Uncovering the mask

A closer look at the new Purple Masque Theatre

A modern theatre facility has taken the stage among West Stadium’s original 1920s stonework. The Purple Masque Theatre has moved from East Stadium, which it called home since 1974, to a completely renovated facility in West Stadium. The new student-centered theatre functions as an experimental theatre and learning environment. It is used for drama therapy, acting and directing, student showcases, play readings, workshops, Ebony Theatre performances and more.

Throughout the construction process, architects and builders took great care to maintain the integrity of the stadium’s original 1920s stonework. The Purple Masque Theatre is part of the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance in the College of Arts & Sciences. The $6 million relocation has made room for the university’s new Berney Family Welcome Center, which is under construction at East Stadium.
