Kettles want you to add to the pot By Dale Bass

In 2010, the Salvation Army’s kettle campaign, augmented by a letter campaign, raised $270,000 to run programs for the city’s needy. This year’s effort has begun and continues to just before Christmas. Want to help? Call 250-554-1611. KTW file photo

They’re out there. You may have already heard the bells ringing. The Salvation Army has started its annual Christmas Kettle campaign and, by the time the season ends, 13 local businesses will have provided it with space to conduct its one fundraiser of the year. “This community has always been so good to us,” said Sharleen McTaggart who, with husband Wayne, came to the Kamloops church 2.5 years ago. Last year, the kettle campaign collected $177,000. A letter campaign took that total to about $270,000, McTaggart said. It’s a lot of money, but every cent is needed to run the many programs the Army provides. This year, two were added — a 12-step pro-

gram for women was created and a full-time addictions counsellor was hired. The counsellor also focuses on the women who go to the Poplar Street church, a direction that was identified by its family-services department that was seeing more and more women seeking help. “They needed some special attention,” McTaggart said, “and it seems to be working.” A lot of the money raised goes to the

Army’s food-hamper program, which has seen usage increase 25 per cent in 2010 and another 25 per cent this year. There has been a concerted effort to put fresh produce, dairy products and meats in the hampers, McTaggart said, because the Army approaches it — as it does its meals program — “from the perspective of what I’d like to feed my family.” Meals are provided

three times a week, from a mobile kitchen downtown on Tuesdays and Thursdays and at the church on Wednesdays. The program has been boosted by three volunteers, men who have worked as chefs in the past and are bringing their skills to the menus, McTaggart said. “One of the Salvation Army’s themes is dignity, that we show dignity to our clients,” she said. “So, when we serve meal, we do it as if we’re inviting people to our home. “Of course, you have people who abuse the system, but they can have families at home that rely on them who aren’t abusing the system.” The campaign began on Nov. 18 and continues to just before Christmas. Volunteers are still needed. For more information on helping, call 250-554-1611 and ask for Heather McQueen.
