As you may know, Ex-libris is small-sized designs with the names of the book owners and images on various subjects, that book lovers adhere to the inner cover of their books. In other words, they are the business cards or the title deeds of books. They identify the owners, glorify them and warns the borrower to return the book to its owner. The word itself literally means “it belongs to ...’s bookshelf” or “it belongs to ...’s library.” Although it was born out of a graphical need, they are unique works of art with aesthetic concerns. It brings art into the hands of people and even inside the books; and it evokes the art’s captivating warmth. In partnership between the Eastern Mediterranean University in North Cyprus and University of Silesia in Poland, The International Ex-libris Competition was realized thanks to the great efforts by Prof. Dr. Senih Çavuşoğlu and Prof. Dr. Krzysztof Marek Bak. An essential activity to boost the recognition and expansion of Ex-libris, the competition attracted more than 600 works from 35 countries. After a long and tedious evaluation, the jury selected 220 ex-libris works for exhibition. The selected works will also be featured in a catalogue. The jury also handed 4 awards and 8 honorable mentions. Anna Trojanowska from Poland won the Eastern Mediterranean University Rectorate’s Special First Place Award under the theme “Spirit.” Xingting Li from China won the University of Silesia Rectorate’s First Place Award because of his different composition and technical skills. The Second-Place Award went to Ozan Uyanık from Turkey because of his successful application of digital techniques in making a collage composition. Finally, the Third-Place Award went to Xin Yi Hong from China thanks to his impressive take on nature and effective use of colors. For the works that were selected for the exhibition, the jury paid special attention to the ability of the works to be unique and and at a level where the works can set the pace for the others. As the head of the jury, I would like to thank all the artists who participated in this international competition, and congratulate those who won the prizes.

Furthermore, I would like to express my gratitude for the jury members for their positive manners and smooth collaboration. I would also like to express my admiration for Prof. Dr. Senih Çavuşoğlu and Prof. Dr. Krzysztof Marek Bak who have organized this and numerous other international events and activities with great success. This event would not even be possible if it was not for the financial and moral support of Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam, the Rector of the Eastern Mediterranean University (Famagusta, N. Cyprus) and Prof. Dr. Andrej Kowalczyk, the Rector of the University of Silesia (Katowice, Poland). I am grateful for both for helping the art of Ex-libris be visible and gain international attraction. Prof. Dr. Martin R. Baeyens / Head of Jury Ex-libris Artist Professor, Belgium

Ex-libris Competitions not only provide artists/designers with a good platform to express their creativity, multiple ways of seeing and making through ex-libris art creation, but also enables the international community to appreciate the essence of different cultures and foster international communication, mutual respect as well as global harmony. This was the first event resulting from such a collaboration, which proved to be immensely successful. Eastern Mediterranean University, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Department of Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design organized this International Ex-libris Competition called “SPIRIT” in collaboration with University of Silesia, Faculty of Art and Education. Joint projects via collaboration are imperative for sharing experiences and resources. I would like to express my special thanks to the Rector of the Eastern Mediterranean University Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam, Rector of the University of the Silesia Prof. Dr.hab. Andrzej Kowalczyk, Head of the Jury-Prof Martin R. Baeyens (Belgium), and other members of the jury Prof. Hasip Pektaş (Turkey), Prof. Dr. Krzytof Marek Bak (Poland) who are considered as some of the leading figures of Ex-Libris art in the world for their great support and help for a each and every step of the organization to make it possible. Prof. Dr. Senih Çavuşoğlu (Chairman) Department of Visual Arts & Visual Communication Design Faculty of Communication and Media Studies Eastern Mediterranean University

The international exlibris competition “Spirit” is another artistic undertaking implemented jointly by the Eastern Mediterranean University in Famagusta and the University of Silesia in Katowice. It is especially pleasing, because this time we invited artists - creators of the bookplate from around the world to cooperate with us. The exlibris - despite the fact that its tradition dates back over 500 centuries, until the Renaissance - is still an attractive and current art form. In modern times, its greatest value is the close alignment to the other human. Showing the world through the prism of specific people known by name. It is important to show the individuality of people through the era of universal unification, talk about their passions, interests, and sometimes vices. The value of the bookplate comes from individual emotionality. The bookplate, although strictly aimed at other people, allows artists to fully express their creative personality. The essence of the best works is the author’s and recognizable style. This is what is expected today from a good exlibris - being a conscious, creative artistic statement, taking into account the historical traditions of the genre in terms of form and substantive aspects. I hope that we present such bookplates in this catalog and at post-competition exhibitions. “Spirit” is the first joint competition for an ex libris organized by our universities. I believe that the satisfactory effect and high quality of the submitted and presented works will allow us to continue the project in the coming years and to enter our competition permanently in the calendar of exlibris events in the world. Thank you to the authorities of our universities, friends from Northern Cyprus and the jury of the competition - working with you was a pleasure and an honor. Prof US dr hab Krzysztof Marek Bak Dean of The Faculty of Arts and Educational Science University of Silesia in Katowice
