COMMANDER'S CORNER Greetings Fellow Legionnaires For those of you I have not yet met, allow me to introduce myself. I am Ralph Wenzinger, Commander of the 15th District for 2018-19. My eligibility for membership in the American Legion comes from my service in the world’s greatest air power, the United States Air Force, during the war in Viet Nam. I am a member of Bakersfield Post 26 where I have served as Sgt-at-Arms for the past 5 years and on the Post Executive Committee. I am the Junior Past President of Chapter 26 of the American Legion Riders and current Alternate Area 3 Vice President for the American Legion Riders for the Department of California. My involvement with the 15th District started four years ago when I was elected District Sgt-at-Arms.

In a few days, we will celebrate Veterans Day; the day set aside to remember, honor and thank those who have served in the armed forces of our nation regardless of when and where. There will be festivities at American Legion Posts and in communities across the country. Toasts will be made to those with whom we served and to those who we didn’t. There will be the inevitable good-natured kidding about which is the best

Department President Joan Cannon, chose this year's theme of "Freedom Blooms when Veterans are Served". This year's focus is on the needs of our veterans especially to our female veterans. At the ALA's National Convention in Minneapolis - Guest speaker, Steven Peck spoke about the Women Vets on Point organization, an independent, not-for-profit program designed and informed by women veterans for women veterans in order to address critical needs and barriers to mental health care after military service. The program is funded by a consortium of Southern California foundations and brings together a team of program developers, service providers, and researchers from Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), and the United States Veterans lnitiatjve (U.S.VETS). Our female veterans are often overlooked because they do not want to ask for help or for some reason are reluctant to admit they are a veteran! For more information go to wvop@usvetsinc.org. Want to learn more about the American Legion Auxiliary "go online" to our California Department website at www.calegionaux.org for information on our programs, events, and workshops and more!
