Hello and welcome to the City of Pleasanton Summer 2018 Activities Guide!

Community Services Update . . . . . . . . . . . . 3

As Pleasanton’s City Manager, I am tasked with oversight of the city organization, which includes addressing the needs of our community, ensuring sensible and responsible fiscal policies, and executing the vision and policies of the Mayor and City Council. Today I share some exciting news about a big change to the organization which will impact everyone who enjoys the City’s recreation, arts, and library programs. Beginning July 1 of this year, the Library Services and Community Services departments will be combined into the new Library and Recreation Department, led by current Director of Library Services, Heidi Murphy.

Facilities/Community Services Staff . . . . . . 4

Over the past year, a team of City staff members including myself, Heidi Murphy, and former Director of Community Services Susan Andrade-Wax worked to create a new organizational structure that incorporates all aspects of both departments into a way that we believe best serves you. The resulting plan identified three high-level areas around which the department’s services will be managed:

Recreation and Human Services, which will include oversight of the Senior Center, Gingerbread Preschool and the City’s aquatics and sports programs
Library and Civic Arts, which will oversee the City’s Arts programs at the Firehouse Arts Center, Amador Theater, and library services
Business and Facilities Management, which will operate the department’s administrative services, marketing, and other special projects.

While other cities go through similar consolidations due to budgetary constraints, our goal with this integration is to bring together two closely aligned departments and use their combined resources and talent to find new ways to bring great programs to our community. A great deal of strategy and thought has been put into this plan, ensuring that best practices were followed and the transition is as smooth as possible. As the consolidation unfolds throughout the summer and in the coming years, we acknowledge there may be challenges and bumps along the way; change is a process, and it’s almost never easy. We believe the new Library and Recreation Department will provide residents and community members with new, enhanced programs and services in ways not previously possible. For additional information about the integration process or the new department, please contact Director of Library and Recreation, Heidi Murphy, at hmurphy@cityofpleasantonca.gov. Our Zumba Toning certified instructor uses dynamic resistance training resulting in muscle strength, increased bone density, and improved mobility, posture and coordination.

Beginners will establish a foundation in Tai Chi fundamentals by learning the early moves of a Tai Chi set. Intermediate and advanced students will build on the foundation learned in the beginners class by exploring the depths of the fundamentals as well as learning additional moves.
