2012 Annual Report

Giving every child in Kansas the opportunity to reach their full potential

Letter From from the thePresident President Greetings! Again this year we are celebrating fantastic growth for Turn a Page. Touch a Mind.® (TAP-TAM). We welcomed 11 new sites throughout the state who will collectively give over 10,000 new, developmentally appropriate books to Kansas kids, bringing our total number of TAP-TAM sites to 58. This summer we also reached a milestone of distributing over 250,000 books to children 6 months to 5 years since 2004! The success of TAP-TAM and the impact that the program is having on Kansas children would not be possible without the over 275 pediatricians, family physicians, and other medical providers who spend time each day prescribing daily reading to families. During the annual conference call with the physician champions, we heard over and over again how much the participating TAP-TAM providers enjoy seeing little faces light up when they give a new book during an exam. When we get reports of children arriving at their well-check exam asking for their book, and young ones that can’t even talk yet pointing to the book cabinet until they have one in their hands, we know that we are creating a generation of readers! Of course, these physicians would not have books to give out if not for the generous gifts from donors all over Kansas who have continued to support TAP-TAM so that we can keep adding sites year after year. The Kansas Pediatric Foundation staff continues to seek funding for TAP-TAM sites, and have been pleased with the way communities have come together to start designated endowment funds that will buy books for local children far into the future. We will continue to work toward our goal of making sure all children in Kansas grow up with books, and we hope that you will continue to partner with us until we have accomplished that goal. The Kansas Pediatric Foundation also grew this year to include a KidLink-Children’s Mental Health Initiative endowment fund, which will support the KidLink website, www.kansaskidlink.org. For more information on KidLink, see page 5. Sincerely,

KidLink - Children’s Mental Health Initiative The Kansas Pediatric Foundation is pleased to announce the KidLink - Children’s Mental Health Initiative Endowment Fund. KidLink is a program developed by KAAP to increase the number of children detected and referred for appropriate mental health treatment. Gifts given to the KidLink Enodwment Fund will be used to maintain a database and website, www.kansaskidlink.org, which includes a complete directory of mental health resources in Kansas. This directory will be a comprehensive list of mental health professionals who provide services to children, broken down by county so that providers can easily refer patients for the appropriate treatment. The KidLink website will also include mental health resources for parents and families.

The largest program supported by the Kansas Pediatric Foundation is Turn a Page. Touch a Mind.® (TAP-TAM). TAP-TAM was developed in 2004 by the Kansas Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics to give children in Kansas the best possible start in school. TAP-TAM participating providers take time at each well-check visit for patients 6 months to 5 years to give a new, developmentally appropriate book, and encourage parents to read with their child daily. Fourteen peer-reviewed studies have found that when a the child’s physician, a trusted source of guidance, encourages reading, then gives families the tools (or books) to follow through, families will read together more often and have more books in the home. There are currently 58 TAP-TAM sites in 29 Kansas counties who will distribute almost 90,000 books to children 6 months to 5 years in 2012. Since 2004, TAP-TAM physicians and medical providers have given out over 250,000 books to children in Kansas! The impact from those books, and the literacy guidance from physicians across the state will last far into the future. Why do over 275 physicians and medical providers in Kansas take the time out of their busy day to promote literacy? Because they get to see every day how TAP-TAM gets children excited about books, and ready to learn to read. Here are  some of the things that TAP-TAM physicians are saying about the program: “We love TAP-TAM and the kids ask for the books when they come in!” - Amy Voelker, MD “It is as much fun for us as it is for the kids. You can tell if they are read to at home.” - Claudia McAllaster, MD “TAP-TAM fosters good relationships with families.” - Bonnie Cramer, MD “Patients and parents love it. It is a good way to discuss literacy.” - Christine Zambon, PAC “We use the books to assess development, the older kids look for words that they know.” - Kristen Stuppy, MD “It is neat seeing how kids react to getting a new book.” - Justin Overmiller, MD “We love the program. It is a chance to do something different with our families.” - Ronald C. Ferris, MD

There are still communities in Kansas that don’t have a TAP-TAM program yet. We need your help to continue to grow so that we can get books to more children! When you give a gift to the Kansas Pediatric Foundation, you can designate your gift to an existing TAP-TAM site, or start a fund for a new site in your community. Contact Mel Hudelson at mel.hudelson@kansasaap.org for more information on designating a gift or visit our website at www.kansaspediatricfoundation.org.
