2016 F estival program

Chair’s Welcome I would like to welcome you to the 20th annual Kamloops Film Festival! Can you believe it? The KFF Committee is so proud of this exceptional milestone and so excited to share this extra special festival with you, our devoted audience. The success of the KFF is built on your continued support, the vision and commitment of that very first 1997 committee, and all the committee members and supporters who have come since. Relive the memories through our history board in the lobby and on our website where past festival brochures and posters are available. Personally, I feel so honoured to be a part of this committee. It is made up of twenty-one committed, hardworking, and passionate individuals who each add something special to this wonderful event. In my eight years with the KFF, I have seen this committee grow from eight members to a total of twenty-two this year. This speaks to two things: There is so much more happening at the festival and thus more hands on deck are required; but also, audiences are excited about having this festival in Kamloops and want to get involved. People just approach me (usually at the closing party) and state their enthusiasm for helping, or current members bring on their friends and family because they

Celebrating ♥ 20 Years

are delighted to share the experience. It isn’t easy. Many, many, many (many) hours are put in to bring this festival to you, but every time a new connection is made, a new idea is sparked, or a new experience is lived; it’s all worth it. As always, I have a lot of people to thank this year: From all of the excellent members of the KFF Committee, to our very generous sponsors and community partners, to our tireless volunteers and committed audience. Everyone wants to see this festival succeed and we are so thankful for your support. We literally couldn’t do it without you. For the 20th KFF we have brought you twenty films (five more than last year), new events (like the Tea Party on the first Saturday, as well as Brewing and WINE-ing discussions to go along with our Steeping ones), the return of DarkFest (with twice as many movies!), and new special guests (some directly from LA). We want to immerse you in the festival. So thank you for coming. I am confident that you will love this little film festival taking place in our own back yard. See something exciting, meet someone new, share an experience. 20 films. 10 Days. Are you up for it?

Sincerely, Dušan Magdolen Kamloops Film Festival Chair

A STEEPING DISCUSSION PDK Café (438 Victoria Street) Thursday, March 10 at 9:30pm

opening night

Paramount Theatre Friday, March 4 at 9pm & Friday, March 11 at 9pm

Our film for a cause this year is the whimsical British film, The Lady in the Van. This year’s charity of choice is the Kamloops Food Bank and we are encouraging all attendees to bring non-perishable food items and cash support for this superb community organization. The Food Bank and their trusty truck will be in attendance to accept your donations.

Following our wildly successful steeping discussion last year, PDK has graciously offered up their delicious donuts, tea and coffee once more! Join us for a double feature--Son of Saul at 6pm and Ben’s at Home at 8pm. Experience comedy and tragedy and everything in between, and then let that roller coaster of emotions take you to 438 Victoria Street, for comfort food, good company, and in-depth discussions.

HAIDA GWAII Q&A Hotel 540 (540 Victoria Street) Thursday, March 3 at 9pm Following the 7pm showing of Haida Gwaii: On the Edge of the World, join special guests Rudy Buttignol and Murray Battle from the Knowledge Network, Director Charles Wilkinson and Producer Tina Schliessler (KFF 2014’s Oil Sands Karaoke) for a fascinating Q&A. OPENING NIGHT MINGLE & JAZZ Hotel 540 (540 Victoria Street) Thursday, March 3 at 9:30pm Take your Thursday evening to the next level: walk the red carpet, watch a spectacular film, engage in conversation, meet some interesting people, and get your mingle on. After the Haida Gwaii discussion closes, guests are invited to join the Opening Night Mingle upstairs in the Mountain View Terrace at Hotel 540. Enjoy complimentary appetizers, a cash bar and the jazz infused melodies of Kamloops singer Cathi Marshall and guitarist Jon Treichel. What a way to kick off the 20th annual Kamloops Film Festival!

Help the KFF celebrate our darker side by joining us for the return of DarkFest: with twice as much frightening goodness as last year. The first Friday features Regression, starring Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson, about a father who is accused of a crime he has no memory of committing. On the second Friday we present the unnerving period horror, The Witch, about a 1630s New England family torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic and possession. To see both of these spine tingling films at the lowest price, make sure to buy a DarkFest pass from kamloopsfilmfest.ca. Then prepare to jump and scream in unison as DarkFest comes back just a little darker this year… TEA PARTY Kamloops Art Gallery (465 Victoria Street) Saturday, March 5, 10am-12pm Pop by for a pre-matinee tea party at the Kamloops Art Gallery! The 12pm film, Snowtime! (3D), is a family friendly, Canadian-made, 3D animated feature that’s sure to delight young and old. So make a morning of it and bring along the whole family to the KAG before the screening, as David’s Tea will be providing a lovely herbal tea buffet and yummy cold tea options for the little ones. As well, Kamloops Princess Parties will be at the library, ready to engage with the young, and the young at heart. Any ticket for the Kamloops Film Festival gets you free access to the KAG exhibit, the Tea Party, and the princesses.

A BREWING DISCUSSION Red Collar Brewery (355 Lansdowne Street) Tuesday, March 8 at 8pm Following our showing of A Royal Night Out, the KFF team will be hosting our first-ever “Brewing Discussion” at Red Collar Brewery downtown. Building off the success of our Steeping Discussions, we are excited for this new foray into hops fuelled film debate. Enjoy panini and beer samples as you discuss this delightful comedy of errors, based on the true story of the future Queen Elizabeth and her sister Margaret sneaking out to join the V.E. Day celebrations. A WINE-ING DISCUSSION Blue Dining & Lounge (540 Victoria Street) Wednesday, March 9 at 9pm After the gripping, devastating, dramatic and oh so bloody rendition of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, tea just won’t do! After leaving the Paramount, cross over to Blue at Hotel 540 for a gorgeous glass of wine. As well, rumour has it that their chocolate chip cookies are to die for. With Michael Fassbender as the murderous Macbeth and Marion Cotillard as the conniving Lady Macbeth, the performances alone will be great fodder for wine charged conversation!

A STEEPING DISCUSSION The Painted Pony Café (705 Victoria Street) Saturday, March 12 at 4:30pm Before you catch the final movie and dance your tushy off at the Closing Night Party, come over to The Painted Pony, a café known for its delicious bannock, for the last steeping discussion of the film festival season following the thrilling cinematic experience that is Embrace the Serpent. FILM VOTING & FESTIVAL DRAW Rate each film you attend and see whether your favourite is given the Audience Favourite Award at the end of the fest. Plus, fill out our festival survey to be entered into a draw for your chance to win two free passes to KFF 2017. The draw winner will be announced at the Festival Closing Party. Ethan Hawke is an utterly magnetic screen presence as Chet Baker, the legendary trumpeter and singer who, after becoming a jazz icon in the 1950s, became equally famous for his drug addiction. Born to be Blue reimagines Baker’s life as a mixture of factual and fictional events, picking up his story late in his career when — after years of heroin abuse, financial loss, and public disgrace — he stages a comeback. A film about one glorious evening in the lives of two real-life princesses. The night is May 8, 1945 and the whole of London is on the streets to celebrate the official end of World War II. It is known the young princesses, aged 19 and 14, slipped out of the palace to join the communal euphoria and went dancing at the Ritz. They apparently returned to Buckingham Palace just after midnight. A Royal Night Out is an affectionate ‘whatif’ story about the adventures they might have had on the joyous night that brought the whole of London together.
