Meet the Rosners! This JCC family have been members since they moved to Wynnewood in 2014. That same year their wonderful daughter Blake attended Camp KEF and had a fantastic time. Meredith (Mom) is activity involved in the Robert J. Wilf PTO and helps organize fundraiser events for the PreSchool such as bake sales. The family also enjoys working out in the J's fitness center, attending the J's holiday events (such as Hanukkah Extravaganza and Purim parties), and is looking forward to swimming at the J Swim Club when it opens this May. Meredith is also super excited about our Designer Bag Bingo and is hoping to win a stylish new bag! With summer quickly approaching, the Rosners are also looking forward to spending a lot of time at the Jersey Shore. We asked them what their favorite bedtime book was and they told us that they are huge fans of Morris the Moose, Sammy the Seal and any thing by Dr. Seuss! The Rosener are apart of the JCC family where everyone shares wonderful experiences and opportunities to make new friends.

President's Letter BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Friends,

President Jo Ann Malmud

As my tenure as President of the Board of Directors comes to an end June 1, I find my thoughts turn, not to the challenges we faced, but rather how well we faced those challenges.

1st Vice President Cindy Ben Hamo 2nd Vice President Marc Swarbrick

We have accomplished a great deal over the last three years. We have an extraordinary outdoor pool, a thriving pre-school, an enriching after school program and an outstanding day camp. Bingo, Purim and Hanukkah Celebrations, Maccabi, JDays and JPlay, gymnastics, soccer and the ever popular Dollar Dog Night around the pool, are only a few of the JCC offerings. The truth is, these programs and services could be offered anywhere. What makes them special, what makes them come alive are people. It is people who create the spirit and who are the soul of our JCC. It’s the smiles and laughter, the caring members, the dedicated staff and the committed Board of Directors that bring life to the JCC. It’s our members sitting in the back lobby schmoozing and families sitting in the front lobby enjoying Nana’s offerings. Pre-school parades through the halls and our “circus” stars swinging on a trapeze. It’s being able to do that 10th pull-up in the Fitness Center or that first somersault in the gym. It’s the caring, supportive environment that allows everyone to succeed at their own pace. The J is a home away from home for so many. During my tenure, I have met and worked with so many wonderful people. It has been a privilege and honor to serve the JCC for the last three years.

Warm regards,

Jo Ann Malmud jomalmud@phillyjcc.com

OUR APPROACH: Creative Curriculum®

• •

This curriculum identifies goals and objectives in four areas of development including Social/Emotional, Physical, Cognitive and Language. Through the activities we plan and the way we organize the classroom, select toys and materials, plan the daily schedule, communicate with children and assess progress, we seek to accomplish the goals of our curriculum and give your child a successful start in school.

The number seven has extraordinary power in Jewish thought and practice. Because of its deep roots in Jewish tradition, the word Sheva, seven, was chosen as the name of our early childhood education initiative. The seven core elements of Sheva are firmly rooted in the latest research in child development.

Support There's Something About this Place When you walk through the doors of the J you might see a preschool class making their way to our gym for play time; a group of members gathered around Nana's Café in the lobby chatting with Gladys, or you might hear a couple of senior adults bidding each other “Shabbat Shalom” before parting ways on a Friday afternoon. You can set your watch to the arrival of the basketball guys who come to play a quick game of pick-up during their lunch break each day. Soon after stepping through our doors you'll be on a first name basis with our staff and come to realize the JCC feels a lot like home. The J is the heart of the community and we strive to transcend all differences and provide programs for everyone. We are an independent non-profit organization and, in spite of the revenue we receive from membership fees, tuition and program fees, it is not enough to cover the cost of operating our center. We rely on the generosity of businesses, funding organizations and individuals like you to help meet our budget each year. We strive to make our programs accessible to everyone and provide needs based financial assistance to families in our community.

Tribute Bricks | Single: $75; Double: $150 - We will install a brick on our walkway engraved with your personal message to commemorate a special occasion, celebration or memory of a loved one.

Tribute Cards | $10/card

Beautifully designed by Philadelphia artist Mordechai Rosenstein, these are a thoughtful, affordable way to honor special occasions, including B’nai Mitzvah, birthdays and anniversaries or to honor the loss of a loved one.

Get Involved Corporate Partnership & Event Sponsorship - Whether your goal is to support a specific JCC program or event, or develop an ongoing relationship with all or part of our constituency, we can structure a strategy that will satisfy your philanthropic and marketing goals. In kind donations of goods and services are also welcome and are recognized at the sponsorship level commensurate to their cash value. Planned Gifts- Ensuring a legacy is a personal pledge of faith – a commitment to keep the doors of the JCC open for future generations. While outright gifts such as cash and stock are vital to our success, you can also support the JCC by making a planned gift as part of your overall financial and/or estate planning. Immediate benefits to you might include tax savings and the satisfaction of knowing that your personal charitable goals will be met. Please make us aware of your planned giving intentions so that we can acknowledge you today. Designated Gifts & Naming Opportunities- Your gift may be designated to benefit a specific program or area within the JCC. This enables you to target your gift to programs or projects that are important to you or to a loved one, as a gift in-memory or in-honor. Some areas you might be interested in targeting include our pool, sports fields or playground, group fitness studio or areas within the Robert J. Wilf Preschool & Kindergarten. Employer Matched Donations- As a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization, Kaiserman JCC is eligible to receive employer matched donations. We will happily acknowledge both you and your employer for donations made through your company’s matching gift program. Check to see if your employer participates! Volunteer- Individuals and groups can help with special events, beautifying our campus and more! Let us match your interest to a project that will make a real difference in our community. We also welcome you to contribute to the wellbeing of our center by sitting on a JCC committee or task force.

Make Your Tax Dollars Do Good Invest in a child's future PA Education Tax Credit Program: PA Education Tax Credit Program The Foundation for Jewish Day Schools was created by the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia in partnership with six local day schools, and is an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The Foundation provides needs-based scholarships to students from lower and middle-income families attending the six day schools and dozens of pre-schools in the Greater Philadelphia area, including the Kaiserman JCC’s Robert J. Wilf Preschool & Kindergarten. What is the EITC Program? Corporations (both “C” and “S”) can significantly reduce their PA state tax liability by receiving tax credits for donations to state-approved scholarship organizations such as the Foundation for Jewish Day Schools of Greater Philadelphia. Owners of sub-chapter S corporations and other small and medium-sized businesses that pay personal income tax on PA business income can fully participate in the program as well. Participants in the EITC program may receive a tax credit equal to 100% of the first $10,000 contributed and up to 90% of the remaining amount contributed up to a maximum credit of $150,000 annually. If a corporation or business owner chooses to designate its donation for scholarship assistance to a specific school, such as the Robert J. Wilf Preschool & Kindergarten, it can do so in the letter that will accompany its check to the Foundation for Jewish Day Schools of Greater Philadelphia.

HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS Shabbat: The Jewish day of rest begins at sundown on Friday evening and ends at twilight on Saturday evening. It is a time to enjoy spiritual contemplation, the company of family members, nature and relaxation. It is an opportunity to feel renewed and ready for the coming week. Rosh Hashanah: The Jewish New Year begins the 10-day period known as the High Holidays, the Days of Awe. We use this time to think about the past year and resolve to improve what needs improvement in the coming year. The blowing of the shofar (ram’s horn) serves as a wake-up call to begin the process. Yom Kippur: The Day of Atonement occurs on the 10th (last) day of the High Holidays. It is a day of fasting, prayer, inner contemplation and a collective confession of sins. It is also a day of optimism, full of the promise of forgiveness and improvement of our behavior in the coming year.

Shemini Atzeret: The eighth day of Sukkot, a day of solemn assembly, is a holiday on which prayers for rain are recited. A memorial service is also held. Simchat Torah: Simchat Torah is associated with Sukkot, but is an independent, joyous holiday. On Simchat Torah, the cycle of reading from the Torah ends and begins again. In every synagogue, the Torah scrolls are taken out and carried around in processions.

Purim: Purim is one of the most joyous and fun holidays on the Jewish calendar. It commemorates a time when the Jewish people, living in Persia, were saved from the wicked tyrant Haman by Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai, as told in the Book of Esther (Megillat Esther). Purim merriments include carnivals, costumes, gifts of food and reading the story in the synagogue. Passover: Passover, or Pesach in Hebrew, is an eight-day spring holiday that celebrates the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt. The main tradition of Passover is the Seder, the word Seder means, “order” and this ritual meal is carefully choreographed and held on the first two evenings of the holiday (in Israel, and for most Reform Jews, there’s only one seder, on the first night). The Seder is designed to provide an opportunity for telling the story of how the Jewish People were freed from slavery and given the gift of the Torah. Jewish law prohibits eating anything that is leavened (hametz) during the Passover holiday Shavuot: Shavuot, which means the “Festival of Weeks” occurs seven weeks after Passover. It is a three-fold celebration that commemorates the receiving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, the harvesting of wheat in the land of Israel, and the ripening of the first fruits in Jerusalem. On Shavuot the slaves who left Egypt were made into free people by the receiving of the Ten Commandments.

Kaiserman JCC • Spring ‘16/Summer ‘16

Sukkot: Preparations for Sukkot begin right after Yom Kippur with the building of the sukkah, a temporary dwelling. This harvest holiday emphasizes the values of hospitality, the rewards of work and our trust in G-d. It reminds us of the period of time the Jews wandered in the desert after leaving Egypt.

Hanukkah: Hanukkah, meaning “dedication” in Hebrew, is the joyous eight-day celebration during which the Jews commemorate the victory of the Macabees over the armies of Syria in 165 BCE and the miracle of the Temple’s oil lasting 8 days. Today, the celebration of Hanukah includes eating potato latkes and jelly doughnuts, playing Dreidel, and centers on the lighting of the Hanukiah.
