Pheasant Hunting Tips According to a DNR wildlife research biologist, pheasants follow a schedule as routine as your daily commute to and from work. Understanding the pheasant’s daily movements can increase your odds of flushing a rooster. “Pheasants start their day before sunrise at roost sites, usually in areas of short- to medium-height grass or weeds, where they spend the night.” That’s the word from Dick Kimmel, research biologist at the DNR Farmland Wildlife Research and Populations Station at Madelia. Kimmel says that at first light, pheasants head for roadsides or similar areas where they can find gravel or grit. Pheasants usually begin feeding around 8 a.m. When shooting hours begin an hour later, the birds are still feeding, often in grain fields while cautiously making their way toward safe cover. “Look for the edges of picked cornfields,” says Kimmel, who regularly hunts southwestern Minnesota with his English setter, Banjo. By mid-morning, pheasants have left the fields for the densest, thickest cover they can find, such as a standing

corn, federal Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) fields, brush patches, wetlands, or native grasses. Kimmel says the birds will “hunker down here for the day until late afternoon.” It’s next to impossible for small hunting groups of two to three hunters to work large fields of standing corn. Pheasants often run to avoid predators, a response that frustrates dogs and hunters working corn, soybean, and alfalfa fields. Groups of two or three hunters usually have better success working grass fields, field edges, or fencerows. Other likely spots during midday are ditch banks and deep into marshes. Remember: The nastier the weather, the deeper into cover the pheasant will go. But eventually, pheasants have to eat again. During the late afternoon, the birds move from their loafing spots back to the feeding areas. As in the morning, birds now are easier to spot from a distance and are more accessible to hunters. “That’s why the first and last shooting hours are consistently the best times to hunt pheas-
ants,” Kimmel adds.

New Social Studies Curriculum This summer, High School Social Studies teachers Joy Whitbred and Patty Ennis met with Mr. Schultz and Mr. Nelson to share with them new Social Studies curriculum that they were interested in purchasing called History Alive! In order to use the curriculum effectively, students needed
to have access to computers in the classroom. Fortunately, Mr. Schultz agreed that the purchase of an Ipad cart would be most cost-effective and beneficial for students. With help from Mora Chevrolet’s Test Drive for Education event, Mrs. Ennis and Mrs. Whitbred have been sharing the first Ipad lab in the
district, bringing History Alive to Sophomore and 7th grade American History classes. This new interactive way of teaching Social Studies allows students to be engaged with different hands-on activities and strategies while learning about our history with the help of the Ipad.

Fifth-graders Logan P., Sean H., Riley R. and Mackenzie T. practice the autoharp in fifthgrade music class. The autoharp is a musical string instrument having a series of chord bars attached to dampers, which, when depressed, mute all of the strings other than those that form the desired chord. Each student will perform a song accompaniment of their choice for the students in their class.

THANK YOU The family of Derek Rootkie would like to publicly thank everyone who supported us during the last seven months. We could not ask for better family, friends and community. From the beginning your support has been there for us when we needed it. The number 56 was proudly displayed as a sign of strength and support. Thank you to Derek’s classmates who organized the “Stay Strong” t-shirts and the Fun Run and to the Rush City youth who organized the dodgeball tournament. As young adults, you pulled together during a difficult time to show support for Derek. Thank you to all the businesses and individuals who donated to and attended Derek’s benefit back in August. The generosity of this area is amazing and we are so grateful. Throughout Derek’s difficult journey, this community has prayed for Derek and supported our family. Thank you all for being there when we had to say our goodbyes to Derek. What a tribute to a special young man! Special thanks to the football team for being there for your teammate; we know it wasn’t easy and we are so proud of you. Please remember that Derek lives on in all of us. Every time you smile, help someone out, do a good deed, or “pay it forward,” Derek is right there beside you. The family of Derek Rootkie

THANK YOU Thank you everyone including family, friends and neighbors for all your loving support during my recent stay at Abbott Hospital and St. Clare’s Rehab Center and since I returned home; whether it was prayers on my behalf, visits, rides, phone calls, cards, gifts, food brought to my home or concerns for my well-being. I am so blessed by your kindness and thoughtfulness. We are so fortunate to have FirstLight Health System, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, the helicopter service and St. Clare’s Living Community of Mora and their entire staffs available to us when we experience a medical emergency. They are there for us at a moment’s notice and I so appreciate their expertise and availability when something like this happens. God bless all of you. Most sincerely, Joann Goldsmith
