a farm there. Later it became the Gilmer Johnson bridge as the road went by his place. Dr. Dorothy Gill Edmunds and her husband were buried in the Maywood Cemetery and her sisters were back here for a private service. The Gill girls father had been buried in the cemetery years ago and lived in Maywood with his parents on the farm. He left here during the depression era and was in charge of banking regulatory for the state of Washington. I was raised on the Middle Fabius and it has some interesting history. The course of the river has changed a lot since I was a kid and I remember the old metal bridge with a wooden floor. It was a popular spot for kids to throw firecrackers off of and especially “cherry bombs because with the metal bridge it sounded like a real bomb it was so loud. Each spring the buffalo fish would roll at their spawning time and the men would put them in gunny sacks and take the fish to Maywood for anyone who would like them. The fish would make a lot of noise as they were moving down the Fabius and many would end up on the bank. With no TV then it was quite a sight to watch! In the early sixties some of the Maywood men had their own exclusive fishing club. They purchased a small school bus and on Saturday nights would go to the Quinn or Nunn farms on the Fabius and fish. Some bargain price paint was purchased for the bus that was painted pink. Women were not allowed and if no fish were caught Jack Stalder, the chef, had another meal. The men in this Fabius Fishing Crew were Roy Waterman, William and Charlie Quinn, Porter Lillard, Larry Jones, Joe and Jerry Reid, Jim Nunn and Marvin Bringer. Isn’t it amazing how we made our own entertainment without a TV or computer? Sunday dinner guests of Marvin and Loretta Bringer were Rachel and Bobby Shepherd and afternoon callers were Joe and Judy Cunningham.

Rita Cox Editor rita1@lewispnj.com The Bank of Monticello held Customer Appreciation Day for their customers at their Canton facility on Sept. 18. The Bank of Monticello has a long history in the community. The Bank of Monticello was formed in February 1928. After being in business since 1904, The Monticello Trust Company closed and the Bank of Monticello was organized with $30,000 in new capital. The bank building was located directly across from the Lewis County Courthouse. The current building in Monticello was built in 1961. The Lindel Hotel was razed for the relocation of the current bank building. Two additions to the building have been made, one in 1984 and another in 2005. The Bank celebrated 50 years of business in 1978 and also celebrated 50 years

of service by Nanna Smith the same year. Miss Smith continued to work for the bank until she passed away in 1984. Ms. Smith was a Bank of Monticello employee for over 56 years, serving as President of the Bank from 1960 until her passing in 1984. According to the Missouri Division of Finance, at one time Ms. Smith was the only female bank president in the state of Missouri under state charter. The Bank expanded by adding a branch facility in Canton which opened in March 1992. Monticello Bancshares, Inc., a bank holding company, was formed in 2003 and the Bank went to a Sub-Chapter S tax status in 2004. The Bank of Monticello expanded once again with the purchase of the Heartland Bank in Kahoka in November of 2013. Bank locations and phone numbers are: 201. E. KaFayette, Monticello, (573) 76705264; 515 White Street, Canton, (573) 288-5290 and 180 S. Johnson Street, Kahoka, (660) 727-3379.

Son, Kevin Martin cut her grass visited on Wednesday. Thursday evening Erma Dee Jones attended visitation for John Eldon VanMEter. Later she phoned Madelyn (Wall) Mast in Quincy, another member of the 1947 class and had a good time rehashing old times. We also learned John Bronson, LHS graduate, class of 1949 had passed away in Oklahoma. He was the last of the children of Melvin and Mary Fann Bronson who lived in Lewistown for many years. Delbert Lay has also passed away. He lived in Illinois and was a brother of our own Lay brothers. Tuesday evening Denise Goodwin attended the Relay for Life team meeting to finale plans for the Saturday event. Wednesday evening and Thursday noon the Democratic candidates worked for tips at Primo’s and Art Cafe in Canton with

proceeds going to benefit Lewis County charities of Hadley’s Hope, a Lewis County C-1 School charity and Go Bags, a Canton R-V program. The Lewis County Relay for Life began at noon Sept. 20 and ran till midnight. Pastor Ted Middleton gave the opening prayer and remarks. The Heartland Bank and the Canton R-V band played. Other musical numbers were singers, Moran Jennings, Luke Lay and Drew Murphy. The crowd was good, events well planned and the rain held off till the event was nearly over. It takes so many volunteers to carry out a program such as this and we are thankful Lewis County Residents organize this each year. Sunday Denise and David Goodwin were invited to the home of Jimmy Goodwin and Rose Mary Jett to help Larissa Goodwin celebrate her birthday. Others present were Mary and Marvin Goodwin, Kirk Goodwin and Cameron Davis. Lewistown Park Methodist church has a new pastor who has moved into the parsonage. Pastor Elsie McNeil is quickly getting acquainted in the community and has been seen in attendance at recent social events. We welcome her to our town.

Teal The Field Event Brings Awareness

Highland and Canton Softball wearing their Teal The Field shirts.

The Highland Softball Lady Cougars faced the Canton Lady Tigers at Highland on Sept.17. Teams and supporters sold T-shirts and other items to bring awareness for ovarian cancer. Mary Jo Johnson began the Teal the Field event at Highland three years ago.

Johnson said, “We lost my mom, Barbara Cramsey, to ovarian cancer in 2011. This was at the beginning of softball season Avery’s freshman year. My girls and I wanted to find a way to honor her and raise money for ovarian cancer. With my family’s love for softball

we came up with the idea of Teal the Field. With the ok from head coach Paul Scifres and HHS administration we got the wheels turning for a fundraiser and ovarian cancer awareness night. With the help of the softball team selling T-Shirts we had our first fundraiser in 2012 and

raised $1500.00. Last year we did the same and raised $1054.00. Since my youngest daughter played Jr. High softball this year we asked them to also help with our fund raiser. We sold T-Shirts again and added awareness bracelets, and Lady cougar window de-

cals. This year we well surpassed the first two years with a total of 2700.25. This night definitely holds a special place in my heart. I have been so touched by the generosity of our school and community. We donate the money to Siteman Cancer Center in St. Louis Missouri because

this is where my mom received the majority of her chemo treatments and visited her Doctor. My mom loved the people who work in that department. Their kindness and care made it easier for my mom to go for her treatments, many of the nurses she looked forward to seeing.
