Grocer helps 13-year-old boy BLAIR EDWARDS KOURIER-STANDARD Employees and shoppers gathered at the front of Laura’s Independent Grocer to meet Justin Vachon on Thursday night, Oct. 28. Store owner Laura Dubois presented the 13-year-old Bridlewood boy with a $20,000 cheque to pay for the conversion of his family’s van to make it wheelchair accessible. Justin has Pelizaeus-Merzbacher syn-
drome, a rare disorder of the central nervous system causing a delay in co-ordination, motor abilities and intellectual function. Maryse Derouin, the boy’s mother, said the adjustments to the van make it much easier for the family to travel to the grocery store, the bank and on other errands. “I literally would say, ‘I’m just going to stay home until someone can stay with him,’” said Derouin. blair.edwards@metroland.com
