REFLECTION ON PRACTICE Capstone I: Form + Function
Since the beginning of the project, I wanted to pick something more abstract but personal to package. I started with the broad concept of missing “Stability, then I categoried the different aspects of stability into a scale from tangible to abstract.

I ended up going with my second idea about selfconfidence. I think it is a very personal but universal issue that have a lot of potential to be packaged right. I started thinking about the depth, different layers, and sections of inner confidence.
The most influencial reference I used on this project was “Art made from books”.
Although that is not what my package was made of, the
depth and movement inside
the “box” was highly inspired by the different approach of creating depth in the book.

I started looking at packaging examples
that have interesting forms and concepts. I did not think much about what kind of
form I want to make but was just focusing on getting a lot of different ideas.
After finalizing my concept, I started
looking at more relevent minimalist for the outside of the packaging. It was useful for
thinking about “Confident san serif type in relationship with simple background.

My final mockup was pretty close
to my final product since I already know how I’d like to divide each
aspects of confidence. I spent a lot of time visualizing the effects and
displaying them through the forms each paper divider create.
What I miscalculated was forgetting the thickness of the real package and not knowing what to do to
make it open and close smoothy as the paperthin mock up.
It took me a long time to decide the colorscheme I want to use to showcase confidence. Instead of the Bold colors I originally wanted, I ended up picking a more subtle but still colorful palette below.
I experimented with lasercut for the first
time. It took multiple tries to get the font
and text weight right. confidence

During the final critique, I got a
lot of positive feedbacks on my
concept and execuation. Some of the contructive criticisms include the effectiveness of the color
choices, scale of the letters and
pharses, whether or not to include the poem in the middle of the spine. I agreed to all these
concerns. If I had more time to
rethink and remake the product, I would’ve spent more time on
exploring ways to incorporate the poem into the dividers and be
more mysterious and interactive. In terms of colors, I think it is an extremely subjective area, and
what I feel confident on might not align with others. I do wish I
spent more time on exploring the placement of each color to make
them less confusing when people
open the package. It would be nice for it to serve like a journey and
using color to guide viewers’ eyes.
