5-Benzyloxytryptamine is a serotonin agonist that is used as a research tool for studying the function of serotonin receptors and the mechanism of action of various drugs. 5-Benzyloxytryptamine binds to serotonin receptors, which are located on the cells of the gastrointestinal tract. 5-Benzyloxytryptamine has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on contractility in guinea pig ileum. It has also been observed to activate these receptors in other tissues, such as the trigeminal nerve, which may be responsible for its analgesic effects. 5-Benzyloxytryptamine has been found to act as a partial agonist at 6-serotonin receptor subtypes 5HT1A and 5HT2A.
