ICONOGRAPHY ICONOGRAPHY IS A PROJECT DESIGNED FOR ELSTERNWICK LIBRARY LOCATED NEAR A VIBRANT AND PROSPEROUS GLENHUNTLY ROAD. TOGETHER WITH THE DISTINCTIVE HERITAGE FEEL AND A SENSE OF PLACE, A FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE AND COMMUNITY IS ACHIEVED - A CONTRAST TO THE EXISTING LIBRARY EXPERIENCE. BY RESEARCHING EVENTS HELD WITHIN ELSTERNWICK’S SUBURBS AND THE CITY OF GLEN EIRA I PROPOSED A LIBRARY THAT WOULD BECOME ICONIC TO ITS COMMUNITY - AN ADDITION TO THE EXISTING ICONS OF GLEN EIRA. IT WAS EVIDENT THE COMMUNITY REQUIRED A SPACE IN WHICH THESE EVENTS WOULD BE HELD CONTRIBUTING TO ELSTERNWICK’S MAINSTREET COMMITTEE’S VISION OF DEVELOPING ATTRACTIVE PUBLIC SPACES AND COMMUNITY FACILITIES. THE CONCEPT DESIGN REPRESENTATIVE OF A THEATRE PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY TO HOUSE THE EVENTS HELD WITHIN THE CITY IN ONE SPACE. THE MAIN PROGRAMS OF FOCUS ARE LITERATURE, PERFORMANCE AND EDUCATION. THE MANY FLOOR LEVELS WITHIN THE THEATRE DESIGN ALLOW FOR THE SPACE TO BE USED ACCORDING TO THE DEMANDS OF THE USERS. CUSHION SEATS ARE DESIGNED INTO THE STAIRS FOR THE USERS TO SIT AND READ A BOOK OR PERHAPS TO WATCH A PERFORMANCE. THESE CAN BE FLIPPED MAKING SMOOTH STAIR SURFACES ON WHICH A SMALL ORCHESTRA CAN PERFORM. THE FACADE IS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE LAYOUT OF THE CITY OF GLEN EIRA SYMBOLISING THAT THIS IS WHERE ALL OF THE COMMUNITY MEETS. THE INTERIOR SPACE IS A REPRESENTATION OF THE MANY DIFFERENT STYLES THAT CAN BE FOUND IN GLEN EIRA. THE ALMOST POSTMODERN APPROACH TO DESIGN WHERE A COMBINATION OF STYLES TAKE PLACE, THE COMMUNITY IS ABLE TO HAVE AN ICONIC LIBRARY REPRESENTATIVE OF ITS CITY WHILST PROVIDING FUNCTIONAL USE.

SOCIOPOLITICAL LANGUAGE OF THE INVISIBLE PEOPLE THE LANGUAGE OF THE INVISIBLE PEOPLE IS A MUSEUM THAT SHOWCASES SOCIOPOLITICAL NARRATIVES GATHERED FROM AROUND THE WORLD WITH AN EMPHASIS ON THE FORMS OF MELBOURNE’S POLITICAL ACTIVISM. SITUATED IN AN ISOLATED AREA IN HIGSON LANE, THE MUSEUM IS CENTRED BETWEEN TWO OF THE MOST TOURIST VISITED LANES IN MELBOURNE, HOSIER AND ACDC LANES. THESE ARE THE PLACES WHERE PEOPLE CHOOSE TO LEAVE THEIR SOCIOPOLITICAL NARRATIVES, THESE ARE THE PLACES WHERE AN OUTSIDER CAN DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE CULTURAL EVENTS, VALUES AND THOUGHTS OF MELBOURNE CITIZENS AND THESE ARE THE EPHEMERAL GESTURES OF THE AUTHORLESS PEOPLE CAPTURING THE PAST, THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE STATE OF EVENTS. THE MUSEUM CAPTURES THESE POLITICAL NARRATIVES AS TOLD BY THE AUTHORLESS PEOPLE THEMSELVES, SUGGESTING THE IMPORTANCE OF PRESERVING THEM. THE ARCHIVES SUCH AS STENCILS, POSTERS, SLOGANS AND OBJECTS WERE COLLECTED FROM MELBOURNE STREETS, AUTHOR’S NOTEBOOKS AND THE WORLDWIDE WEB THAT HAS PLAYED AN IMPORTANT PART IN SHOWCASING AND RECORDING THESE ARCHIVES - KEEPING THEM PRESENT. THE ARCHIVES ARE DISPLAYED IN A FORM OF A LIGHTBOX BY THOSE IN HOSIER LANE. THIS APPROACH (LARGELY USED IN OUTDOOR ADVERTISEMENT, AS WELL AS FORMS OF ARCHIVES SUCH AS SLOGANS AND POSTERS WERE PROVEN TO WORK SUCCESSFULLY AS A FORM OF USSR AGITATION. ALTHOUGH THE MUSEUM IS NOT TRYING TO ENFORCE A POLITICAL SIDE ON THE VIEWER, THE DISPLAY FORM WORKS WELL IN ORDER TO HAVE THE WORK STAND OUT, REACH OUT AND AFFECT THE VIEWER. IN THE EARLY DECADES OF THE 20TH CENTURY, MUSEUMS WERE SELECTED AS A SUITABLE SITE TO FURTHER A POLITICAL POINT. A WHITE BOX ROOM ON THE LAST LEVEL ALLOWS THE USERS TO HAVE DISCUSSIONS, OVERLOOK THE CITY AND REFLECT ON THE WORLD AT WHICH THEY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO LOOK AT FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE THROUGH THE JOURNEY IN THE MUSEUM.

LIGHTBOX INSTALLATION CONSTRUCTION THE LIGHTBOX IS CONSTRUCTED OUT OF POLYCARBONATE SHEETS SLOTTED INTO CUSTOM-MADE ALUMINIUM FRAMES. TWO LAMPS PLACED INSIDE THE BOX LIGHT UP THE ARCHIVES FROM WITHIN WHILST GUIDING THE USERS UP THE STAIR.

UTOPIAN BLANKET THE UTOPIAN BLANKET, ORIGINALLY MADE FROM CYLINDRICAL PRESS PVC MODULES AND ATTACHED BY VELCRO IS A PERFORMATIVE PIECE DESIGNED TO BE EASILY RECONFIGURED, TRANSFERRED AND USED FOR A PERFORMATIVE ACT. PHILLIP ADAMS WHO IS THE FOUNDER AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF BALLETLAB IN MELBOURNE HAS SELECTED THIS AS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL PROJECT WHICH ANSWERED ALL OF THE CRITERIA WHILST CREATING A STRONG PERFORMATIVE PIECE WITH STUNNING LIGHT EFFECTS. THIS PIECE WAS THEN SELECTED FOR A GROUP PROJECT WHERE SILVER SARKING HAD TO BE INTRODUCED TO THE MODULES. THE INTRODUCTION OF THE NEW MATERIAL MEANT THAT A UTOPIAN EXPERIENCE WAS ABLE TO BE CREATED THROUGH THE FREEDOM OF CREATING A DYSTOPIAN ENVIRONMENT FREE OF SPECIFICITY OR CONSTRUCTION. DUE TO HAVING SUCH ITERATIONS OF MODULES, THE USERS ARE FORCED TO ENACT THEIR MOVEMENT CAREFULLY SO AS TO TRY NOT TO GET ENTANGLED. AT THIS POINT THE USERS CAN TEST THE BOUNDARIES AND ATTEMPT TO MOVE FREELY THROUGH THE SURFACE, ALMOST FORGETTING IT IS THERE. AS THE USERS MOVE THROUGH THE BLANKET, THE FOAM DISKS BEGIN TO CLUSTER INTO A CHAOTIC STATE ATTACHING TO THE CLOTHING OF THE PERFORMERS AND DRAGGING THE BLANKET ALONG. THROUGH THE PROCESS OF BREAKING THE BOUNDARIES, A UTOPIAN EXPERIENCE THROUGH THE DYSTOPIAN JOURNEY IS CREATED.
