Afterschool Programs

PASSage/ASES After School Middle school students will have an opportunity to strengthen social skills, improve confidence, problem solving and decision making abilities, elevate physical and academic performance, and most of all, meet new friends and have fun! Participants will engage in a variety of exciting and challenging activities such as academic enrichment, sports, visual and performing arts, robotics, multi-cultural activities, life skills education, special events, trips and much more! Daily attendance is expected; however, allowances can be made for excused absences. For more information call 808-5611.

Teen Scene • Ages 12-17

Hang with your friends and with some cool adults this summer. Polish your skills in some old and new games too, work off some energy (or some calories), demonstrate your talents (dancing, singing, crafts), laugh a lot, help plan the activities, and discover something new about yourself and others. The Teen Scene is a structured and supervised recreation program. Community youth (6th grade+) can participate in a variety of sports, games, tournaments, guest speakers, and special events. Activity Guide Section Students

Today Achieving Results for Tomorrow

Sacramento START is a “FREE” afterschool program for Kindergarten through 6th Grade students, with a focus on providing academic support and recreational activities in a safe and caring environment. Programs are available at 31 schools in three school districts: Robla Unified, Sacramento City Unified and Twin Rivers Unified. To ensure consistency in learning, students attend Sacramento START at least three hours a day, five days a week during the school year. The Recreation Aide will provide activities and assistance for groups of up to 20 elementary school students in homework, fitness, nutrition and special events by selecting a variety of age-appropriate activities at a school site. Monday – Friday Morning Program: 6:00 – 9:00am / Afternoon Program: 1:00 – 6:30 pm (Times may vary by Site) Pay Rate: $10.54 per hour Application Process Please submit completed application packet to the Sacraemnto START office, 5735 47th Avenue, Sacramento, CA 95824. Youth Employment Programs

The following programs are paid work experiences for young people. If you are interested in these programs, you must apply and go through the selection process. Landscape & Learning (L&L)

Designed for youth ages 14-17 years who reside within the city limits of the city of Sacramento and are eligible for a work permit. Youth work directly in community parks and green spaces weeding, pruning and providing general clean up and landscape maintenance. All youth participating in this program receive specialized training. Youth are selected through an application and interview process. Applications are available during specific application periods at the Belle Cooledge CC, 5699 S. Land Park Dr. Spaces are limited. Work Innovation & Opportunity Act Youth Services (WIOA)

Partners with local government, private business, hospital environments and the retail industry to deliver a strengths-based youth employment program. Participants receive training in pre-employment skills such as resume writing, employer expectations, service learning, and navigating college campuses. After training is complete, participants are placed in a paid work experience. Applicants must live within the city limits of Sacramento, be between the ages of 16-19, be on track to graduate high school by December 2016, be eligible for a work permit and meet income requirements. Spaces are limited. Youth are selected through an application and interview process. Applications are available at the Belle Cooledge CC, 5699 S. Prime Time Teen

Provides fun, interactive work readiness training for young people between the ages of 13-17. Participants gain skills in job searching, resume development, completing job applications, interviewing, financial literacy, communication, leadership and community service. All participants who meet attendance goals and participate in a youth-led community service project will receive a $200 stipend. (Participants must have a signed copy of their social security card on file to receive stipend). Program is free. Spaces are limited. Teen Services

THE 28TH & B SKATEPARK operates seven days a week: Monday-Friday

4:00-9:00pm / Saturday and Sunday 12:00-9:00pm. Skaters are invited to ollie and grind indoor street course of a bowl, quarter pipes, fun boxes, and grind rails. All sessions are supervised. Participants under 18 are required to wear a helmet. Knee and elbow pads are strongly encouraged but not required. A limited number of helmets and pads are available to rent for $1 per session. Participants are allowed to ride scooters and roller skates at the skate park. No bikes allowed. We are located at Sutter’s Landing Regional Park at 28th and B Streets (over the railroad tracks). Fee: $3 per session

WINTER SKATE CAMP Ages: 5-18 • All levels • Fee: $120 / 10:00am-1:00pm / December 28 - January 1st Experienced skate instructors and staff teach basic skateboard fundamentals as well as more technical skills for advanced skaters. This is a great opportunity for the youth of Sacramento to meet other skaters from the region and acquire some tricks at the same time. Fee includes skate instruction, snack, and t-shirt. Goalball

Goalball is a challenging team sport developed for people who are blind or visually impaired. It promotes exercise, team spirit, community involvement and social interaction. Goalball is played in teams of three on a volleyball-sized court with raised boundary and information lines. Fall program starts in October with two scheduled practice each month until February. Check the website for dates soon.

Handcycling and Tandem Cycling

Fall dates to be announced soon. Visit the cycling section on our webpage. All rides vary in distance and pace according to riders’ abilities.

Quad Rugby

Wheelchair or Quad Rugby is a fast-paced and competitive sport for individuals with physical disabilities that affect all four extremities. Players use special “Rugby Wheelchairs” to play the sport. These chairs are very maneuverable and can take a hit or two. Rugby players must be able to push their own wheelchairs. Introduction and practices are usually scheduled for Tuesdays 6:00-8:00pm. Dogwood Park – 3075 Macon Drive, North Natomas This new 3.1-acre neighborhood park includes landscaping, children’s Native American themed playground with shade canopy, tike track, group picnic area with shade structure, picnic tables, and grill, two half basketball courts, two horseshoe courts, and multi-purpose turf area. Valley Oak Park – 2780 Mabry Drive, North Natomas This new 9.6 acre community park includes a children’s horse ranch themed tot lot and adventure area, with shade canopies, large stallion water spray area, youth bank shot court, two turf volleyball courts, two bantam soccer fields, fitness stations, bicycle and jogging trail, two lighted tennis courts, a ball wall, half basketball court, and a 0.5 acre small and 2-acre large dog parks. Wild Rose Park – 5200 Kanakee Drive, North Natomas This new 9.6 acre community park includes a nature themed children’s tot lot and adventure area with shade canopies, water spray area, group picnic area with shade structure, individual picnic areas, community garden, two half basketball courts, a baseball field, open turf area, seating area, bicycle and jogging trail. Colonial Park – 3515 19th Avenue, Fruitridge Broadway Improvements to the existing park will include replacing the existing playground equipment, surfacing, benches, replacing damaged concrete flatwork, installing concrete sidewalk, new basketball posts and backboard, restriping, soccer goals, park name sign, baseball backstop and bleacher board replacement, and tree planting. Anticipated completion late spring 2015. McKinley Park – 601 Alhambra Blvd, East Sacramento Improvements to the existing park will include adding a metal shade structure over the existing group picnic area next to the playground. Other improvements will include turf sod and trees around the playground and tree planting. Anticipated completion by summer 2015. Peregrine Park - 3031 Guadalajara Way, North Natomas Improvements to this existing park will include renovation of the turf, removal of existing no-mow fescue and replace with low water use landscaping, and the removal and replacement of the existing playground shade structure. Anticipated completion in August 2015. Lawrence Park – 5130 McGlashen St., Fruitridge Broadway Improvements to the existing park will include replacing the existing playground equipment and surfacing, benches, tables, basketball court sealcoat and striping, soccer goals, park name sign, baseball backstop and bleacher board replacement, and tree planting. Natomas Regional Park – 2501 New Market Dr., North Natomas Improvements to the existing regional park will include a Farmer’s Market with shade structures, and new 109 space parking lot. There will be a second project to install two additional baseball fields, walkways, a concrete stage, site furniture and landscape planting. Anticipated completion in late fall 2015. Reichmuth Park – 6135 Gloria Dr., Land Park Area Improvements to the existing park will include renovation of the existing adventure area and tot lot, a new water spray area, and a 9-hole disc golf course. Anticipated completion in late fall 2015. Del Paso Regional Park – 3565 Auburn Blvd., Arden Arcade Improvements to this existing park will include a widening and paving the existing horse trail as an 8’ multi-use trail at the east end of Park Road and extending west ¼ mi. along Arcade Creek. Other improvements include accessible picnic tables, trash receptacles, informational signage and kiosk. Anticipated completion in late fall 2015. Westhampton Park – 5401 Westhampton Dr., North Natomas Improvements to the existing park will include replacing the existing playground equipment, except climbing boulders and swings, removal of existing no-mow fescue and replace with low water use landscaping, and additional tree planting. Hold Harmless Agreement for Participation in City of Sacramento Programs Hold Harmless Agreement: I understand that serious accidents occasionally occur during recreation programs. Knowing the risk and in consideration of being permitted to participate in City of Sacramento recreation programs, I agree to assume all risks connected therewith. I agree to release and discharge in advance the City of Sacramento, its officers, employees and agents from any and all liability for personal injury, shall remain in effect until revoked in writing.
