Call for speakers: second TEDx Kanata coming Adam Kveton
TEDx Kanata organizers are on the lookout for people with big ideas to be part of their next speaking event. Visionaries, creators and those in between can now pitch their big ideas for a chance to speak at the second TEDx Kanata event, taking place in late March 2016. The event, a licensed but independent version of the famous TED Talks which feature “ideas worth spreading,” looks to grow on the success of last year’s inaugural TEDx Kanata which included local business leaders, tech visionaries and a Canadian astronaut speaking on everything from how quantum mechanics and space flight affects people’s day-to-day life, and how tech companies’ next big challenge is to understand art. INSPIRATION
The TEDx Kanata organizers, headed by Kanata North Business Improvement Area executive director Jenna Sudds, hope to find an equally inspirational group of eight
individuals to talk in 2016. But this time, the group has opened up a nomination process inviting the public to suggest people they know or themselves as potential presenters. “This is our second time around and there is so much more interest this time, and as well, more time on our side,” said Sudds. Last year, given a shorter timeframe to put together the event, the TEDx Kanata committee identified and approached speakers themselves, securing eight. Organizers are looking for another eight this year whose big ideas might relate to the breaking barriers theme. “It’s bringing to the stage those ideas, those stories that can inspire, can motivate and can encourage people to push past their own barriers. “So truthfully the range of topics is a gamut,” said Sudds. Given the interest potential speakers expressed for last year’s event, organizers expect many nominations, she said. In addition to the new nomination process, the event is doubling its capacity for its second go-
around, bumping ticket numbers from 100 to 200. However, tickets remain available only to those apply and are offered the chance to purchase them. “I think there is a lot of value in making sure that you get the right people in the room, so that there is meaningful conversation and maybe these ideas can come to action through the conversation,” said Sudds. Everyone will get a chance to see what goes on as, like all TED Talks events, the TEDx Kanata presentations will be made available on the TED Talks YouTube channel. Organizers are also trying to broaden the community involved with the event by starting a stage building competition, which will be further defined in September, but will allow artists, designers and local students the chance to pitch and build their stage design. Speakers can be nominated until Aug. 30, and will include an audition stage in October for those who are chosen to continue on through the process. Nomination forms can be found at www.tedxkanata.com/speakers.
TEDx Kanata is on the lookout for another eight speakers to wow audiences at their second event, scheduled for the end of March 2016.
