The American Legion in San Diego County comprises 28 American Legion Posts. Among those Posts there are 8,551 members, and also 18 Auxiliary Units totaling 3,000 members, and 17 Squadrons of Sons of American Legion with 1,200 members. Each Post family has its unique profile and commitment to the American Legion's Four Pillars of service within their respective communities. Collectively, we continue to make a positive impact in building a better society by serving veterans and their families, supporting a strong National Defense, promoting Americanism and wholesome Children and Youth programs! Written in 1919, The American Legion Preamble to the Constitution represents the core values of every American Legion Post and every Legionnaire. These ideals, memorialized in 10 clauses, leave us with a strong sense of duty to execute and uphold. San Diego’s District 22 is no exception. We strive to live by these words with every program, fundraiser and activity we embrace. We hope to instill in friends, family and fellow veterans our dedication to the spirit of the American Legion by action and not just words. Thinking globally but acting on the local level is what has driven our great organization for almost a century; in doing so, we’ve built synergies that have enabled us to achieve remarkable accomplishments.

Well, Hello There! Please allow me to introduce myself if we haven’t met yet.

My name is Maureen Giacalone, but everyone just calls me “Moe” because they can’t pronounce my last name!! For those who don’t know me, I have been a member of Unit 460 since 2006, and at 460 I’ve held the offices of President, 1st and 2nd Vice President, many, many chairs, and I am currently Secretary and Historian. In the District, I started out as Sergeant-At-Arms, and then served as Poppy Chair and National Security Chair before moving up the chairs. I am now proudly serving as your President. My father was a Veteran and used to take our family to the Post in the town where I grew up. I have two sons, one who joined the Army right after 9/11, and my oldest son is serving in the Air Force. So serving our Military and Veterans is very dear to my heart. Our theme this year is “Real Heroes wear dog tags, not capes,” our District is called “The Mighty 22nd” and Department of California President Loretta Marsh is encouraging us all to have fun with her theme, dressing up as our special super heroes, all in service for our Veterans, Active Duty Military and their families. I see there are lots of events planned by our Mighty 22nd District, and I can’t wait to hear all the results. Keep up what you’re doing, and bring in those new members, as growing our membership is so important for the life of the American Legion. Encourage your new members to attend our workshops, and I hope to see them at our District meetings.
