Welcome to the this months installment of WORKIN CLASS HEROES, We finally did it, after many months of negotiating and late night phone calls, We managed to lock ASTEK down, and like me, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the result. ASTEK became involved in the graffiti scene during the late 80’s; being talented in art he was drawn to the speed and skill of the spray can and the sheer style of the letters and characters. He began to write ASTEK at the age of twelve and was well known around South London as a bus-bomber, but yearned to paint pieces. He painted a few but found it hard to come by paint, although many of you will still remember him for his work in the late 80s. ASTEK really started to make a name for himself in 1995 with the help of the re-birth of The Woolwich Dockyard hall of fame. By 1998 he was known as one of London’s finest, working and painting alongside the artists who first inspired him. In 2000 ASTEK was voted London’s best wall painter on graffiti site location 12. The styles he paints are so diverse and have been perfected over years, He paints wildstyle, 2D, 3D and also characters plus taken part in large graffiti jams up and down this country and in Ireland and Belgium. More recently ASTEK has transformed his work on to canvas and taken part in several exhibitions in London and Manchester: mainly with the ‘they made me do it collective’. Currently ASTEK is working on his own graffiti event JAM EM IN’ which started last year; it was a great day involving 28 writers painting a large wall in East London. Alongside that he is working on large scale murals in and around London with Signal project. For me now I want to move on to being a respected as a artist and carry on pushing the productions and the British graffiti scene. ASTEK has finally decided to put together his own website www.astekz.com. So for the first time you can view the works and styles of London’s most recognised graffiti artist aswell as purchase Prints and Canvasses, so make sure you check. Meanwhile sit back and enjoy the London styles of ASTEK. Anyone who wants to contribute, send your photo’s to LEE FRAMER, Po Box 5307, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, SS1 1TW or mail me at leeframer@hotmail.com Peace. We GHOST.

As you know, our aim here at ATM, is to illustrate the range and quality of artists we have here in the UK. So this month in WORKIN CLASS HEROES we focus on ROUGH and trust me, It doesn’t get much rougher than this... ROUGH is one of the most prolific artists within the UK scene today. With graphic design now playing a major part in his life, he still manages to keep the street level profile ticking over with a constant array of fresh wall productions, whilst fully integrating the 'graf' styles with his design work. He and fellow creative entrepreneur TiMiD are currently putting the finishing touches to Rigidmouth 2, the follow up to their critically acclaimed first outing into the World of publishing. New Qee toys are in production for Hong Kong toy manufacturer Toy2R, an installation show with ROUGH, STORMIE and 1MOR is planned for October in the 7 Dials area and ROUGH is booked in to show his amazing artworked collection of aeroplane motion sickness bags at ‘Best’, next February. All this and he still finds time to make music with JUICE 126 and JOSEPH, as leftfield hip hop collective - ‘REPTILES’, with their brand new Year of the Monkey EP out now on free download at liquidplaythings.com. Keep your eyes, ears, and minds open... LINKS - www.roughe.com · www.liquidplaythings.com · www.thechipfactory.co.uk

For this months installment of WORKIN CLASS HEROES, ATM dialled 118-118 and got through to the line manned by the notorious MR BUSK, trust me he don’t fuck around when it comes to spreading butter ability. Three Decade’s deep in the game, BUSK has clocked up some hefty international mileage, hooked up with some of the best plus runs with the They Made Me Do It and Signal Project collectives and to top it off founded a bunch of notorious pioneers from the UK that you just might have heard of called THIRD DECADE. The styles he paints are so diverse and have been perfected over years, He paints Organic, Mechanic, 2D, 3D and also characters plus taken part in large graffiti jams up and down this country. More recently BUSK has been transforming his work on to canvas and taken part in several exhibitions in London with the ‘they made me do it collective’. Alongside that he just completed work on large scale mural in Kilburn London alongside SNUG, TIZER, BLEACH and DANE with ‘signal project ’. Far and above all the economics, his main motivation is inventive expansion as an artist and to continue to take the U.K graffiti movement to the next level, there is absolutely no room for style paralysis, so keep your eyes on the walls and your ears to the streets... Make sure you catch us next time round where we'll be turning up the heat with even more UK damage. It’s been a while and for you the reader we hope its been well worth the wait. As ya’ll know more and more foreign mags continue to flood the market and its become more apparent, that the UK falls by the wayside when it comes to promoting our writers. The concept behind this issue of WORKIN CLASS HEROES, is to provide documentation from the whole spectrum of the UK scene, as far to much goes by unrecognised and fails to get the attention of its well deserved audience. OK enough rambling, so sit back relax and enjoy some fresh ass productions for some of the UK’s finest: ASTEK, INSA, ROUGH, FRAME, RMER and HOAX to name but a few... Make sure you catch us next time round where we'll be reporting to you live from NYC’s east village with some hot female action, courtesy of the IN A GIRL’S WORLD exhibition, trust me its gonna be dangerous. If you know UK graffiti I suspect you’ve heard of INSA. He’s been known on the scene for most of this century and has been making a mess (as he puts it) for much longer. Recognised for his slick 3D pieces and evil tear drop throw-up - INSA has recently reinvented his craft by replacing his tag with the potent image of a high-heel. Exploring the idea of graffiti as an obsession and applying his twisting drawings of interlocking ladies curves to many objects of desire, INSA has had a couple of sell out shows in the UK and has recently returned from a very well received solo show in NYC. This latest chapter of work is called ‘‘GRAFFITI FETISH ’’ enjoy… If you wanna see more INSA go to www.insaland.com, peace! photos: EMMA SLATER Anyone who wants to contribute to WORKIN CLASS HEROES e-mail me at leeframer@hotmail.com. YO... This month we report live from the SLEEPING GIANTS Paint Jam in Brighton, which was by far the largest graff event the U.K. has seen to date, seeing over 200 artists flex their spraycan skills... SEVER, REVOK & RIME came out to represent the City of Angels, The Montana Writer Team confirmed their attendance in the form of CAN2, ATOM, SMASH & KENT. Old school legend BLADE came out of retirement and made sure his generation was in full effect, put that along with some hot U.K. talent, made this event special, trust me this jam was real live... /// Anyone who wants to contribute to WORKIN CLASS HEROES, send your photo’s to LEE FRAMER, Po Box 5307, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, SS1 1TW or mail me at leeframer@hotmail.com Peace. // WORKIN CLASS HEROES /// DARING TO PUSH THE BOUNDARIES:

»

«

To bring his name into harmony, Germany's 3D-virtuoso DAIM prefers to take graffiti in the UNUSUAL direction. It seems as if his four letters jump off the walls, explode onto canvases, explore natural environments, and come to life as sculptures. In this printed gallery, DAIM's versatile techniques and range of artistic motifs become clear: the strange glances of exotic fishes, a gas mask viewed from different angles, complex abstractions of his name, acrylics here, drawings there, all executed with a master's control of color, light and shadow. When asked if he departs from traditional graffiti ideas, he answers: My aim is to show new sides of graffiti art. There will always be writers who paint illegally, but the number of graffiti artists who use new media and styles is steadily increasing. So we have new ideas alongside the old ones. Of course some people don't appreciate his PUSHING-THEBOUNDARIES , but DAIM has no reservations about it: Graffiti must be distinctive. For me it's essential to try new things without losing sight of the basics. Studying fine art in Switzerland provided a great opportunity for DAIM to reconsider his interests. Beside of working with the can, he reinvented his name using an orchestra of new techniques, such as etchings, linoleum prints, and sculptures of wood and concrete. DAIM never had any real role models or mentors. He likes the work of van Gogh's paintings or Frank Gehry's architecture, but he finds his main inspiration within nature: Even though advertisement, cartoons, and genres like pop-art are reflected by graffiti, every kind of shape, colour, and pattern begins in nature. Just keep your eyes open! Creativity and determination allowed DAIM to get in contact with other writers early in his career. He had a hand in painting the tallest graffiti in the world, commemorated in the Guinness Book of Records. A member of international artist collectives such as FX, FBI, SUK, and GBF, he has become one of the most famous and sought-after graffiti artists in the world. He is invited to participate in art shows and exhibitions around the world and has collectors in Japan, New Zealand, Australia, and the United States, as well as in Europe. DAIM attributes his success to his collaboration with other artists. All the unique contributions in graffiti art assure him in establishing this young and energetic movement in the international art world. In 1999 DAIM co-founded the artist association GETTING-UP . They organized the very successful annual URBAN DISCIPLINE exhibitions. In 2000, 2001 and 2002 international graffiti artists presented their work to a wide public audience in Hamburg Germany. No one knows what to expect from graffiti in the future, but DAIM is excited about this uncertainty too. /// For more info on DAIM: check WWW.DAIM.ORG. SKORE’s contribution to the UK graffiti scene is immeasurable. For the past 20 years, his output has been a staple part of the subculture, participating in every aspect of the art-form. His development of lettering styles, combined with his technical skill and original flair has kept him as a primary influence for many graffiti writers worldwide. This month we follow SKORE around the globe on his ADIDAS x FOOTLOCKER x END II END PROJECT world tour. SKORE alongside DRAX are currently creating the definitive archive of London's graffiti history as a personal project, due for completion sometime soon. HIP HOP Festival 2007 ///Photography ©Josh Ford (www.renderghost.co.uk) /// This time round we go south and report live from BRIGHTON. 2 events went down this month the BRIGHTON HIP HOP FESTIVAL and FRIEZEBOX. The only word to describe the BHFF event is DRAMA. For those of ya’ll that didn’t attend a whole heap of ISHT went down. Internal politics between Brighton Crews meant that none of them painted on the day. 3 days later the entire wall was dogged. Anyway politics aside, lets go with the positive, New York legend DURO CIA was flown in especially for the event to bless us with an old school classic and mixed it up with the likes of BUSK, CAZN, PRYME, RHIZE amongst others. Next up we flip over to FRIEZEBOX, which is a unique Public Art installation taking place throughout the festival. An enormous wooden box was erected outside the Brighton Central Library and painted rapid fire style, its an evolving and constantly changing installation. The time artists have on the box is limited to just a few days, so you’ll need to be quick and visit often to witness the complete set!. /// Anyone who wants to contribute to WORKIN CLASS HEROES, send your photo’s to framer@framerase.co.uk /// Peas. /// SIT BACK RELAX HISTORY CLASS IS IN SESSION. This time round we kick it with KELZO one of the U.K’s true Vets, For those that don’t know the half, KELZO first got into graff when Hip Hop culture first hit Britain back in 84. Around 85 - 86 buses were the main source of hits. Between 92 - 98 he could be regularly found painting the notorious OLD HULME AREA described by some, as the worst inner city ghetto in western europe situated between the City Centre and Moss side. Next up was take it global with frequent visits to all of Europe’s major cities chuck in a few trips Stateside, Lets just say KELZO really put the UK on the map. No tricks in 06 as he opened the infamous STUDIO 159 in Manchester which saw ROCK STEADY CREW’S, PRINCE KEN SWIFT turn up last summer whilst touring the uk. OBJECTS OF DESIRE. When does a desire become a fetish? What is the relationship between sex and selling? These questions and more will be explored in BUY MY LOVE, an exhibition by UK graff legend INSA currently on display Glasgow. London-based artist INSA straddles the worlds of commercial art and underground expression. He started out as a graffiti artist but also trained at Goldsmiths. His work explores how branding and sexual desire interact, and despite this (or because of it) he has been commissioned by the likes of Nike and Kangol. Shoes feature prominently in INSA’s work. A canvas features an arched, bare foot alongside another encased in the distinctive shapes of an Air Max trainer. His distinctive motif of worm-like legs in high heels adorns stilettos, walls and PVC corsets. Like the human body parts he paints, INSA’s artworks have themselves become objects of desire and highly collectable. The Recoat exhibition features a full-wall mural as well as limited-edition prints on stretch PVC. You can catch the BUY MY LOVE exhibition at Recoat Gallery. /// MEETING OF STYLES LONDON. Back in June history was made as we were blessed with the first ever London Meeting of styles hosted by

EndOfTheLine. Over 30 artists’ pitted side by side amongst strangers, friends and fellow graffers, blessed the concrete and steel of the roof top spot, arguably the greatest Hall Of Fame London has ever seen. The main event was the monumental “London’s Burning” piece, painted on the Wall of The Village Underground. It was like a cosmic fusion of anarchy and dystopia juxtaposed with sun light colors that shimmered on one of the warmest mid days of this year. The studios off Great Eastern Street, An Island of graffiti, sitting defiantly amongst the Easts gallery and trendy quarter is surely the best rooftop the city has to offer. With four tube carriages above the arches, this is a graffiti artist’s wet dream, a playground for paint. During EndOfTheLine’s off the cuff take over of the Hall of Fame, a lucky few bore witness to the freestyle session from London’s finest graffiti artists, while DJ’s spun old skool Hip-Hop and Funk till the twilight hours. This was THE outdoor shindig of the summer so far. Definitely the grandest freestyle fusion you would have ever wanted to experience. Many whispers suggest there’s more body blowing parties to come. Keep your ears pinned back for what will truly be an epic summer of exhibitions, impromptu parties and late night drinking sessions. ///
