Step 1: Find Support From Family and Friends A good support system is probably the most important factor in helping you deal with your depression. However, it is also very important that the people in your support system are positive in nature or it is possible they could bring you down even more. If you surround yourself with negative thinking people, their negativity is just going to rub off on you and you are sure to see little or no improvement in your mood. Alternatively, if you do your best to surround yourself with positive thinking people, it is inevitable their good nature will shine through and rub off on you as well. It's amazing how this works! Try it and I'm sure you will be pleasantly surprised. Step 2: Stay Healthy Getting an adequate amount of exercise and activity is also a big factor in treating your depression. However, this can be a difficult task for people suffering from depression because one of the symptoms of depression is a lack of motivation. Your best bet is to just start out slow. Take a couple of days a week and start going for a walk. If you have a dog or a friend that would be willing to go with you that is even better as it will help keep you motivated. Work your way up to four or five days a week if possible. If walking isn't your thing start off with a low impact activity such as tennis or swimming. It doesn't really matter what the activity is as long as it is something you can enjoy and it gets your heart rate moving. After doing this for a couple of weeks straight, you will be amazed at how much better you will start to feel. Step 3: Help Other People This is one of the steps that really works wonders. Start thinking about ways you can incorporate helping others into your life. This may be volunteering one day a month at the local Red Cross or Care and Share shelter or donating to a charity that interests you. Many people have found great comfort in helping people solve their problems in an area of expertise they may have. For example, if you are good at working on computers, go online and sign up for some forums relating to your expertise. Browse the forums whenever you have free time and answer peoples questions. Another good outlet is Yahoo Answers. Create an account for yourself and start browsing or searching through the questions being asked around your subject of expertise and provide them with good quality answers. You will find that people are very appreciative. Step 4: Have Some Fun Kind of like the exercise step above, this one can be a little hard to get started due to the nature of depression and being somewhat withdrawn. Again, just start out slow. Think about a couple of hobbies or activities you think you might enjoy. Learn what you can about them and start doing

them. Perhaps this could be bird watching, or hiking, or maybe even bowling. As you can tell, this step and the step regarding staying healthy can, and usually do, go hand in hand. Once again, if you can find someone else to do this with, it makes it much more enjoyable and easier to do. Step 5: Recognize When You Need More Help Finally, if you feel none of these steps are making a difference in your depression, it is critical that you recognize this and get some professional help. Start by talking to your doctor. He or she may give you a prescription for an antidepressant, or refer you to a psychologist. Never be afraid or ashamed to seek out help. Depression can be a very difficult condition to take on by yourself, so let the experts give you the advice and expertise to get you on your way to recovery.
