Ready for more positive habits that will drive you to higher levels of success, both personally and professionally? Here are 40 that you can use starting tomorrow to create the best and most effective morning routine for you based on the areas you want to work on most: your mind, body, soul, or business.

Your Mind Start your morning in a positive mindset and the rest of your day will follow suit. These 10 habits can help you make that happen:

#1: Write ‘Morning Pages’ Begin your morning handwriting three pages about whatever is on your mind, as suggested by Julia Cameron, and you’ll enjoy greater clarity, focus, and creativity the rest of the dayi. Hate writing by hand? You can use a tool like 750words.com instead.

#2: Come up with 10 Ideas Make your brain “sweat” first thing in the morning and you’ll build your creative muscles, possibly even coming up with that million-dollar idea or worldchanging invention. Evernote is a great tool to capture all of these ideas so that you can refer back to them whenever you want.

#3: Read a Chapter of a Book Reading has a way of reducing your stress, improving your thought process, and inspiring you to do more. Or you can use something like Audible.com to listen to a chapter of your favorite book.

#4: Get Up Early By choosing to not sleep in, like Sir Richard Branson who gets up at 5 AM ii, you have access to the most quiet and peaceful hours of the day, allowing your mind to operate fully and without distractions.

#5: Meditate Clearing your mind of your past and your future keeps it in the present—the one and only point in time that you actually have control over. Here’s a link to a great 10-minute guided “morning meditation” on YouTube.

#6: Create a Plan Getting your to-do list out of your mind and down on paper frees you to think about the tasks at hand, decluttering your mind in the process. Tip: Try keeping it as simple as possible by using an index card or Post-it note (the small size will force you to only put the most important tasks on there).

#7: “Spend Time” With Positive People Reading positive people’s books, blog posts, or emails; listening to their podcasts; or watching their videos is a great way to start your morning in the right mindset—a positive mindset.

#8: Brainstorm Using this same technique as Paul Shapiro, director of search at Catalyst/GroupM, is one way to get your mind open to all of the possibilities that exist before youiii. I love using a mindmap for my brainstorms. Check out MindMeister.com for an awesome free tool.

#9: Stay Away From Your Email Avoiding other people’s requests for your time and energy after you first awake allows you to start your day focused on you and your needs, not them and theirs.

#10: Listen to Your Favorite Radio Show or Podcast Tuning in to your favorite radio program, like Margaret Thatcher, former U.K. prime minister who enjoys a radio farming show, gets your mind excited about something that you love.

Your Body Get your energy flowing and start your body off on a good foot with these 10 healthy kick-starters:

#11: Engage in Cardiovascular Exercise Get your heart going first thing in the morning and you’ll feel more energetic all day long. You could go for a quick jog or do something as simple as 30-seconds of jumping jacks.

#12: Do Yoga Yoga not only gets you in better physical shape, but it also helps center you as your mind and body become one.

Here’s a great 5-minute morning yoga routine with Tara Stiles.

#13: Drink a Glass of Water Rehydrate your cells and organs so they function as effectively and efficiently as possible. One of my friends brings a frozen bottle of water into his bedroom at night and drinks it first thing in the morning when he wakes up. He loves it because it’s still cold and it wakes him up.

#14: Eat a Healthy Breakfast Replenish some of the vitamins and minerals your body needs to give you ample energy to get through your day. Really want to get the most out of this? Prepare it the night before so it’s ready in the morning. I have the same exact thing everyday that I’m not travelling to make it easy.

#15: Lift Some Weights Start your morning making yourself stronger and nothing the day throws your way is impossible. Nothing. No weights? No problem! Try the ‘7 Minute Workout’. It’s a scientifically proveniv way to get a quick full-body workout in.

#16: Play a Sport Engaging in an activity you enjoy first thing in the morning, like Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue who plays an hour of tennis, puts a smile on your face that lasts all day longv.

#17: Take a Walk Fresh air and a little bit of light exercise are a great low-impact ways to get in shape and feel lighter both physically and emotionally.

#18: Brush and Floss Your Teeth Not only is brushing and flossing good for your teeth and gums, but it also reinforces the formation of positive habits, which makes it a great start to any day.

#19: Take a Cold Bath Immersing yourself in cold water for a few minutes, like famous motivational speaker Tony Robbins does, helps “reset your nervous system and relieve inflammationvi. Or you can just jump in a cold shower. A 2007 study vii found that cold showers can help treat depression symptoms, and if used on a routine basis, may be more beneficial than prescription medications. The reason for this, in scientific terms, is due to the stimulation of the dopaminergic transmission in the mesocorticolimbic and nigrostriatal pathway viii.

#20: Dance Music, whether hip hop, R&B, or classical, has a way of getting into every cell in your body, motivating and inspiring you to do amazing things.

Your Soul If it’s your soul that could use a little AM reinforcement, these 10 activities will help make it stronger and more resilient:

#21: Pray Asking for guidance and help as you go about your day reminds you of what matters most and what it is you seek to find. Don’t forget, you don’t have to be religious to pray. Benjamin Franklin used to ask himself one simple question every morning ix: “What good shall I do this day?”

#22: Write a Gratitude List When you focus on the things you are grateful for, it opens you to the source of all those things that came into your life. Here are the 13 biggest things that I’ve gotten from writing a 1,000+ gratitude lists over the last few years…

#23: Write a Thank You Note to Someone Telling someone that you appreciate them and their actions grounds you, making you more humble and gracious for the people in your life. Or you can just shoot them a text with something as simple as “Just wanted to let you know that YOU ARE AWESOME!” You will be amazed at how much a simple gesture like that can mean to someone.

#24: Say Positive Affirmations Out Loud Focus on the positive things in your life and you will attract even more positivity all day long. Here’s a great list of 8 affirmations you can say in the morning.

#25: Visit a Spiritual App or Web Page Spiritual passages are inspiring and motivating, pushing you towards becoming the person you want to be.

#26: Talk to Someone You Trust When your soul feels a little heavy, sharing your concerns is a great way to lighten the load.

#27: Spend Time with a Loved One Quality time with those you love has a way of satisfying you spiritually, reconnecting you with those who matter most.

#28: Show Appreciation Telling or showing the people in your life how much they are appreciated has a way of making you both feel better about the relationship you share.

#29: Imagine That Today Is Your Last Day on Earth By doing what Steve Jobs did, asking yourself if you’d want to do what you’re doing today if it was your last day on earth, you’ll more easily recognize whether things have to change for your soul to be more satisfied x.

#30: Do Something Creative Get in touch with your innermost desires by drawing, doing pottery, or otherwise engaging in a craft that lets you express yourself fully.

Your Business Establishing positive morning habits can help your business too. Here are 10 to consider:

#31: Work on your MIT (Most Important Task) xi By working on the one most important thing you want to get done for the day, your feeling of accomplishment once it is complete will help carry you all day through.

#32: Write Writing first thing in the morning starts your day productively, and gets your creative juices flowing! Bestselling author Stephen King is very deliberate about writing each morning xii: “There are certain things I do if I sit down to write,” he said. “I have a glass of water or a cup of tea. There’s a certain time I sit down, from 8:00 to 8:30, somewhere within that half hour every morning, I have my vitamin pill and my music, sit in the same seat, and the papers are all arranged in the same places. The cumulative purpose of doing these things the same way every day seems to be a way of saying to the mind, you’re going to be

dreaming soon.”

#37: Focus on Your Posture It may sound simple, but if you spend your morning routine hunched over while writing your goals or engaging in social media, not only could it potentially cause you back problems, but it could lower your confidence levels tooxiv.

#38: Read Bookmarked Articles or Saved Emails You know all of those articles that you’ve bookmarked or emails you’ve saved to read at a later point? Now is a great time to go through them and finally decide to delete or act on them. Pocket is a great tool for this.
