n adaptive reuse project transforming an abandoned

steam plant into a brewery and water treatment facility. eugene’s historic millrace runs beneath the site, polluting

the nearby willamette river with untreated stormwater

and run off. producing a series of systems that allow landscape and building interaction, the project not only

collects and cleanses stormwater, but celebrates the millrace by uncovering and utiliZing the buried channel

in its original purpose: a power source for industry. the cogeneration facility provides a social and economic

hub to revive eugene’s downtown area as well as an educationally beautiful site for the public enjoyment of the natural ecology and urban nature.

the reel a center for the art of film

nspired by the shape of an old film camera, the reel

carves a dynamic journey out of the traditional “portland box”. the building becomes a stage as the visitors become

spectacle, the building’s promenade enhances the idea of movement throughout the space providing the building with a range of activity and a constant spinning of the film reel.

cting as a transition from the urban fabric to the

south park blocks, the mausoleum grows from the gardens, rising to meet the city as a garden wall. for

all those who come to rest in this place shall return

to the earth and sleep within the roots of the building. here time stands still and the whir of the city disappears. the dead shall bask in the light of day while the living journey pathways of light that heal and transform

grief into a celebration of memories and quiet solace. many who meander the passageways shall soon find that although this place was built for death, lush and blossoming life.

it supports a

water droplet creates subtle disturbance in a still

Sanctuary. a flowing pathway leads one to

the congregation space as one travels around the origin. this pathway is lit by guiding daylight that beckons the congregation further into the sanctuary.

intends

to

create a layered history of rome by updating forma urbis romae, the cartographic masterpiece of ancient roman topography published in lanciani.

1901

by archeologist rodolfo

the bulk of my research critically examines and updates

the map. the end result will highlight the continuity between ancient and modern and reveal how ancient buildings shape subsequent urban form. it will also show

the evolution of the archaic city of the hills into the

renaissance city of the flood plain and then the merging of the two into modern urban form.

eventually, the map will be republished as an interactive website that will also serve as a dynamic geo-database for scholars and the curious mind.
