Work starts on a range of Belfast commercial projects
orthern Ireland construction activity has remained consistent throughout September with a number of large projects across the sectors expected to move stage in the final quarter of the year. The commercial sector has seen a good range of projects start on-site recently. Phase 5 of the Quays Shopping Centre extension in Newry is underway with O’Hare and McGovern constructing. This work will see the creation of a stand-alone retail scheme featuring six retail units and three restaurants at a cost in the region of £20million. Main contractor Tracey Brothers is progressing work for the Henderson Group on a £10million storage and distribution warehouse, offices and staff welfare facilities in Mallusk, County Antrim. O’Hare & McGovern has also started works on the construction of a new office building close to Central Station in Belfast for US firm Allstate. Michael Nugent Limited has been awarded the mechanical and electrical installations on this £13million project. Construction work has also started on the £9.3million Hampton by Hilton hotel in Belfast. Works are being undertaken by MSM Contracts Limited. Bennett Construction Limited is poised to start work on a £9million retail extension at the Primark store at Bank Buildings in Belfast as soon as demolition works are completed. In addition, plans have been submitted for a £2.8million office building at Oyster House, Belfast. Also in the city, Raidio Failte TEO is planning to build a £1.2million recording studio with visitor facilities. In the hotel and leisure sector, planning approval has
been issued for a £3million 24-bed boutique hotel and restaurant in L’Derry. In the education Sector, the tendering procedure has started for the construction of a £6.2million 21-class based primary school in Dunmurry, County Antrim for the Holy Evangelist Primary School. An on-site start date has been set for April 2017. Meanwhile Newbridge Integrated College in Loughbrickland, County Down is set for a new sports hall facility and classroom provision in a £2.4million development. QMAC Construction will be starting work in October on the £3.8million sports hall and classroom accommodation at Erne Integrated College in Enniskillen. The ABC Council is planning a new £25million sports/leisure facility at South Lake, Craigavon, County Armagh. Looking to the residential Sector, projects at a pre-planning stage include 280-300 new houses in Drumahoe, County L’Derry. Braidwater Limited is behind this £18million proposal. Back in Belfast, French company Stargime is proposing a £10 million office building at Graham House, Albert Square.
