PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

INTRODUCTION Graphic design is a creative process, one most often involving a client and a designer, and traditionally completed in conjunction with producers of form (printers, sign makers, etc.). In the 21st century, however, graphic design may be applied directly to websites, eliminating the need for an intermediary. Graphic design is undertaken to convey a specific message (or messages) to a targeted audience, usually from the client, known as the ‘brief’. The term “graphic design” can also refer to a number of artistic and professional disciplines that focus on visual communication and presentation. The term “graphic design” can also refer.

PLACEMENT

AUSTRALIA The placement that I undertook in Australia, game me a chance to not only go and work in a graphic design studio for 3 months, but also see if there was any difference between design in the UK and Australia. For the most part I was asked to help out on different designs that they had coming in from their clients these would range from posters to brochures to sourcing images for websites that they were working on. From this I got an enormous amount of knowledge and experience of what real world graphic design is all about, how it goes from the studio off to print to the finished travel brochure and all the processes in-between. Also I learnt the shear speed of which work has to be produced and sent off from studio to client can be a matte of hours in some cases.

PLACEMENT

IN THE UK Working at WAA was a valuable experience. We collaborated with the creative team of 5 designers & freelancers. We had the chance to work on various live project briefs. We had to be proactive, learn and absorb information fast. During the placement we worked on a brief from National Express. We created one campaign each & have been working on promoting the Term Plus card for 16-18 years olds. For young students & parents seeking independence from mums & dads taxi.

I did a two-month internship at Burgopak Ltd, a packaging design company based in London Bridge, London. I worked under Dane Whitehurst, Creative Director, on various projects ranging from chewing gum packaging to video display units. The opportunity introduced me to new ways of working, the fast pace of design and how to work in a studio environment. The work I did there opened my eyes to the world of packaging and all it had to offer. My knowledge of software improved and I left my internship feeling more comfortable as a designer. The experience and positive feedback has led me to the desire to specialise in packaging design and applied graphics.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

&

MOBILITY SERVICE

As part of second year Graphic Design at Coventry University we undertake a ‘Professional Practice’ module. In essence live briefs, real clients and as real as freelance design gets in the confines of an academic practice. Our team designed the brand and starting media for a Romanian humanitarian project, which came to be named as The PAD Project. Their aim, to use cargo containers as a shell to expand upon to create educational ‘pads’ to help combat a lack of special needs education and awareness.

My experience has proven so far to be a solid foundation for my future development as a practitioner. The projects have expected deliverables, yet in terms of used techniques and personal approach, we I have been given the needed freedom to explore any fields of interest, which helps me expand my general and professional knowledge........

For the past few years, I have had a fantastic time at Coventry University. It has taught and encouraged me to become more self-sufficient and productive with my time. I have overcome hurdles that I had not thought was possible and exceeded most of the expectations I had of myself. With my final year approaching, I intend to use this as a stepping stone for even greater things to come.........
