I am a city boy from Singapore, and stepping off the train at the sleepy seaside town of Arbroath, I felt I had to laugh. It seemed like an exercise in cultural displacement.

eyes of the portraits and the statues, and tried not to recall Hammer Horror movies. It wasn’t hard to imagine myself living there a hundred years ago, so I decided to record the momentary illusion of myself as the lord of the manor. On went the kilt and sporran, out came the video recorder. I went for a walk with the dogs, but the locals didn’t even bat an eyelid - Scotland was playing in the World Cup at the time and everybody else had their kilt on. Ming Wong 1998

Anyone who is fortunate enough to lay eyes upon Hospitalfield will undoubtedly require several days to satisfy the need to explore the beautiful house, enclosed gardens and surroundings.

Galerie Pachemine Montreal, Canada

After the excitement of the first few days, I began making use of the ‘Patrick Studio’ which was allocated to me.

Galeria Imagiar Quito, Equador

A small painting of the studio space on a piece of primed wood was one of my very first works. I then moved outdoors and painted a view of Hospital-field House from within the enclosed garden. My rediscovery in painting from observation during these carefree weeks in Arbroath became the key for the

months to follow. Once I returned to Montreal. I continued to work using my own surroundings as subject 1995

pub in downtown Montreal . Many of the remarkable events during my stay at Hospitalfield have only become clearer with the passing of time. Of the many beautiful places I visited and the many wonderful; people I met in Scotland, I feel that the most remarkable thing of all is my regained awareness and appreciation for my immediate surroundings and Relations in my life. ROSL ARTS Supporting young artists and musicians Over the past fifty years ROSL ARTS has developed an impressive portfolio of arts activities and projects devoted to the career development of talented young professional artists and musicians from the UK and the Commonwealth, as well as presenting readings and literary events at its central London venue.

VISUAL ARTS Through the ROSL Annual Exhibition, which began in 1984, and our touring solo and group exhibition programme, we have created a unique showcase which has brought together work by young British artists such as Eileen Cooper, Tracey Emin, Peter Howson and Tai Shan Schierenberg with their contemporaries from all over the Commonwealth. Thanks to the Annual Exhibition many artists from overseas have exhibited in the UK for the first time. We provide travel scholarships, which give artists the opportunity to develop their work in exciting new ways. We also commission work from young artists in ceramics and glass, graphic designers and portrait artists. In 2000 Annual Exhibition will concentrate on the winners of ROSL Travel Scholarships. The Scholars Exhibition 2000 features three artists Pindaro Cabrera, Todd Narbey and Ming Wong following residencies in 1998 and 1999 supported by ROSL ARTS at the Patrick Allan Fraser Foundation, Hospitalfield in Arbroath, Scotland. From 2001 onwards the Annual Exhibition will be a group show for five Commonwealth artists, who will be selected from five different Commonwealth countries each year: one each from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australasia/South Pacific and Europe. Selected artists are also awarded a travel scholarship to make a study visit to a country other than their country of origin.
