“It behooves no one to dismiss any novel idea with the statement: it can’t be done.” — William E. Boeing

One hundred years ago, William E. Boeing set out to prove it was possible to build a better airplane than any before. That drive to build something better has always guided us. From airplanes built out of canvas and wood, to satellites and space planes, we enter the next century knowing that if they say it can’t be done, we’ll find a way.

INTERVIEW WITH Christopher Davis Country Leader and President Raytheon International Inc., U.A.E. Board Member AmCham Abu Dhabi By Karim Damerje

Q. Raytheon has had a presence in the UAE for quite some time. Can you tell us a little about the company’s history here? A. In 2017 Raytheon will be celebrating its 30th year in the United Arab Emirates. I am honored to be part of a company with such a long history here. Initially, Raytheon was established in Abu Dhabi with one sole customer and a government-to-government agreement that would supply the UAE with Raytheon equipment and capabilities. Since then, we have grown our network to multiple high-profile customers. The company is proud of the partnerships we have developed in the past three decades, and we continue to look forward to finding new relationships here. As background, Raytheon (NYSE: RTN), with 2015 sales of $23 billion and 61,000 employees worldwide, is a technology and innovation leader specializing in defense, security and civil markets throughout the world. Raytheon is headquartered in Waltham, Mass.

Q. What project of Raytheon’s in the UAE are you most proud of? A. The UAE is one of Raytheon’s most prized international partnerships, and I am particularly proud of our rich history here and we are engaged in a long-term relationship. I can speak on behalf of our local team, and say that we are all extremely proud of the collaboration and intimacy that has developed with our UAE partners and customers. We provide our UAE customers with a wide range of defense and security solutions, and look to earn their trust every day.

Q. How did you get your start with Raytheon? A. Raytheon approached me in 2005 while I was working for a local entity in Abu Dhabi, and in 2006, I joined the company. People were interested in both my UAE and regional experience. Prior to being approached by Raytheon, I served as an officer at the US Embassy, Abu Dhabi, and was expanding my UAE cultural and business understanding with each new experience.

Q. As an organization that is well established here, what advice would you give to other organizations that would like to enjoy similar longevity in the UAE? A. The UAE business culture is based on personal and professional trust and collaboration. To run a long race here, one must unquestionably develop intimate, honest and open partnerships. This speaks to another required strength, which is patience. Establishing and developing trust and opportunities takes time.

Q. How do you see the importance of American business in the region? How does that influence Raytheon’s vision? A. As with any significant bilateral business collaboration, the benefits that both parties receive are multi-faceted. The American-UAE business relationship is extremely important on several levels, and it helps cultivate rich economic and political relationships in multiple layers, specifically with a company like Raytheon. I look at it from practical experience. The Raytheon relationship here has helped to nurture numerous personal relationships, contractual relationships, and of course, our strategic relationship. We see ourselves as wanting to participate in the Emirati experience, and we hope our customers and partners want to participate in the Raytheon experience. The broader pursuit of American business in the region allows us to realize these visions.

Q. What Corporate Social Responsibility activities do you participate in? A. We look to share our experience and expertise in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and cyber education. A recent example is “UAE Security Forum 2016: Bridging the Cyber-Security Talent Gap“ which was in partnership with the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington. Raytheon sponsored and hosted this event in Abu Dhabi. We also brought our “MathAlive!” concept to the UAE (and the region). This program is aimed at generating a youthful interest in math by taking everyday events, and using basic math to understand how they occur.

TAWASOL - VOL 2 2016

Q. What is the most important lesson you have had to learn as a leader? A. I have served 20 years in the US Marine Corps and have been in the corporate world for 10 years. Although military and corporate leadership do have some similarities, they can also have significant differences. However, my growing experience in both worlds leads me to believe that the key lessons in leadership is to always be truthful, to remain patient under all circumstances, to trust and to lead by example on an everyday basis.

Q. As AmCham is celebrating its 30th anniversary year, what is your favorite aspect of being a member of AmCham Abu Dhabi? Why would you recommend individuals and companies to become a member?

Being a Falcon Member helps our business as it provides us with a platform with which we can develop relationships with other US companies, both in and out of the aerospace and defense market. It allows us to grow our professional network, and subsequently helps us grow as an organization. We are able to listen to other businesses, understand their perspectives, and how they are approaching the market. This helps us to achieve diversity of thought.

Q. What do you do to relax after work? Do you have any particular hobbies or interests? A. I am an avid traveller. I also enjoy exercising and reading.

A. My favorite aspect of being a member of AmCham Abu Dhabi is meeting the many different and interesting individuals belonging to our organization. We are a tremendously diverse chamber. I enjoy hearing about the many business and cultural experiences of our members, and feel that these interactions make me a better guest here in the UAE. I would recommend individuals become members for two critical reasons: it is an excellent platform to help grow your professional network, and it affords our members the opportunity participate in a successful and diverse organization that is actively looking to engage with our UAE hosts.

Q. What important role does the AmCham Defense & Aerospace Committee play for AmCham’s membership and UAE leadership?

Call for submissions: Do you have something you would like to share with AmCham Abu Dhabi members? We accept submission of articles from members. Inclusion in the newsletter is not guaranteed. Submit information to:

A. The AmCham Defense & Aerospace Committee plays a critical role for American companies in that it serves as an excellent information-sharing forum in a very challenging business environment. It also serves as a portal for communication between the American defense companies and our UAE partners. This type of communication further develops trade and bilateral ties. A committee is only as good as the people that populate it, and this committee has extremely high quality individuals contributing to its success.

Q. What is the best part of being a Falcon Club Member of AmCham, which is the highest membership category? How does the AmCham Membership help your business? A. The Falcon Club level of membership ensures that our office is an active contributor to the AmCham Abu Dhabi mission. We derive great satisfaction in supporting a tremendous organization.

AmCham Abu Dhabi Celebrates American Independence and Memorial Day AmCham Abu Dhabi celebrated the 240th anniversary of the United States of America’s Declaration of Independence at its “4th of July” and Memorial Day Celebration on Friday, May 27, 2016. The dual celebration highlighted America’s Independence Day and U.S. Memorial Day, a day of remembrance for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Over 500 business leaders, U.A.E. and U.S. government officials, military officers, AmCham Abu Dhabi members, and the greater American community attended the celebration at The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal. The event included an official ceremony, followed by dinner and entertainment by AV Concepts. Guests of honor, U.A.E. Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development, H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan and U.S. Ambassador to the U.A.E., Barbara A. Leaf, spoke about shared values, patriotism and the importance of the U.S. - U.A.E. relationship. In his remarks, H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan said, “Thank you for asking me to celebrate with you both Independence Day and Memorial Day, events as inseparable as the friendship between the United Arab Emirates and the United States of America. American residents in the U.A.E. contribute to this special relationship. You daily strengthen the business, cultural, scientific, healthcare and energy sectors of our country. Your knowledge, talent and energy have profoundly affected our worldview. At this global crossroads, our ability to be successful hosts to other people from every other nation in the world has benefitted from a certain optimism, openness, understanding, friendliness, daring, and concern for each person as a unique individual. All of these characteristics are distinctly American. We always have good reason to celebrate your Independence Day.” He added, “Like the U.S., the U.A.E. recognizes that people united by high principles must mutually pledge to each other their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. We have now risked lives and are confronting our inevitable memorial days.” Barbara A. Leaf, U.S. Ambassador to the U.A.E. said, “I am so proud to be with you here to reflect upon the 240th year since the founding of the United States of America, and to pay tribute to the American heroes

who have safeguarded our country and the ideals for which we stand. Of course, our pursuit of this aspiration propels our country forward, but not without cost. One million Americans have given their lives since the founding of our Republic for this principle. This is why, like so many nations around the world, including the U.A.E., we observe a holiday to acknowledge our patriots.” Ambassador Leaf also highlighted the key role that AmCham Abu Dhabi members play in the U.A.E. business commnity, noting “AmCham Abu Dhabi has been at the forefront of making it possible for U.S. companies to succeed in the U.A.E. As U.S. Ambassador to the U.A.E., I have been especially privileged to serve here with a dynamic and active American citizen community to shape the diplomatic and commercial relationship between the U.S. and U.A.E. – a relationship that generates nearly $25 billion in two-way trade and supports tens of thousands of jobs in both countries.” During his welcome remarks, Robert S. Harward, Chairman of AmCham Abu Dhabi recognized the U.S. military in the audience and thanked them for their service, including guest of honor Brigadier General Daniel Orcutt and the men and women from the U.S. Military. He commented “U.S. Memorial Day is this Monday, and as a former Vice Admiral and Navy Seal, it is my honor to recognize the brave men and women who have given their lives in the service of their country.” He also acknowledged Emiratis who have made the ultimate sacrifice. As the host for the evening Sharief Fahmy, Vice Chairman of AmCham Abu Dhabi, said “Each year we celebrate our nation’s patriotism and diversity with guests from the U.S., U.A.E. and many other countries. Our values of freedom, democracy and diversity are highlighted this year in our event theme of the U.S. Presidential election.” He also thanked AmCham Abu Dhabi Executive Director Theresa F. Weber for her leadership and Board Member Elias Sayah for his contributions as Chairman of the Programs Committee. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Abu Dhabi’s leading companies, including the event’s Gold Sponsor, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, guests at the celebration
