KAKAHU GENETICS YOUR INVESTMENT OUR COMMITMENT

WELCOME TO OUR YEARLING SALE THE IMPORTANCE OF LIVE CALVES

2

Progeny testing in Australia, New Zealand and America have shown that Estimated Breeding Value predictions with high accuracy are generally what happens. A cow which has good easy calving mated to a bull with good easy calving (CED) is very, very likely to produce a son with good easy calving. Pile this trait on generation after generation and a breeder can mate his heifers with confidence. It is what every commercial breeder wants and at Kakahu we believe it is up to us the stud breeder to make it happen. The graphs over the page show the trends for Kakahu over the years for Calving Ease Direct, Daughters, Gestation Length and Birth Weight. These are derived from many measurements done in the paddock. For us measurement is essential. Otherwise how do you know if you are going forward or backwards? Accurate mating dates, accurate calving dates so that we can determine gestation length and days between calving and the next mating; making sure we cull every cow that fails to raise a calf; weighing calves at birth; never giving a bad mother the benefit of the doubt. Breedplan relies on accurate measurements to be able to produce meaningful information for the breeder. So much happens in the calving paddock. It is where we get to know our cows, good ones and silly ones, the great old cow that sniffs your hand while the calf is marked -

she knows all about it by now with 12 calves in 12 years. Genetic progress is made by turnover, but the solid base of the stud herd comes from those cows that never fail to raise a calf annually, pick up quickly and conceive early. They do it what-ever the weather. We have been weighing our calves since the 70’s. The trend has been downwards by about 4kgs, and this, with increasing numbers. But calving success in more than just about calving weights. Cows have shorter gestation length now. Our EBVs for that and for calving ease are far better than the Australasian average. By measuring and using all the data possible we have been able to build up accuracy so that now our birth weight EBVs for instance, are some of the best possible for young cattle. By using carefully selected bulls, we have been able to maintain low birth and breed calves that grow fast. This is profit for the commercial breeder. If he fattens his own, they go earlier. When he replaces his cows with young heifers, he has more to select from. If he is selling calves in the yard, they look the part on the day. It is well worth calving heifers as two year olds. Kakahu has been doing this for over 20 years now and in our main sale catalogue, 30% of the bulls offered are out of first calving heifers. The commercial breeder needs to be able to calve theirs with confidence though, and of course this does not

come over night. The cows need to have the basis for easy calving which they will pass on to their offspring. It is a long term plan which will take several generations. The 40 bulls selected for this sale are in the top 25% in Australasia for calving ease direct and the top 15% for CE DTRS ; the top 16% for birth weight whilst maintaining Carcase Weight. Mature Cow Weight is close to the 400DW so that offspring grow fast without becoming lanky big cattle. The average for their API is $166 (National average 121) which is in the top 8% for New Zealand. This makes them some of the most profitable cattle in New Zealand.

OUR GUARANTEE All bulls are guaranteed for a period of three years for fertility and soundness. If a bull for some reason does not perform as a result of his fertility or a structural defect, excluding injury, we will refund the purchase price or part there of as arranged with the breeder. Please notify us before disposing of the bull. All bulls are AMFU, NHFU,CAFU,and DDF or DDFU free.

GESTATION LENGTH (DAYS) KAKAHU ANGUS HERD AUSTRALASIAN BREED AVERAGE Gestation Length is an estimate of the time from EBV

conception to the birth of the calf and is based on AI and hand mating records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate shorter gestation length and therefore easier calving and increased growth after birth. CALVING YEAR

BIRTH WEIGHT (KG) KAKAHU ANGUS HERD AUSTRALASIAN BREED AVERAGE Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured EBV

birth weight of progeny, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers. CALVING YEAR

ANGUS DATABASE A TREASURE TROVE OF GENETIC INFORMATION BY RUSSELL PRIEST From the ANGUS Magazine 2018 Of all the cattle breeds in New Zealand the Angus is the most genetically diverse and for this reason it is arguably the most exciting breed to be involved with, at least for the genetic purist. Not only is there a lot of genetic variation but there are also a number of bulls (outliers or freaks) displaying abnormal genetic relationships between antagonistic traits. Genetic variation enables genetic change and the larger the variation the more change is possible. Antagonistic traits are the curse of the animal breeder. However by identifying 8

and breeding from outliers that moderate these antagonisms it is possible to achieve more positive genetic change. The antagonistic relationship between birth weight and growth was the first of several abnormal genetic relationships now familiar to breeders to be considered. Because the birth weight, growth rate (200, 400 and 600Day weights) and mature weight traits all share a number of common genes, when selection pressure is applied to one of these the others respond. For example, selecting for high growth will normally drive both birth and mature weights up. However, with the advent of performance recording and genetic evaluation it was discovered that a good number of animals do not conform to the same extent to this normal trend. These animals generally emerge from large recorded populations like American Angus. A population has to be recorded to identify these outliers and the larger is the population the more likely they are to occur. An animal with an abnormal genetic relationship between birth weight and growth became known as a “growth curve bender because it displayed a higher-than-expected growth rate based on its birth weight. Such an animal is very

valuable because it will produce calves with lower-thanexpected birth weights (potentially fewer calving problems) and higher-than-expected growth – both financially positive outcomes. The same scenario applies to growth and mature weight. When upward selection pressure is applied to growth, mature weight increases. The latter is not a positive financial outcome for the cow herd owner because the cost of maintaining the cows will rise (cow maintenance cost is the largest single cost in a cow herd). Once again an outlier (“growth curve bender”) is identified. However on this occasion the growth curve is bent at the mature weight end – mature weight is lower than expected based on the animal’s growth rate. So by breeding from such an animal the herd owner is achieving the best of both worlds – getting good growth while lowering cow size. The other good news is that one animal may display several abnormal genetic relationships, as seen in the genetic picture of the following genetically outstanding Angus bull.

Genetically an excellent Angus bull (Bull A)

This bull is an excellent example of an outlier who has broken not just one genetic relationship that we know of but several. Note his high percentile rankings for lighter birth weight and 200, 400 and 600-Day growth. Note also his low percentile ranking (lighter cow weight) for Mature Cow Weight. All of these are financially positive trends. 9

And there’s more. The traits Direct Calving Ease (the ease with which an animal’s calves are born) and Daughters Calving Ease (the ease with which a bull’s daughters calve) are also antagonistic traits. This means that if sustained selection pressure is applied to improving one it will generally be at the expense of the other. This scenario often occurs when breeders buy bulls with high Direct Calving Ease EBVs to mate with their 15-month heifers to minimise calving problems and retain some of the female progeny for breeding. This practise works well if the selected bulls have good Daughters’ Calving Ease figures as well. However, if they don’t and this practice continues there is a good chance that a calving difficulty problem may occur in the two-year heifers sired by such bulls. Note both Bull A’s Calving Ease (Direct and Daughters’) EBVs are ranked well within the top 10% for the breed and since both are likely to be excellent positive EBVs they will have a significant financial influence on the Self Replacing and AngusPure Indexes. Rib/rump fat and carcase yield are also antagonistic traits. These two fats are major contributors to low yielding carcases – a financial issue for the processor. However 10

herd owners want their cows to carry a certain amount of fat on their backs to get them through the winter so fat for them acts like a mobile hayshed. Note this bull’s percentile rankings are all above the breed average for rib and rump fat as well as retail yield – yet another example of an antagonistic genetic relationship being modified. Bulls with moderated antagonistic traits often have better indexes than those showing normal degrees of antagonism. This is particularly so if the traits are significant profit drivers resulting in the financial gains made in one trait being offset by the negative financial effects of the other. Greater profit results if the antagonism is moderated as is seen in the case of Bull A where the antagonistic effect of the two calving ease traits, the birth and growth traits and the growth and mature weight traits are considerably reduced. As a direct contrast the following genetic picture displays a genetically very poor Angus bull showing only one abnormality in his genetic relationships – one that is definitely not financially beneficial.

Genetically a very poor Angus bull (Bull B)

bars representing them are heading in the same negative direction with potentially serious financial implications.

Note most of the coloured bars are to the left of the 50% percentile line meaning most of Bull B’s EBVs are below average. The only ones above are the Rib and Rump EBVs. Most of the genetic relationships displayed by Bull B are normal except for the two calving ease traits, which are not displaying their normal antagonism. Both yellow 11

ANGUS GROUP BREEDPLAN CODE OF PRACTICE The Angus Group Breedplan COP has been developed to assist in ensuring commercial bull buyers and Angus Semen users have access to the best information for their breeding and buying decisions. It is offered as a voluntary code of practice and designed to encourage high standards of on-farm performance recording and to accurately report Angus Group Breedplan EBVs in advertising and marketing of Angus Cattle.

OSH Every effort will be taken by the vendors, their staff and assistants, both on the day of the sale as well as on any other visits of inspection, to ensure the safety of intending buyers and visitors. However we wish to advise that this is a farm run under normal management conditions and certain dangers exist in relation to livestock and their environment. Visitors should take care to ensure their personal safety.

GENETIC DEFECTS IN ANGUS ARTHROGRYPOSIS MULTIPLEX (AM), NEUROPATHIC HYDROCEPHALUS (NH) & CONTRACTURAL ARACHNODACTYLY (CA) & DEVELOPMENTAL DUPLICATION (DD) AM, NH and CA are simple recessive gene defects, caused by the presence of a single pair of inherited genes. The red gene in Angus cattle is a common example of recessive inheritance – the gene must be present on both sides of the pedigree for full expression. If a carrier sire and a carrier dam are mated, 25% of the progeny will be clear of the defect, 50% will be carriers, and 25% will be affected. A DNA test has been developed to identify carrier animals so these defects can be eliminated from the breed. After such DNA testing, you will be given one of two results; AMF, NHF, CAF or DDC = tested free of the gene AMC, NHC, CAC or DDC = tested carriers of the defect But, to assist with the identification of carrier animals (prior to DNA testing) a ‘probability test’ has been developed - using updated test results and animals’ pedigrees, known as Geneprob. Geneprob will identify ‘at risk’ animals in the breed database and assign them a status for AMS, NHS or CAS as follows; AMFU, NHFU, DDFU and/or CAFU = free by pedigree inference, untested AMS, NHS%, DDS% and/or CAS% = a suspected carrier (% = level of suspicion) but un-tested. Requires testing to validate true status. These GeneProb analysis tests are performed every seven days. Genotyping for these mutations should, with 100% accuracy, expedite elimination of these genes from the Angus population. If you are unsure of any aspect of these genetic defects please enquire of your bull supplier or ring the NZ Angus Association on 06 3234484. R N Wylie, General Manager, Angus New Zealand Inc.

13

EBVS EXPLAINED Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) are predictions of an animal’s genetic merit, based on available performance data on the individual and its relatives. In the calculation of EBVs, the performance of individual animals within a contemporary group is directly compared to the average of other animals in that group. A contemporary group consists of animals of the same sex and age class within a herd, run under the same management conditions and treated equally. Indirect comparisons are made between animals reared in different contemporary groups, through the use of pedigree links between the groups. With the widespread use of artificial breeding and trading of genetics among seedstock herds, an extensive network of pedigree links has been established throughout the Angus breed. These pedigree links enable the adjustment for environmental differences between herds, years and management groups. This allows comparisons between animals from totally different environments and management conditions. EBVs are expressed in the units of measurement for each particular trait. They are shown as +ive or -ive differences from the breed base. For example, a bull with an EBV of +50 kg for 600-Day Wt is estimated to have genetic merit 50 kg above the breed base of 0 kg. Since the breed base is set to a historical benchmark, the average EBVs of animals in each year drop has changed over time, as a result of genetic progress within the breed.

14

While EBVs provide the best basis for the comparison of the genetic merit of animals, reared in different environments and management conditions, they can at present only be used to compare animals within the same breed. The EBVs for different breeds have different bases and are subject to different rates of change over time. CONSEQUENTLY, AT PRESENT, ANGUS GROUP BREEDPLAN EBVS CANNOT BE VALIDLY COMPARED WITH EBVS OF ANY OTHER BREED. The absolute value if any EBV is not critical, but rather the differences in EBVs between animals. Particular animals should be viewed as being “above breed average”, for a particular trait, only if their EBVs are better than the average EBVs of all animals born in their year drop. A useful “benchmark” is the average EBVs for calves born in 2006 (i.e. “V” drop), shown below. EBVs are published for a range of traits covering fertility, calving ease, maternal performance, growth and carcase merit. When using EBVs to assist in selection decisions, it is important to achieve a balance between the different groups of traits and to place emphasis on those traits that are important to your herd, your markets, and your environment. One of the advantages of having a comprehensive range of EBVs is that you can avoid extremes, in particular traits and select for animals with balanced overall performance.

15

EBVS EXPLAINED ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES (EBVS) USED IN THE KAKAHU CATALOGUE EBV’s for the growth traits are calculated in kilos. The EBV is the best estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for each recorded trait.

ACCURACIES These are presented with every EBV and give an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher the accuracy, the more reliable the EBV’s and the less likelihood of change in those EBV’s.

CALVING EASE TRAITS DIR: Calving ease (DIR) EBVs are estimates of genetic differences among animals in the ability of their calves from two-year-old heifers to be born unassisted. DTRS: Calving Ease (DTRS) EBVs are estimates of genetic differences in the ability of a sire’s daughters to calve at 2 years of age without assistance. The EBVs are reported as differences in the percentage of unassisted calvings. The higher (more +ive) the better. GL: Gestation Length-estimates of genetic differences among animals in the number of days from the date of conception until the calf birth date. The lower (more -ive) the better. 16

BW: estimates of the genetic differences between animals, in kg, of calf birth weight. This is the biggest contributing factor causing calving difficulty in heifers.

FERTILITY DC: Days to calving are estimates of genetic differences among animals in female fertility, expressed as the number of days from the start of the joining period until subsequent calving. Females with shorter DCs tend to cycle earlier and conceive earlier. They also tend to attain puberty at a younger age as heifers. SS: Scrotal Size is estimates of the genetic differences among animals in scrotal circumference at 400 days of age. Larger are generally more favourable.

GROWTH TRAITS 200-Day Weight EBV: estimates of the genetic differences among animals in weight at 200 days of age. Important for breeders who sell weaners. Generally the larger are the more favourable. 400-Day weight EBV: estimates of the genetic differences among animals in weight at 400 days of age. Important for breeders selling yearlings. Generally the larger are the more favourable. 600-Day weight EBV: estimates of the genetic differences among animals in weight at 600 days of age.

MATERNAL Milk EBV: estimates of genetic differences among animals in milk production potential, expressed through variation in calf growth performance. MWT: estimates of the genetic differences among animals in cow weight at 5 years of age. Smaller or moderate Mature Cow Weights are more favourable. E.g. a bull with an EBV of +50kg would be expected to produce daughters with lighter mature weights and lower feed requirements than a bull with an EBV of +80kg.

CARCASE TRAITS CW: Carcase weights are estimates of the genetic differences among animals in hot standard carcase weight at 750 days of age. EMA: estimates of the genetic differences among animals in eye muscle area at 12-13th rib site in a 400 kg carcase. P8: estimates of the genetic differences among animals in fat depth of rump in a 400 kg carcase. Rib: estimates of the genetic differences among animals in fat depth of rib in a 400 kg carcase. The more positive these two are the more subcutaneous fat and earlier maturity, which will suit some breeders. The less positive the figure indicates a leaner bull, which will produce leaner and higher yielding carcases. RBY: Retail Beef Yield estimates the genetic differences among animals in percentage retail beef yield in a 400kg carcase.

IMF: estimates of genetic differences among animals in percentage intramuscular fat (marbling) at 12-13th rib site in a 400kg carcase.

SELECTION INDICES SELF-REPLACING INDEX ($): Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd (self replacing herd run in a temperate environment) in which some females are retained for breeding and surplus females, along with all males, are slaughtered. Steers are assumed marketed at 525 kg live weight (280 kg carcase weight) by 16 months of age. The Index is expected to favour production of a cow herd with excellent reproductive efficiency, rearing progeny with moderate to high growth rates and high yielding carcasses. ANGUS PURE INDEX ($): This Index is similar to the Self Replacing Index but will tend to highlight higher marbling sires. NUMBER OF CALVES PER COW: In the Kakahu catalogue, this indicates the number of times mated to the number of weaned calves. All our females are mated to calve as 2 year olds. We have an approximate dry rate of 8% annually for heifers. These dry animals are not retained in the herd.

17

BVD (BOVINE VIRAL DIARRHOEA) KAKAHU HAS HAD A PROGRAMME TO ERADICATE BVD SINCE 1998

- - - - -

All young stock is vaccinated twice as advised by our vets. Cows are vaccinated annually. SALE BULLS ARE BLOOD TESTED ANNUALLY FOR CARRIERS. When a bull arrives at his new home he is BVD free. The purchaser should be aware that THE BULL WILL NEED A VACCINATION EVERY YEAR TO KEEP HIM CLEAR, as the bull can catch BVD from a carrier cow in the herd and transmit it to the other cows. This will happen only if the vaccination is lapsed.

Downloaded from www.controlBvd.org.nz “The BVD virus remains in the herd by two methods: (i) direct transmission between animals through physical contact and, (ii) virus invading the foetus in a pregnant cow. The latter method gives rise to newborn calves that either develop poorly and die relatively young or grow up apparently normal but become lifelong shedders known as “persistently infected”, or “PI” cattle. These carrier animals act as a major source of infection for other animals. EFFECTS IN ADULT CATTLE: - Reduced conception rates - Increased numbers of long returns - Spread out calving pattern

18

All body fluids including saliva, tears, nasal discharge, semen, urine and faeces contain the virus. Generally, close contact with other animals is required for transmission, but it has been observed that air droplets containing the virus can be transmitted up to 8m and infect cows across the fence. The time from infection to the development of clinical signs is about 1-3 weeks. Luckily, the virus only survives for a short time in the environment.

- High non-pregnancy rates - Abortions; fresh or mummified - High empty at calving rates

- Calf losses around calving from premature births, weak/dummy calves..

ANGUSPURE ENDORSED BULLS AngusPure continues to endorse bulls for sale that are in the top 40% of the breed for AngusPure index. This index gives commercial farmers confidence that by using this selection tool, bulls are most likely to leave progeny with superior carcase quality and at the same time achieve desirable outcomes for self replacing herds, as the AngusPure index still rewards cattle with strong maternal attributes like calving ease, scrotal and growth, along with carcase weight. To qualify for the ‘A’ endorsement, bulls must meet a minimum AngusPure index of +$133. These bulls will be => +$133 for AngusPure index.

EXTRA ANGUSPURE ENDORSEMENT FOR MARBLING: In addition to the ‘A’, and to assist bull buyers who wish to select for more marbling we are rewarding those animals that are in the top 50% of the breed for AngusPure index and who also have their marbling EBV (IMF) in the top 25% as well. These bulls will be awarded an ‘A+’ endorsement. Marbling is one of the very highest eating quality attributes and is necessary in order to meet some of the highest premium requirements for our new program, AngusPure Special Reserve. To qualify for the ‘A+’ endorsement, bulls must meet a minimum AngusPure index of +$147. They must also meet the minimum marbling requirement of +1.6 for IMF These bulls will be => +$147 for AngusPure index and => + 1.6 for IMF EBV. AngusPure recognises the need to lift the amount of marbling in our New Zealand cow genetics, in order to fill the requirements of consumers going forward. Marbling has two critical components; genetics and feeding. Feeding on a rising plane of nutrition is vital but without the genetics these attributes will not be able to express themselves

To qualify for the AngusPure premiums all steers and heifers must be sired by a registered Angus or PRAC Angus bull.
