In creative writing we learned many things that I would have never thought of on my own about writing. One thing i really liked was poetry. In my writings I tend to cut things short. In creative writing we learned different ways to add punctuation. Adding punctuation in different places can help you emphasis words that you want to really stick out. For example in my poem Eyes I use this strategy in the first stanza when it say “deep in thought, a boy” This really puts the emphasis on the fact that this boy is in her thoughts. Another example of this is in the second stanza when It reads “She begins to dream, again” This puts emphasis on the fact that not only is she dreaming of this boy but its not the first time. She is dreaming of him again. I use my punctuation to make a statement in the poem Remember. At the end of every line i have a period to emphasis the feelings and things that I felt on my vacation. Another thing that I learned in creative writing that helped me a lot is about dialog. I have always had a hard time with dialog. Where to put it, when its appropriate, and what to do when I have to use it. I learned that its usually best to start your dialog in its own line and not put it in the middle of a paragraph. This helps your reader see it and know that its coming. Sometimes readers get confused when your dialog isn’t clear. Another thing about dialog that is important is the fact that you should introduce your speaker. Make sure it is very clear who the speaker is. An example of the way I used these strategies is in my micro fiction piece From a Distance when I start dialog between Owen and Sophie I say ““Hi…” He gulped. He felt his cheeks get red as she looked at him. “Hello” “I’m Owen” He couldn't understand why he was acting so shy. He had confronted many people in his life. He had made it known to all of them what he was. For some odd reason he couldn't do it to her. He couldn't take her life.” These skills helped me tremendously when writing my stories. One last strategy I think helped me the most would be Characterization. Putting a character together is really hard. You have to come up with all the details of their life and stick with them. This person has to have a place in your story and needs to make sense. Characterization is hard for me. To

invent new characters that are different and work together. I used the characterization exercise to create my character in my story The Desire this character is a girl in her 20’s she works at a bar and her parents were murdered. She is in search of her parents killers and is determined to kill them. She is almost obsessed with it. She has only one friend named Ryan who helps her through her journey. To come up with all this information was hard but it helped make my story great. The assignments we were assigned in class have definitely helped me grow as a writer. My first poem in this class took me about 2 days to write and was only 10 lines and 50 words. This poem has changed itself so much since the first time I wrote it. I have learned so much about different writing techniques and the ways that i can apply them. My short story compared to my first non fiction piece can show you how much i have grown. The details between the two pieces has definitely improved. I am very happy with the way that creative writing has helped me improve and grow as a writer. If i could go back I would do everything the same.

Eyes Â

She lies in under the greenwood tree deep in thought, a boy with brown hair and green eyes She is left wondering, when will they meet again? will it be soon? She falls asleep soon leaves falling from the tree. She begins to dream, again of the mysterious boy leaving her wondering, about his eyes. Those beautiful green eyes she is with him soon no longer wondering, or waiting by the tree. Face to face with the boy, face to face, again. She is smiling again looking deep in his eyes,

Who is this boy? Will he be leaving soon? Will I be left under the greenwood tree? Left wondering. Will I no longer be wondering? Happy again. The wind blows through the tree she blinks her eyes. He is gone, too soon this mysterious boy. She’s waiting for this boy rain falls on her face, she’s wondering, will she wake soon? She’s hurt again, opening her eyes. Still under the greenwood tree. Left wondering again, why she sees him only with closed eyes, under the greenwood tree.

Dinosaurs Â

As I stare out over the land, I look at the flowers, then the palm trees, I admire the beauty and stare at the leaves. I see the bright sun so I put up my hand, Then I walk to the beach to sit on the sand. There is nothing I like more than the beach. I sit there alone and eat a peach, I feel as if I need a fan. I then leave the beach to go eat another sinner, I walk among the other dinosaurs, I am so hungry and big. Everyone wonders who will go next, There are so many sinners, but I just want my dinner. I am one of the biggest carnivores and I am off again to perform another violent gig. The beach is the only thing that calms me down, but I need to eat and get away from this hex.

The Kid Â

A smoldering day without a breeze in the trees, A child sat alone. Sweat rained down his face his mom no where to be found, the boy was little. Old enough to walk not quite old enough to talk, just sitting alone. On a brown park bench patiently waiting for her, not making a sound. She finally came with some ice cream in her hands, they smiled I did not.

Future

One year make it happen. Shine, in ways you've never shined before. Show the world that you matter. That you aren't just that girl that sits, quietly waiting to be seen. You will be heard, seen, and honored, for your time, sacrifices. All the things you have to show for yourself. Personal achievements, Overcome by sweat tears and blood. Walk with friends. Cross the bridge. To your future.

It calls

It sits and waits, knowing she can't resist its touch. It calls to her Its vibrations strong. Knowing she will give in, she doesn't know any better. A light pops on She tilts her head in curiosity. Knowing the consequences, she brushes it off. She can feel the way is calls to her Whispers. It can sense the tension, as it lights up again. Another buzz. Soft, but instigating. She gives in, picks it up gently. Quietly. She looks at it concentrating. It feels success. Control. The world in its hands. A cell phone.

Remember Â

I remember the screams. The roars. The laughs. I remember the smells. The lights. The smiles. I remember the fun. The heat. The love. I remember the water. The oranges. The trees. I remember the tears. The joy. The cameras. I remember the wedding. The hot winter. My trip to Florida.

Like a Cave Â

Her body is like a cave hollow, cold until something fills the vacancy. Creatures claim their territory to soon lose interest, leaving behind only the scent of their existence leaving a scent of abandonment, her core cold. Dark. Used. Like a cave.

Flash

Her life flashed before her eyes as she slammed on her breaks, slamming into the tree. She met jesus that day. Text

She opened her eyes expecting her husband to be lying next to her. Instead a note that read "He texted you last night, I'll love you always" Summer

She was happy that summer, she knew she would no longer have to go back. Shock

Her water spilled sending a shock up her body, phone in hand realizing her mistake. Beast

His kiss was a drug, and she was hooked. Forever hooked to a beast.

From a Distance

He watched her from a distance. It was in his nature to want her. He was in fact a beast. Just the smell of her made his mouth water. He was inching his way closer and closer to her, when they suddenly made eye contact. Instead of looking away like any other stalker would he stared. He couldn't help but look into her eyes. They were as blue as the sky, with every eyelash placed in perfect symmetry with the others. All his natural instincts were set aside as he watched her beauty. He no longer wanted to kill her, but to hold her. He felt his emotions take over. Realizing that not only was he staring at her, but she was staring at him, and smiling. He suddenly felt the urge to talk to her. So he slowly approached her, not realizing that he might need to explain what he was doing watching her. “Hi…” He gulped. He felt his cheeks get red as she looked at him. “Hello” “I’m Owen” He couldn't understand why he was acting so shy. He had confronted many people in his life. He had made it known to all of them what he was. For some odd reason he couldn't do it to her. He couldn't take her life. “I’m Sophie” she mumbled hesitantly. “What are you doing out here alone…?” He had suddenly trailed off realizing that she wasn’t the person he thought she was. She was one of them. She was a soul taker. No wonder he had been attracted to her. He had to get out of there, but it was too late. She already had him hooked in with her beautiful eyes.

The Desire

It was dark in the small metal shack I called home. My parents didn't leave me much after their death. I could never understand why we lived in such a small place when they had so much money. My father was the highest ranking viking leader in their army. Until his death that is. My mom worked as a nurse for the viking army. I missed my parents. All the long lonely nights made me regret all the fights we ever had. The only other place I went was to work. I worked at a small bar near town called star nights. It was never crowded there which I liked. My parents always tried to distance me from most people. The night my parents died I was at work. I heard the terrible news from my boss. Two pirates came and slit their throats with acid swords. Their bodies found by my father’s best friend. They tore her entire house apart as though they were looking for something. My room in particular was a mess. All my clothes were out of the closet, my bed was flipped, and all my drawers were gone through. No one knows who did this or why. Its was my goal to find out. I have been looking into their death more closely than anyone else. I want to find their killers and make them pay for what they did. The only other person I told about my plans was my best friend. His name is owen. He moved next to me the summer of my fourteenth birthday. We have been inseparable ever since. We have dug up a little bit about their death. Thier killers names were Eva and Ryan Hutchinson, Ryan was the captain of the great white pirate ship, and Eva his wife was a shipmate. They are in their 30’s, and lost a daughter when she was only one and a half years old. These are the people who I dedicate my life to kill. Its hard to get outside our group when the guards are watching 24/7. We would need to plan our escape with elaborate details to get out of here. “Why dont we go through the old underground subway station?” Owen insisted. “Idk are the gates locked?” I asked. “No they are rusted and broken off” Just the thought of actually escaping made my heart pound. Ive been waiting for this for a year now.

“We will leave tomorrow night at midnight don’t be late” I warned. “I won’t trust me” I was more excited than i could ever be. Which was quite weird because i was going to take someones life. I was so nervous I didn’t sleep much last night. I tossed and turned all night trying to decide exactly what I was going to do. I layed on my bed and looked at the picture i had of my mom and dad. It was weird my dad had blonde hair, blue eyes and he was very tall and skinny. My mom had light brown hair brown eyes and was also tall for a women. She was about 5’6. I only grew to be 5’2, with light blue eyes that everyone envied, and dark brown hair. My parents always told me that i was rare. There were few people in this world that were born with my rare features. My mom said it was a gene that passed down through generations and generations. I started to think about what the people who killed my parents looked like. I knew where they lived and everything about them except what they looked like. My plan is to sneak into their house by 3:00AM. They should be asleep by then, I hope, and the killing will go smoothly. It took me a while to fall asleep but when I did i dreamt of how it would be. How it would feel to take a life. I was scared. More scared than I have ever been. Waking up this morning i was having second thoughts about going. Then the image of my parents popped back into my head. I need to do this for my parents sake. To take back honor for my family. Owen met me at midnight like planned. We were both wearing black spandex suits with black rubber gloves. We made our journey to the subway gates. It was dark and there was a musty old smell in the air. “You can tell these subways haven’t been used in years!” Owen half shouted half whispered a couple of steps ahead of me. “I know its kind of creepy” I whispered back.

We walked through cobwebs and old water that had little drops of shiny rainbows in them from the oil. There was a lot of trash laying around and i was uncomfortable with the fact that we were so far already. Time went by and we could see a small glow in front of us. We knew it was still dark out only because it was only 2:00AM. The moon must have been very bright this night. I was starting to feel like something was watching me. I wasn't sure what it was but it was making me feel skittish. Owen must have sensed the tension too when he turned around and said to me. “Here grab my hand, we shouldn't get too far from each other.” This made my heart flutter which was weird. I have never felt that before, his gloved hand was big. A lot bigger than mine was and it made me feel safe. It was odd, thinking about the fact that just holding someones hand could make you feel different. We got to the end of the tunnel and he looked back at me, giving me that ‘are you ready’ look. I was nervous but knew it had to be done. We made our way through the trees and brush blocking the city ahead.

I Believe

Last year I met a boy. This boy changed my life, and he is the reason I believe in love. I never knew I could feel this way about a boy. He is my best friend and I wouldn't trade him for anything. Last year I was on twitter when my phone buzzed. The text was about an Amber alert. I tweeted about it, and the next thing I knew someone tweeted me back. There was only one thing, I didn't know this person that was tweeting me. Who is this and why are they talking to me? I didn't know then but this person will change my life. His name is Trevor, he has brown hair, greenish brown eyes and a perfect smile. I thought he was pretty cute. So I commented back and it went on from there. I have been with him for a year now. I often ask myself what keeps us together? The look he gives me, the way he smells, the perfection in his smile? I think its love. Its the feeling i get in my stomach when he walks into the room. The way he makes my head spin when he looks at me. The way I feel safe in his arms. People search their whole lives to find something this special, and i have found it. A lot of people ask me. How can you be in love you're only 17 years old, but i answer with the fact that they haven't felt what I've felt, experienced what I have or lived the way i live. So who are they to judge me. I have found someone to love, and someone who loves me. Which is why i believe in love.

Authors Notes Eyes

She lies in under the greenwood tree deep in her thoughts, a boy with brown hair and green eyes She is left wondering, when will they meet again? will it be soon? She falls asleep soon leaves falling from the tree. She begins to dream, again Of the mysterious boy leaving her wondering about his eyes. The wind blows through the tree she blinks her eyes. He is gone, too soon this mysterious boy. Shes waiting for this boy rain falls on her face, shes wondering, will she wake soon? Shes hurt again, opening her eyes. Still under the greenwood tree. Left wondering again, why she sees him only with closed eyes, under the greenwood tree. I didn't change a lot in this i changed mostly capitalization and punctuation. I had to change some of my grammar like shes to she’s. I changed the second line from ‘deep in her thoughts, a boy’ to ‘deep in thought, a boy’ I think this fit better and sounded a lot better.

Future

One year make it happen. shine, in ways you've never shined before. show the world that you matter. That you aren't, just that girl that sits, quietly waiting to be seen. You will be heard, seen and honored. For your time, sacrifices. All the things, you have to show for yourself. Personal achievements, Overcome, by sweat tears and blood. walk, with friends. Cross the bridge To your future. Showing honor to your family.

I changed some minor things in this poem. For example my punctuation and capitalization. I had a lot of commas in places where they didn't belong and that messed up my capitalization. I did end up cutting the last line out because it didn't make much sense or sound right with where i was going with it.

Like a Cave Â

Her body is like a cave. Hollow and cold. Till someone comes along and fills the vacancy. The warmth comes and goes. Used by all the creatures that want. Her skin hard wanting to shield the hurt. Her eyes damp, weathered by emotion. Her core cold. Dark. Like a cave. This poem had me very stuck. It took me a long time to make it perfect. I ended up changing it quite a bit actually. For example I changed the second line to have no ‘and’ in it. I thought this put more emphasis on the fact that she was hollow and cold all at the same time but to emphasis the words as separate instead of showing them together. Another thing I changed was the last couple lines. I was told to make it more like a cave and make them feel like shes like a cave.

From a Distance

He watched her from a distance. It was in his nature to want her. Just the smell of her made his mouth water. He was inching his way closer and closer to her, when they suddenly made eye contact. She was one of them. She was a soul taker. No wonder he had been attracted to her. He had to get out of there, but it was too late. She already had him hooked in with her beautiful eyes. I didn't really change much about this piece. I did change the dialog format a little bit but making the dialog indented. This helped people see where the dialog was. Also I included the fact that that he was a beast because people were confused on what he was if he was human or if he was some sort of monster.

For this story I was having a hard time figuring out whether or not to put it in first person or third person. With the help of my workshop group i decided that it sounded best in first person. This helps you understand her emotions better and helps you get into her thoughts and the way she feels. I changed the entire first paragraph to be in first person instead of third.
